Online introduction to Berlin from Gendarmen Markt to Checkpoint Charlie Checkpoint Charlie (or "Checkpoint C") was the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War (1947–1991), as named by the Western Allies. East German leader Walter Ulbricht agitated and maneuvered to get the Soviet Union's permission to construct the Berlin Wall in 1961 to stop emigration and defection westward through the Border system, preventing escape across the city sector border from East Berlin into West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced each other at the location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited Checkpoint Charlie and looked from a platform onto the Berlin Wall and into East Berlin. After the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc and the reunification of Germany, the building at Checkpoint Charlie became a tourist attraction. It is now located in the Allied Museum in the Dahlem neighborhood of Berlin. Enjoy your viewing! SUBSCRIBE! LEAVE COMMENTS! #PetersburgerStrasse #BerlinWalk #GermanyWalking #originalberlinwalks Petersburger Strasse. The road was initially laid out from 1822 as a simple dirt road. Since its main task was to connect the northern and eastern arterial roads of Berlin, the route was given the name Communication. However, permanent development did not take place until the steady implementation of the Hobrecht Plan starting in 1862, in which the section that forms today's Petersburger Strasse appeared as Strasse No. 6 / Abt. XIII/2. The street received its name, which is still valid today, on April 23, 1874. The choice fell on the then Russian capital, since a few years earlier a continuous rail connection between Berlin and St. Petersburg had been created with the Prussian Eastern Railway. However, the terminus of this line, the Old Eastern Railway Station, is not located on the road, but southwest of it. On July 31, 1947, the street was renamed Bersarinstrasse. The street was named after Nikolai Bersarin, the first Soviet city commander of Berlin, who had died in a motorcycle accident about two years earlier. At the same time, the former Baltenplatz was given its current name, Bersarinplatz. The renaming took place on December 1, 1991, but unlike the street, Bersarinplatz retained its name. 🤍 Here is an interesting online walking tour of Berlin. Get to know and discover Berlin with us! A fascinating tour from the Gendarmenmarkt along the Jägerstraße via the Französische Straße in Berlin. The Französische Straße is a street running in a west-east direction in the Berlin district of Mitte of the district of the same name. It connects Hannah-Arendt-Straße with Werderscher Markt, which continues beyond the Spree Island as Rathausstraße. Their name goes back to the French religious refugees (Huguenots) who settled here after the Edict of Potsdam at the end of the 17th century, who among other things built the French Friedrichstadtkirche. 🤍

A fascinating online walk in the Hackescher Markt. The area where the square is located today was originally marshland. It was not until the demolition of the moat that the Berlin city commander Count Hans Christoph Friedrich von Hacke had the square laid out by order of Frederick II around 1750. It quickly became known as the Hackesche Markt (until 1872 Hackesche Markt), yet it was not officially named until July 23, 1840. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the square developed into an inner-city hub thanks to access by public transportation. Near the square was the Berlin Stock Exchange, after which the S-Bahn station on the square was named. During the Second World War, part of the buildings surrounding the square were destroyed. The square, located in East Berlin after the German division and now characterized by gaps between buildings, lost importance in the slipstream of the newly rebuilt city center at Alexanderplatz in the 1960s. After the reunification of Germany and Berlin in 1990, the existing old buildings were renovated and the gaps between buildings were closed. Most of the square area was redesigned as a pedestrian zone. Various gastronomic establishments of all kinds settled on the square and in the viaduct arches of the train station as well as along the streets leading to it, so that Hackescher Markt became the starting point of an entertainment district. Today, the square is used as a beer garden and a weekly market. Enjoy your viewing! SUBSCRIBE! LEAVE COMMENTS! Walking in Berlin from Potsdamer Platz to the Mall of Berlin. The debate around redeveloping Potsdamer Platz The challenge of rebuilding the heart of post Cold War Berlin was no trifling matter – how to transform a desolate sandy wasteland into the new German capital's city centre. At stake was nothing less than making a statement on the fundamental principles of urban design at the end of the 20th century. Many issues needed to be addressed. How to reconcile public against commercial interests, the integration of two transport systems, road and infrastructural planning affecting the new re-united centre, limiting traffic in the inner city area and incorporating ecological considerations, deciding on the style of architecture - Manhattan high-rise buildings or lower housing, traditional, futuristic or avant-garde? A first-person walking tour of downtown Berlin. Route from the S-Bahn Hackescher Markt to the Alexander Platz subway station and the Berlin TV Tower. The Berliner Fernsehturm or Fernsehturm Berlin (English: Berlin Television Tower) is a television tower in central Berlin, Germany. Located in the Marien quarter (Marienviertel), close to Alexanderplatz in the locality and district of Mitte, the tower was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the government of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It was intended to be both a symbol of Communist power and of the city. It remains a landmark today, visible throughout the central and some suburban districts of Berlin. With its height of 368 metres (including antenna) it is the tallest structure in Germany, and the third-tallest structure in the European Union. Of the four tallest structures in Europe, it is 2 m shorter than the Torreta de Guardamar, 0.5 m shorter than the Riga Radio and TV Tower, and 8 m taller than the Trbovlje Power Station in 2017. The structure is also more than 220 metres higher than the old Berlin Radio Tower in the western part of the city, which was built in the 1920s. In addition to its main function as the location of several radio and television broadcasting stations, the building – internally known as "Fernmeldeturm 32" – serves as a viewing tower with observation deck including a bar at a height of 203 metres, as well as a rotating restaurant. Also, the Berlin TV Tower can be booked as a venue for events. The distinctive city landmark has undergone a radical, symbolic transformation: After German reunification, it changed from a politically charged, national symbol of the GDR into a citywide symbol of a reunited Berlin. Due to its universal and timeless design, it has increasingly been used as a trademark and is identified worldwide with Berlin and Germany. In 1979, the Berlin TV Tower received monument status by the GDR, a status which was perpetuated after the German reunification. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the country and is often in the establishing shot of films set in Berlin, alongside monuments such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Victory Column and the Reichstag building. It is also one of the ten most popular attractions in Germany with more than 1,000,000 visitors every year.

Walking tour in Berlin from Nollendorfplatz subway station to Kurfürstenstraße subway station. The street originated at the end of the 17th century and was called Mühlenstraße, also Mühlenweg, until 1863. Since then it has been named after the electors who elected the Roman-German king. The term 'Kur', derives from the Old High German 'churi', which meant 'election'. The street section of the former Teltower Strasse between Potsdamer Strasse and Dennewitzstrasse was also given the name Kurfürstenstrasse on March 19, 1869, so that the entire street section from the Zoologischer Garten to the railroad area was so named. A small section of the street was in Charlottenburg until February 5, 1965. This section between Nürnberger Strasse and Budapester Strasse (Tiergarten) was incorporated into Budapester Strasse. This meant that the name Kurfürstenstraße no longer applied to Charlottenburg. Between 1962 and 1977, individual adjacent properties were added to Kurfürstenstraße. At the time of naming, the street already belonged to Berlin. Enjoy your viewing! SUBSCRIBE! LEAVE COMMENTS! #berlinwalk #LandsbergerAlley #berlin #walkinggermany Walking in Berlin on Landsberger Alley Landsberger Allee, Berlin. Landsberger Allee is a street in the Berlin districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Pankow, Lichtenberg and Marzahn-Hellersdorf. With eleven kilometers, it is one of the longest streets in Berlin. It is also one of the main traffic arteries of the eastern districts. The street is not named after the former Brandenburg town of Landsberg an der Warthe, as is sometimes assumed, but after the much closer small town of Altlandsberg. The name goes back to the Landsberger Straße, which used to run from Alexanderplatz to Landsberger Tor and of which it is an extension. Landsberger Allee originally ran between Landsberger Tor and Roederstraße. It was renamed Leninallee in 1950. Between 1973 and 1978, during the development of the new housing estates along the street, the streets to the east, Landsberger Chaussee, Berliner Chaussee and Chaussee nach Altlandsberg, were included in Leninallee. Since 1992, the entire street is called Landsberger Allee. 🤍 Here is an interesting online walking tour of Berlin. Get to know and discover Berlin with us! Walk around Hellersdorf in Berlin. A live tour in Berlin through the working-class neighborhood of Hellersdorf will introduce you to the life of Berliners. We will see a part of Berlin that came into being under the GDR. Hellersdorf, the district that gives it its name, was created from a large-scale prefabricated housing estate project in GDR times. In contrast, Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf and Biesdorf, which belongs to Marzahn, form the largest contiguous area of single-family houses in Berlin. The prefabricated housing estate Hellersdorf is located in the countryside, surrounded by the Hönower Weiherkette and the Wuhletal. In the center of the district is the "Helle Mitte" with stores, cafés and multiplex cinema. On the Hellersdorfer Promenade, a pedestrian zone in the midst of the prefabricated buildings, the cherry trees blossom in delicate pink in the spring. Mahlsdorf, with its historic village center, has an almost village-like flair in places. Here is also the Mahlsdorf manor house, now a Wilhelminian museum, where you can admire furniture and musical instruments from the turn of the century. Kaulsdorf is known for its lakes. The whole area is characterized by one- and two-family house development and the Barnim landscape with glacial flow channels. Hellersdorf is part of the administrative district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The old district is divided into the districts of Hellersdorf, Mahlsdorf and Kaulsdorf. Happy viewing. Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. The Gedächtniskirche or Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is the symbolic centre of West Berlin, an anti-war memorial to peace and reconciliation. Following allied bombing during WWII, the original west Tower has remained standing as a ruin and is hauntingly named the "hollow tooth" as it is literally an empty husk. Immediately recognizable and located on the Breitscheidplatz at the start of the busy shopping district which includes Tauentzienstraße and Ku'damm, this is the only building on the square which was spared by the bombing and deliberately preserved as a part ruin. Heavy war damages Built between 1891-95 in memory of Kaiser Wilhelm I, the first German Emperor (1861-1888), by Franz Schwechten in neo-romanesque style, it was damaged on December 23rd, 1943 and subsequently almost completely destroyed during the April 1945 air-raids. The Gedenkhalle (Memorial Hall) contains photographic exhibits of the Church and the surrounding area before and after the War. Other exhibits of interest are liturgical objects from bygone days and mosaics. Enjoy your viewing! SUBSCRIBE! LEAVE COMMENTS! TURMSTRASSE. Today we are taking an online walk through Moabit in Berlin. The interesting and ambiguous working-class quarter of Berlin has many surprises in store for us! The district center of Berlin's Moabit district, Turmstrasse, is to develop into a diverse and functional core of the "Moabit Island". In the process, the area is to be reclaimed as the spatial, functional and identity-forming center of Moabit. The objectives of the redevelopment result from considerable functional deficiencies, which are reflected in the progressive loss of the diverse uses and the function as a shopping, supply and residential location as well as in a loss of attractiveness of the shopping street. Significant functional deficiencies are also evident in the public realm, such as a streetscape design tailored to the needs of motorized traffic. The large green space Kleiner Tiergarten / Ottopark, which characterizes the area, showed deficits in use and design at the start of the program, as did the playgrounds, some of which were inadequately equipped. The strong socio-economic drifting apart of the northern and southern residential quarters also became increasingly problematic. The establishment of a business street management, the redesign of green areas and public space, and a reorganization of street and intersection areas are intended to overcome these problems. Friedrichshain is named after the Volkspark Friedrichshain, a vast green park at the northern border with Prenzlauer Berg. In the Nazi era, the borough was called Horst-Wessel-Stadt. #walkingberlin #berlintour #FriedrichshainBerlin #GermanyWalk Rudolfkiez . Rudolfkiez (also: Stralauer Kiez) is the name given to an area of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain in the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. It is located at the southern end of Friedrichshain. The area is bordered on all sides by wide traffic routes and is thus clearly separated from the surrounding residential areas. Towards the west it is bounded by Warschauer Strasse, towards the north and east by railroad lines and towards the south by Stralauer Allee and the River Spree. The Modersohn Bridge over the railroad tracks connects the residential area with the adjoining parts of Friedrichshain to the north. The residential area was largely developed at the beginning of the 20th century. With the settlement of the incandescent lamp factory of Deutsche Gasglühlicht AG (from 1920 Osram parent plant and later headquarters of VEB Narva Kombinat Berliner Glühlampenwerk), there was a need for housing in the area. The Koch brothers built a series of residential buildings around Rotherstrasse and Rudolfplatz around 1904. The center is Rudolfplatz with the Zwingli Church, built in 1903 by Jürgen Kröger. The ensemble around Rudolfplatz with the Zwinglikirche and a series of residential buildings built around 1904 by Sigismund Koch is a listed building, as is the complex of the Auergesellschaft industrial plant, later the Osram or Narvawerk. There are sports fields, a school farm, as well as some day-care centers and small pubs. One finds mostly old buildings, partly renovated and partly new buildings. The small quiet streets have little traffic. The western part is also called Oberbaum City. South of Stralauer Allee on the Spree is the former Osthafen. Here in the old warehouses of the light bulb factory, MTV and Universal have moved into their headquarters. Happy viewing. #WalkinginBerlin #Berlin #Walking #BerlinSightSeeingTour #Walkingtour Online guided tour of Friedrichshain in Berlin. The largely working-class district was created in 1920 when Greater Berlin was established by referendum, incorporating several surrounding settlements. Friedrichshain united the Frankfurter Vorstadt, already part of Berlin, and the villages of Boxhagen and Stralau. It took its name (meaning 'Frederick's Grove') from the Volkspark ('People's Park'), which was planned in 1840 to commemorate the centenary of Frederick the Great's coronation. Much of the district was settled in the rapid industrialization of the 19th and early 20th centuries, led by growth in manufacturing and crafts. It owed much to the opening of the railway line between Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder) in 1846 (which terminated near the site of today's Berlin Ostbahnhof), and the opening of the first waterworks in 1865 at Stralauer Tor. In 1874 the Krankenhaus im Friedrichshain was opened, Berlin's first hospital beside the university clinic Charité. In the early 1900s, the district's largest employer was the Knorr-Bremse brake factory; the Knorrpromenade, one of Friedrichshain's most attractive streets, was built to house the management. The street network of Friedrichhain was originally specified in the Hobrecht-Plan and the area was part of what came to be known architecturally as the Wilhelmine Ring. 🤍 Join us as we explore one of Germany's most historic and beautiful cities. Grünberger Straße - Berlin-Friedrichshain - Post Code: 10243, 10245 Grünberger Strasse (postcode west of Warschauer Strasse: 10243, east: 10245) is a 1080-meter-long street in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain and thus in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district. It begins on Gubener Strasse as a continuation of Wedekindstrasse and leads over Warschauer Strasse to Boxhagener Strasse on Wismarplatz. The eastern part of the street, which also leads past Boxhagener Platz, belongs to the Südkiez. The street has been named since September 13, 1905 after the Silesian town of Grünberg, which is now called Zielona Góra and belongs to the Polish Lubusz voivodeship. From April 30, 1899 to October 10, 1936, the western section of today's Grünberger Strasse between Gubener Strasse and Simon-Dach-Strasse was named Romintener Strasse. At the corner of Grünberger Strasse and Kadiner Strasse, the Lazarus Church, known as the "Cathedral of the East", stood until it was demolished in 1949. 🤍 Join us as we explore one of Germany's most historic and beautiful cities. Live Berlin Walking Tour in Moabit. The name "Moabit" probably goes back to the Huguenots who fled France and were settled here by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I. Its origin is believed to be in French ("terre de moab") and refers to the Old Testament Moabite land (when they left Egypt, the Moabite land granted refuge to the Israelites). Unlike other Berlin districts, Moabit did not emerge from a medieval settlement. At that time there was only marshland and fallow land, the northern part was forested. The Huguenots were given an area between the Spree and today's Kleiner Tiergarten, east of the Stromstrasse, where they were supposed to be breeding silkworms, but that didn't work. In the period that followed, the area around what is now Rathenower Strasse was used by the military; in the 19th century, industry settled first on the Spree: ship and railroad construction, a porcelain manufacturer, and later also a food industry. To this day there is manufacturing industry here, now mainly electronic manufacturing. From: 🤍

A walk on Berlin's Museum Island in the summer of 2021 4k 60fps. The Great Pomeranian Bridge becomes the Friedrich Bridge At the beginning of the 18th century, there were about 30 bridges over the Spree in the center of Berlin, one of which was the multi-span Große Pomeranzenbrücke, built in 1703. It was an important Spree crossing between the formerly independent cities of Kölln and Berlin. The surroundings of the Pomerantzenbrücke with the small Pomeranzenbrücke, the stock exchange and the old Friedrichsbrücke, map from 1748 The cast-iron Friedrichsbrücke in 1886 The bridge was named after the Pomeranzenhaus on the Spree Island, which did not yet have museums in the 18th century. Frederick II attached great importance to an attractive development of his residential city and commissioned, among other things, the new construction of the bridge from Georg Friedrich von Boumann. According to his designs, an arched bridge made of bricks was completed in 1769. After further reconstruction work led by Carl Ferdinand Langhans (reinforcement of the roadway with wooden planks), the bridge received its present name in 1792 in honor of the king and was occasionally also referred to as the New Frederick Bridge. The structure consisted of six vaults and a central hinged bridge section with a stand and lifting beam for unimpeded passage of sailing ships of the time. It had a cast-iron railing and was 240 Prussian feet (75 meters) long. Enjoy your viewing! SUBSCRIBE! LEAVE COMMENTS! #berlin #walkberlin #frankfurterallee #germanywalking Walking in Berlin through the Friedrichshain district The district is a typical former working-class neighborhood and was considered a classic tenement area. Today, however, only the eastern part of the district is still characterized by this building structure from the Wilhelminian period, while the westernmost part is dominated by Plattenbau structures. In between, there are areas dominated by architecture from the early days of the GDR. In the south, former port, railroad and industrial areas occupy large parts of the district. Some of the railroad facilities are in use (Ostbahnhof, Warschauer Strasse station, Ostkreuz) and are part of the important east-west railroad line through downtown Berlin (Stadtbahn). 🤍

A walk through the center of Berlin with a first-person camera. Walking through Unter den Linden in Berlin in sunny weather. Unter den Linden runs east–west from the site of the Stadtschloss royal palace (main residence of the House of Hohenzollern) at the Lustgarten park, where the demolished Palace of the Republic once stood, to Pariser Platz and Brandenburg Gate. Eastward the boulevard crosses the Spree river at Berlin Cathedral and continues as Karl-Liebknecht-Straße. The western continuation behind Brandenburg Gate is Straße des 17. Juni. Major north–south streets crossing Unter den Linden are Friedrichstraße and Wilhelmstrasse. Unter den Linden, which sits at the heart of the historic section of Berlin, developed from a bridle path laid out by Elector John George of Brandenburg in the 16th century to reach his hunting grounds in the Tiergarten. It was replaced by a boulevard of linderea around present-day Bebelplatz was integrated into the fortification of Berlin in the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War, visible until today as there are no trees. By the 19th century, as Berlin grew and expanded to the west, Unter den Linden became the most renowned and grandest street in Berlin. In 1851 the famous equestrian statue of King Frederick II of Prussia, designed by Christian Daniel Rauch, was erected on the central strip. Johann Strauss III wrote the waltz "Unter den Linden" in 1900. In the course of the building of the Nord-Süd-Tunnel for the Berlin S-Bahn in 1934–35, most of the linden trees were cut down and during the last days of World War II the remaining trees were destroyed or cut down for firewood. The present-day linden were replanted in the 1950s. Enjoy viewing! SUBSCRIBE! LEAVE COMMENTS! Walk on the OberBaum Bridge over the Spree River. Online tour of the beautiful bridge in Berlin. Visit Berlin's criminal paradise Kreuzberg. Oberbaum Bridge. The bridge is built on the former boundary of the municipal area with its rural environs, where an excise wall was built in 1732. A wooden drawbridge was built as part of the wall; it served as a gate to the city. The name Oberbaumbrücke stemmed from the heavy tree trunk, covered in metal spikes, that was used as a boom to block the river at night to prevent smuggling. (Baum means tree or wooden beam in German; thus the name means something like "Upper [Upstream] Tree Bridge"; there was another tree-trunk barrier at the western end of the contemporary city limits, close to today's Unterbaumstraße. By 1879 the wooden bridge had been modified greatly. At 154 meters it was Berlin's longest, but was no longer adequate to the amount of traffic crossing it. Plans began to be drawn up for a new stone construction. The Siemens & Halske company, which was planning to build the Berlin U-Bahn (subway), insisted on a combined crossing for road vehicles, pedestrians, and the new rail line. From: Wiki.

Protests in Berlin After Death of Iranian Woman

Hundreds gathered in Berlin on Friday to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody in Tehran. Protesters across Iran continued to clash violently with security forces early Friday following the death of a young woman in police custody, as Iranian state TV suggested the death toll from the unrest could be as high as 26, without offering details. Although the scope of the protests across some dozen Iranian cities and towns remains unclear, the movement represents the widest unrest since 2019, when rights groups said hundreds of people were killed in a violent crackdown. Iran has also disrupted internet access to the outside world, according to internet traffic monitor Netblocks, tightening restrictions on popular platforms used to organize rallies like Instagram and WhatsApp. An anchor on state TV said late Thursday that 26 protesters and policemen had been killed since the protests erupted last Saturday after the funeral of the 22-year-old Amini, without elaborating on how authorities reached that figure. He said official statistics would be released later, but in past times of turmoil the Iranian government has not offered official death tolls. The unrest has killed at least 11 people according to a tally by The Associated Press, based on statements from state-run and semiofficial media. Most recently, the deputy governor of Qazvin, Abolhasan Kabiri, said that a citizen and paramilitary officer had been killed in unrest that rocked two cities in the northwestern province. 🤍 » Subscribe to VOA News: 🤍 » Watch more VOA News video: 🤍 Voice of America (VOA) is the largest U.S. international broadcaster, providing news and information in more than 40 languages to an estimated weekly audience of 236.8 million people.
