While more Canadians are enjoying the benefits of being outdoors in the summer, there is still a warning some medical professionals are cautioning about once more: COVID-19. Canada is seeing an uptick of cases in many parts of the country, and the nation's public health agency is projecting an increase in case numbers in the coming months. The COVID-19 Immunity Task Force has also released new research that found the number of Canadians who have contracted COVID-19 is likely well above 50 per cent, with about 17 million estimated to have been infected in the past five months. Tim Sargeant reports. Canadian health experts say the sixth COVID-19 wave is just getting started, as public health restrictions disappear, and the number of hospitalizations rises. In Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, there's a rise in front-line workers becoming infected. And wastewater data from Ontario and Alberta have detected an increased presence of the virus that causes COVID-19. Jamie Mauracher reports on how the more contagious Omicron BA.2 subvariant, dubbed "stealth Omicron," is being blamed; and the questions being raised about needing a fourth vaccine dose. COVID-19: Health Canada approves Moderna’s Omicron booster

Health Canada has given the green light to Moderna’s bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, making it the first vaccine specifically targeting the Omicron variant to get approval for the Canadian market. According to the drug authorization listing, the bivalent booster will be a half-dose of the amount delivered in the primary doses of the vaccine, keeping it in line with the dose delivered in boosters so far. The Omicron booster is authorized only for Canadians over the age of 18 at this time. Health Canada’s chief medical advisor Dr. Supriya Sharma said Thursday that the vaccine has been proven, in clinical studies, to have “strong” immune response to the original coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and B.A.1 – the original Omicron subvariant. The vaccine does not specifically target the B.A.4 and B.A.5 subvariants that are now the dominant strains, but Sharma says clinical data shows a “good” response to those variants as well. Speaking to reporters and the Canadian public on Thursday afternoon in Ottawa, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said that 780,000 doses of the newly-approved bivalent COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna would be delivered to Canada on Friday, with a total of 10.5 million doses expected by the end of September. Duclos also said that "where possible," people aged 18 and older should look into getting the bivalent vaccine as a booster dose going forward, but stressed existing vaccines were still effective. Moderna’s vaccine is the first to get approval in the Canadian market that specifically targets the Omicron variant. Canada has already purchased 12 million doses of Moderna's updated shot for 2022 and 2023. The two have agreed to convert six million doses of the company’s COVID-19 vaccine, which targets the original virus, to an Omicron-containing bivalent vaccine. Canada will also purchase an additional 4.5 million doses of the Omicron-containing vaccine, and is moving forward with the scheduled delivery of 1.5 million doses of the bivalent shot from 2022 to 2023. #Canada #Omicron #coronavirus The Omicron variant has officially arrived in Canada, with several provinces reporting cases of the new variant of concern. The discovery of Omicron has also prompted the federal government to impose a series of new restrictions at the Canadian border, including a travel ban on 10 African countries and mandatory testing upon arrival for all travelers outside the U.S. On this episode of Editor's Edition, Alicja Siekierska and the Public Policy Forum's Sean Speer take a look at how the government and public health officials have responded to the emergence of the new variant of concern. Speer argues that the response to Omicron has been handled in "a sensible way" and that policymakers have "resisted the temptation to use language and messaging that could create alarm." Public health experts and officials are alarmed by the Omicron COVID-19 variant’s high number of mutations — with preliminary data showing at first an increased potential for transmissibility, a reduction in vaccine effectiveness and increased reinfection. The drugmakers behind the COVID-19 vaccines are closely watching this mutation of the virus, as they already know the Delta variant can cause breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated people. As Sarah Komadina reports, hospitalization rates will be key in understanding whether this new variant poses a problem. Ontario's chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore said Monday that the two first cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant that were reported in Ottawa were in two people who arrived and were initially tested in Montreal. He said so far no further cases have been reported in the province, but there were four COVID-19 cases under investigation. Moore also said that the province had expanded its PCR testing eligibility to people who had arrived from any of the seven southern African nations that Canada recently added new restrictions on as the Omicron variant spreads. But Moore also said officials were suggesting to the federal government to expand testing to travellers from more countries as cases of the variant of concern had been reported in places like Australia and the Netherlands. The province reported 788 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday and three more deaths, putting the death toll just three away from reaching 10,000 over the course of the pandemic. Canadian Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced on Tuesday new travel measures, being enacted today, to combat the spread of the new Omicron COVID-19 virus variant, which was first detected in South Africa. These measures include additional testing at airports and the addition of three African countries, Egypt, Malawi and Nigeria, were included on the travel ban list. This comes as the Omicron variant of concern continues to surface in more countries, with at least four cases having been reported in Ontario and one in Quebec. Last week, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced that Canada was enacting five COVID-19 travel measures involving seven countries in southern Africa, including Zimbabwe and South Africa. Under the new measures, foreign nationals who travelled through these countries would be barred from entering Canada. The B.1.1.529 variant, also known as the "Omicron" variant, was first detected in South Africa, but new data shows the emerging threat slipped into countries before their defences were even in place. It is unclear where or when the variant first emerged. Tuesday's update comes as much remains unknown about the new variant, including how contagious it might be, whether it causes severe disease and how effective current vaccines in use, are against the virus. Nationally, support for the country’s premiers has dipped five points since December, to 52 per cent. Meanwhile, Canadians’ tolerance for lockdowns has dropped even further, with just 52 per cent of those surveyed saying they support lockdowns for as long as it takes to get Omicron under control.
