It is our pleasure to present you our MERICS Future China Lecture with Kevin Rudd. The former Australian Prime Minister and President of Asia Society discusses insights from his timely new book: “The Avoidable War - The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the US and Xi Jinping's China”. The event is taking place on Wednesday, August 31 from 16:00 to 17:30 CEST and will be live-streamed here on Youtube. Kevin Rudd has studied, lived in, and worked with China for more than forty years. As a former Australian prime minister and foreign minister, he can offer first-hand insights into the mindsets of China’s leadership. “The Avoidable War” demystifies the actions of both China and the US. The relationship between the world’s two superpowers is peculiarly volatile. It rests on a seismic fault of cultural misunderstanding, historical grievance, and ideological incompatibility. Their militaries play a dangerous game of chicken, corporations steal intellectual property, intelligence satellites peer, and AI technicians plot. The capacity for either country to cross a fatal line grows daily. A war between China and the US would be catastrophic, deadly, and destructive. Unfortunately, it is no longer unthinkable. Geopolitical disaster is still avoidable, but only if these two giants can find a way to coexist without betraying their core interests through what Rudd calls “managed strategic competition.” Should they fail, down that path lies the possibility of a war that could rewrite the future of both countries, and the world. We are delighted that Mr. Rudd is discussing his insights at MERICS!

Many foreign policy observers are wondering how China's territorial ambitions for Taiwan are being affected by Russia's experience invading Ukraine. Taiwan's independence is widely considered the most likely issue to embroil Australia in a regional war, given the US is likely to respond to Chinese aggression. The former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd is one of the world's top experts on China-US relations and he thinks the next decade is critical to preventing conflict. ANU/The Canberra Times Meet the Author series. Kevin Rudd is in conversation with Julie Bishop on his new book, The Avoidable War. The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the US and Xi Jinping's China, in which the former Prime Minister of Australia, and deeply knowledgeable China watcher, proposes a way forward for the US and China to avoid a superpower conflict. Kevin Rudd offers a chilling vision of what that might look like if it was unleashed. Kevin Rudd, who has studied, lived in, and worked with China for more than forty years, is one of the very few people who can offer real insight into the mindsets of the leadership whose judgement will determine if a war will be fought. The Avoidable War demystifies the actions of both sides, explaining and translating them for the benefit of the other. Geopolitical disaster is still avoidable, but only if these two giants can find a way to coexist without betraying their core interests through what Rudd calls "managed strategic competition". Should they fail, down that path lies the possibility of a war that could rewrite the future of both countries, and the world. This event is in association with Harry Hartog Bookshop.

In an interview with India Today, former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd warned of Chinese policies that are seeking to change the status quo. Kevin Rudd said there is no dissimilarity between China’s behaviour in Ladakh and elsewhere. Kevin Rudd said, “It is part of Chinese policy of seeking to change the status quo. The same logic applies to the Sino-India border. China is looking to change reality on the ground. The status quo in Ladakh has not been restored. China is enhancing infrastructure, airfields, roads etc in the region.” “Do not see dissimilarity between China's behaviour in Ladakh and elsewhere. Chinese strategic behaviour observes what the other side does on the ground,” the former Australian PM warned. #china #taiwan #chinataiwan Subscribe to India Today for NEW VIDEOS EVERY DAY and make sure to enable Push Notifications so you'll never miss a new video. My thanks to those MPs who backed Labor Senators’ call for a #MurdochRoyalCommission judicial inquiry in the House of Representatives today. Here’s Zoe Daniel MP’s speech calling for it. Isn’t it funny that Dutton’s Liberal Party are so worried about offending Murdoch that they wouldn't even show up to this debate? Not a single speaker, even though a royal commission would also examine all of their allegations about the ABC. Not to mention Big Tech giants. When people stand up to Murdoch, it makes his blood boil. These new Independent MPs are demonstrating major concern about Murdoch's media monopoly in traditional Liberal seats, not just among Labor and Green voters. He adds “It appears unlikely that Beijing will offer any concessions on the border question”. In a 40-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Kevin Rudd, who is presently the Global President of the Asia Society and has recently written a very well received book on China called “The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the US and Xi Jinping’s China”, says he believes Xi Jinping plans to continue as President of China till 2037. This suggests that the assertiveness and provocative nature of Beijing’s relationship with India is likely to continue till then. Mr. Rudd said: “He will not be predisposed to compromise on what he perceives to be his core interests, including the territorial integrity of the motherland”. On March 18, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd joined celebrated broadcaster and Munk School Distinguished Fellow Peter Mansbridge for a conversation about Russia, Ukraine and China's Long Game. Rudd is the President of the Asia Society and author of the forthcoming book, The Avoidable War. Event description: In early February, China and Russia issued a joint declaration that solidified their bilateral relationship, outlining their intention to advance “unprecedented” economic and security cooperation. The statement, which ran more than 5000 words in length, declared that there were “no limits” to the China-Russian relationship and signaled that China is willing to stand together with Russia against the West. Weeks later, Russia launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine. Was China aware of Putin’s intentions? Will China continue to stand with Russia? Has the world’s unified response to Russia’s attack changed China’s calculus? What does this China-Russia alliance mean for the liberal international order?
