In the 1990s a film crew decided that Maya Bay, on the island of Phi Phi Leh in southern Thailand, was the kind of heaven-on-earth idyll where a group of people who wanted to rebuild society from scratch might settle. The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was released in the year 2000. Based on the book by Alex Garland, it tells the story of a backpacker's search for a legendary beach untouched by tourism. Obviously things turn sour in paradise. Since then this tiny, but now iconic, strip of sand has topped bucket lists of people around the world consumed by wanderlust. These were genuinely some of my favorite 3 days of my life. Phi Phi was so much fun. I was lucky enough to see Maya Bay, and all the beautiful surrounding lagoons/islands. This is definitely something that I recommend, even though it tends to be quite overpopulated. All the other stops on the Maya Bay boat day trip are stunning as well. The place we were most excited to see after it has been closed for so long, welcome to MAYA BAY! We visited 5 years ago on our first trip to Asia together and it was a completely different place, there were boats on the beach, food and drink sellers and it really was a contrast to what we saw today! As we arrived, pretty much everyone was leaving Maya Bay to move on to their lunch spot, however we were arriving onto a very empty beach! Such a memorable moment for us both! Maya bay is OPEN! After 3.5 years of closure due to over tourism and severe damage to the ecosystem! We were lucky enough to step foot on this famous and iconic beach and it did not disappoint! Today we venture to the most beautiful island in the world!! One that is talked about and shared for decades! Phi phi island is actually an archipelago of 6 islands Maya bay, Phi Phi don and Phi Phi Leh form part of the 6 which we visit today! If you haven’t been here yet, this is something you cannot miss out on, the iconic long tail boats, limestone rock faces and of course that turquoise water! We were in awe of this magical paradise! Maya bay got its fame from featuring in the 1999 movie “The Beach” Starring Leonardo DiCaprio. For many years boats filled with eager tourists used to visit this beach - around 5000 people per day! The beach closed due to severe damage to the environment and now the beach is finally open with some conditions: Only 400 guests per day If you visit without a tour boat you need to pay 400 baht national park fee No swimming allowed You have a limited time at this island (around 1 hour) We recommend taking a private boat if you would like to send more time there! If you take a tour boat you can visit many places in one day: Phi Phi Lagoon Phi Phi Don Maya bay Monkey Beach Viking cave Kai island We paid 1800 baht per person and loves seeing so many places in one day! It is about a hidden island that is so beautiful that you can go completely crazy when you see it. We visit the famous Maya Bay from the movie, on the island of Koh Phi Phi Leh. Here we snorkel with tropical fish and a deadly sea snake! We also go to Bamboo Island and stay on the main island of Koh Phi Phi Don, with all the beautiful viewpoints. In this episode I show you all about Koh Phi Phi in a crazy adventure. We are visiting Thailand on a one year world tour and we may even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. After three and a half years of closure in order to restore the marine ecosystem, Maya Bay in Krabi is once again open to tourists. The bay falls under the supervision of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. From Jan 1, Maya Bay has started welcoming visitors from 10am to 4pm. The number of tourists is limited to 375 per round and the one-hour tour must be booked in advance. The reopening of Maya Bay comes with certain rules and regulations. Visitors are required to get off at Loh Sama (Sama Bay) at the back of the island and walk five minutes on a wooden trail to Maya Bay. They are only allowed to walk around the area and take photographs and are not allowed to enter the water. La mythique plage thaïlandaise du film La Plage avec Leonardo Di Caprio avait fermée en 2018 pour des raisons environnementales. La baie aux eaux turquoises a réouvert ce 1er janvier 2022. Maya Bay est une plage de sable blanc qui se trouve sur l’île de Phi Phi Leh en Thaïlande. Elle est entourée de falaises de 100 mètres de haut et n’est accessible qu’en bateau depuis les îles de Phuket ou de Phi Phi, ou encore depuis Krabi, sur le continent. La plage rendue célèbre par le film La Plage, sorti en 2000, avec Leonardo Di Caprio, avait fermé ses portes au public en 2018. En cause? Les récifs coraliens et la plage avaient été endommagés par le tourisme de masse dans la baie. La veille de sa fermeture, près de 5000 touristes par jour foulaient le sable de Maya Bay. Alors pendant presque quatre ans, les autorités thaïlandaises ont pris des mesures pour préserver la biodiversité et ont replanté des coraux. Une décision qui a porté ses fruits puisque “les requins sont revenus, les récifs coralliens repoussent et l’eau est à nouveau claire”, a déclaré à Reuters Yuthasak Supasorn, le gouverneur de l’Autorité du tourisme de Thaïlande. “Ces choses montrent que la nature guérit si on lui en laisse le temps, et nous devons travailler pour qu’il en soit de même. Les visiteurs ont de nouveau le droit de se promener mais la baignade est toujours interdite. Seules 375 personnes par heure sont autorisées à se rendre sur l’île d’après les autorités. MAYA BAY - MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN THE WORLD | MARCH 2022 After three and a half years of closure Maya bay, in order to restore the marine ecosystem, Maya Bay in Krabi is once again open to tourists. The Maya bay falls under the supervision of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. From Jan 1, Maya Bay has started welcoming visitors from 10am to 4pm. The number of tourists is limited to 375 per round and the one-hour tour must be booked in advance as says. The reopening of Maya Bay comes with certain rules and regulations. Visitors are required to get off at Loh Sama (Sama Bay) at the back of the island and walk five minutes on a wooden trail to Maya Bay. Antes de ir a Tailandia seguro que te han dicho un millón de veces que Maya Bay es un horror, etc, etc... te dirán que hay mucha gente, etc. Bien pues aquí os dejo un vídeo donde me he paseado cámara en mano por la playa de Leonardo Di Caprio para que veáis cómo es. Personalmente creo que la playa tiene 3 zonas. Una, muy bonita, donde están las barcas tradicionales, otra sin barcas, destinada al baño y otra que es un infierno de speedboats y cientos de personas que sin saber por qué se agolpan ahí. ¿Repetiría? Sí. El encanto del entorno es increíble. Pero ojo, jamás me quedaría en la zona de speedboats. ¡Ya sabéis! NOTA: Disculpad mi lenguaje.
