Mulch is any biological material, such as farm waste, twigs, branches or leaves that is spread over the surface of the soil as a covering and the process of layering the soil with mulch is known as mulching. Mulching provides several benefits. It helps in the water retention in soil and reduces the amount of water that evaporates from the soil. The mulch acts as an insulating layer and protects the soil from direct sunlight and keeps it cool in summer. Mulch provides the soil with nutrients and thus improves the quality and texture of the soil. Moreover, mulch prevents the weed to grow. #mulching #benefitsofmulching Give Me Trees Trust has planted more than 20 million trees all across the country. Mulching Makes All The Difference! In our backyard gardens, just like in nature, bare and exposed soils are just no good. Walk through a forest or any natural greenscape and you'll won't see the naked dirt. Nature has designed seasonal systems and processes to eliminate exposed soils for protection and to keep the plant-soil interaction healthy and robust. Same with our gardens. You soil is your most precious resource for growing the best veggies and fruits. You and the soil have to work three times harder when an exposed top layer keeps drying out, is prone to weed colonization, and the microbial activity is lost to the depths. Let's change that today talk about everything MULCH! I'll give you my 6 key benefits of mulching your vegetable garden right now, as well when to mulch, how to mulch, and what to mulch with! Sheet mulching is a useful technique for getting rid of weeds in large areas of your garden. It’s cheap, effective and a way to kill weeds without using herbicides. Subscribe 🔔 🤍 Using newspaper or cardboard as a layer underneath mulch will smother the weeds by denying them sunlight so that they rot away. Sophie uses this method extensively throughout her garden and has fine-tuned the process. How to lay sheet mulch: 1. Use a lawnmower on its lowest setting to ‘scalp’ the weeds you want to smother, right down to the soil level. 2. Water the area well and then fertilise. Fertilising promotes new growth, but because the weeds will be denied sunlight, the new growth will simply rot away. If this part is not done properly the weeds may not die as easily, and in dryer conditions, you may need to increase the watering to promote their growth. 3. Prepare the sheet material You can use 5 layers of newspaper or non-wax cardboard to create a base. Remove plastic tape from the cardboard, as it is not only non-biodegradable, it will also stop the layers of cardboard bonding together to suppress the weeds. 4. Cover the area with sheet material Make sure the layers overlap each other properly and be mindful of any holes in the cardboard or between the layers. Weeds will take advantage of any openings they can find, and areas that are exposed will allow weeds to grow through, so cover open areas with an additional layer. 5. Lay over the mulch Cover the surface with heavy mulch, Sophie uses bark chip mulch. A thick layer of around 3cm should be enough to avoid breaks or openings forming over time; weeds will make a break for it at any opportunity. 6. Be patient Depending on the type of weed, it may take up to six months to rot away. If you become too enthusiastic about planting here before they’ve broken down, the weeds will take advantage of the planting holes and will grow right next to your new plants. Similarly, garden art or fence posts that puncture through the layers will create an escape hatch for weeds. 7. Stay on your guard Be aware of weed seeds entering the patch from other areas or creeping in via underground growth which can invade the hard lining of the sheet mulch bed. Sheet mulching is a great addition to any gardener's repertoire. To be effective it takes effort and consistency, but with a little know-how, you can turn any patch of weeds into a beautiful garden without the use of herbicides. _ Gardening Australia is an ABC TV program providing gardening know-how and inspiration. Spending money on things that make jobs go faster and strain your employees less are GOOD investments. 3)Get a full-size pitchfork to scoop your mulch. There is just no other way to efficiently scoop mulch. A scoop shovel works great for the last little bit. Mulch Tutorial: Weeding/Edging - Before Any Mulch is Laid Prune anything in need and weed beds before edging. This will keep the dirt out of our yard waste. Picking up dirt mixed in with your plant clippings is not fun and this will also cause the local yard waste dump site to not accept your debris. Collect weeds and clippings in a bag or tarp. Any border the mulch has with rocks or concrete will need to be scraped back. Any grass border needs to be edged with a shovel 3-5 inches deep. We want our edges clean, neat, and straight. Use a string trimmer to snap a line down before cutting in your edge. MAKE SURE no mulch or dirt is left in the grass before you begin laying mulch. By hand, clean out the edge of any loose debris. Blow everything back into the beds before beginning to mulch, including debris built up along parking lot edge. Break up all dirt clumps and spread them out evenly, so when you begin to mulch you don’t have to mess with them anymore. Pre-Emergent - Spread the pre-emergent by hand over any area that is to be mulched. Spreading Mulch Load up all wheel barrels at the same time. Don’t mulch yourself into a corner. We need an even coat of mulch 1.5 to 2 inches over all the beds. NO CLUMPS OF MULCH! NO MULCH IN THE GRASS. When finished mulching…tamp all edges with a hard rake. Carefully blow any mulch off the concrete back into the beds. WHEN COMPLETE. Make sure the area around the trailer is all cleaned up. If you moved the truck and trailer during the job make sure all loading areas are cleaned up. Make sure we have all of our tools and get to the next job. Break Down: 1 – Prune and clean up before doing any digging or edging. 2- Edge beds and scrap back concrete borders. Pull weeds not too. 3- Even out clumps left from edging and grade your edge into the bed. 4- Blow any dirt/mulch back into beds from all sides (e.i. parking lot too) Clean out your edge! 5- Pre-M - Make sure all beds are hit! 6- Spread mulch –DO NOT GET MULCH IN THE GRASS 7- Move truck and trailer as needed – clean each spot as you go 8 – Tamp all edges 9- Blow everything off one more time 10 – Double check work

Description-The process of covering the open surface of the ground by a layer of some external material is called mulching & the material used for covering is called as ‘Mulch.’ Mulching is usually practiced when cultivating commercially important crops, fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, nursery saplings, etc. It is beneficial in yard gardening, containers & raised beds of home gardens. Plastic mulch: A thin layer of polyethene is used to cover up the soil. Plastic mulch is widely used by commercial farmers in greenhouse floriculture, vegetables and for fruit crops like strawberry & watermelon. Organic mulch: Any decomposable organic material that can be used to cover the soil is organic mulch. Organic mulching has an added advantage of increasing humus content of soil & improving overall soil quality. Examples of organic mulch: Dry leaves, grass, paddy straw, sugarcane molasses, green manures, gunny bags, coconut leaves, peanut shells, etc. Mineral / Ornamental mulch: Mineral mulch is non-biodegradable and hence has a great lifespan. Use crushed stones, clay pellets, slate, shredded wood, colorful pebbles, gravel, sand, peat moss, etc. All this material appears as a decorative ground cover and keeps the soil warm. #Mulching #TypesOfMulching #KrishiNetwork
