After a gruelling 61 days at the wreckage, he and a teammate trekked for 10 days out of the mountains to seek help. This story became a worldwide sensation with the publication of Piers Paul Read’s best-selling chronicle "Alive," and the release of the Hollywood film of the same name. A Uruguayan television personality, amateur race-car driver, and successful businessman, Parrado leads a life that reflects the philosophy he developed as a survivor. This year he has told his own tale in the superbly readable memoir "Miracle in the Andes," and he brings this story of courage and survival to the 2006 Banff Mountain Festival. On October 13, 1972, a plane carrying a rugby team from Uruguay, along with some of their friends and family and crew, was flying from Uruguay to Chile when it crashed in the peaks of the Andes mountain ranges. The survivors had only a bottle of rum and a few snacks to sustain them. After nine days, they resorted to eating the dead to stay alive. Reporter Alex Cullen spoke to some of the survivors and visited the site of the crash. This story originally aired in 2013. On December 21, 1972, two members of a rugby team from Uruguay – who had been walking through the snow-capped Andes mountains – encountered a shepherd. They told him they had been in a plane crash and had been walking for 10 days. They had no food and were weak. There were 14 others still back on the plane. The shepherd rode on horseback for eight hours to contact police, who sent helicopters to find the crash site. It was over two months earlier, on October 13, 1972, when the chartered plane carrying the rugby team to Santiago, Chile, crashed in the Andes mountains. Initially, 33 people remained alive. For 70 days, the survivors endured temperatures of 22 degrees below zero waiting for help. It never came. Un ser humano con todas sus letras, que se dedicó a retribuir de alguna manera, el haber salvado la vida y de poder seguir ayudando a salvar vidas. "El músculo más nombre, el del corazón", así lo nombramos cariñosamente en esta entrevista. El expedicionario, el partner perfecto para Nando Parrado en su escalada y caminata hacia el rescate, hacia la libertad, hacia el regreso a casa... Con ese inmenso ser humano, nos topamos esta vez.

Switch Up caught up with Nando Parrado, one of the survivors of the ill-fated charter flight that crashed in the Andes on Friday 13th, October 1972. Enduring 72 days in the freezing wilderness, Parrado and his fellow survivors had to resort to cannibalism in order to survive. Parrado's ordeal was re-imagined in the Hollywood blockbuster Alive by director Frank Marshall back in 1993.

En octubre de 2022 se cumplen 50 años de la Tragedia de los Andes, el accidente del avión 571 de la Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya que cayó en la cordillera con 45 pasajeros.

Roberto Canessa fue uno de los 16 sobrevivientes al accidente de Los Andes ocurrido el 13 de octubre de 1972. Ese día el avión que trasladaba al equipo de rugby de Old Christians junto a algunos allegados cayó en el Valle de las Lágrimas dando lugar a una de las historias uruguayas más reconocidas a nivel mundial: el milagro de Los Andes. "Ya estábamos muertos, no había retorno, lo otro era todo deprimente y para este lado era la posibilidad de la ilusión, era tener un futuro, una esperanza, íbamos hacia algún lado, íbamos hacia algo". El 13 de octubre de 1972, un avión de la Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya se estrelló en la Cordillera de los Andes. Viajaban 45 personas, entre ellas, miembros del equipo de rugby Old Christians que viajaban a Chile a jugar un amistoso de rugby. Tras 72 días perdidos en la montaña, solo 16 personas salieron con vida. Roberto Canessa, recuerda la expedición final que realizó junto a Fernando Parrado, en la que se encontraron con el arriero Sergio Catalán y lograron salir de la montaña y enviar un equipo de rescate al resto de sus compañeros. Fernando Parrado, mas conocido como (Nando) es un de los sobrevivientes del accidente del avión serie FAU 571, más tarde conocido como la Tragedia de los Andes o el Milagro de los Andes, fue un vuelo fletado que se originó en Montevideo, Uruguay, con destino a Santiago de Chile. In 1972, 23 year old Nando Parrado, his Mother, Sister and 42 others were on board a plane to Chile. The plane crashed in the the middle of the Andes mountains. Nando's mother was killed and his sister was wounded. Nando went into a coma and awoke 4 days later. He looked after his sister until she died. Nando and the remaining surviors began to eat the dead bodies of their friends in order to survive. Nando was then burried underneath an avalanche that killed 8 people. He survived, and decided to walk out of the Andes. He and Roberto Canessa walked for 10 days across the mountains and eventually found help 2 months after the crash. They were saved, and helecopters were sent to resuce the remaining 14 survivors. Now Nando is a motivational speaker. Here, 38 years later, he talks about what happens in life after you die.
