At last, we found our ways to the Americas and the last but not the least on our list of the richest countries in the world is the United States of America, also known as the United States, the US, or America. The self-acclaimed God’s own country is mostly located in central North America sharing borders with Canada and Mexico on both sides. Why is America the world's richest nation? Is it mostly because of the government, or is it thanks to entrepreneurs and businessmen? Historian Burt Folsom of Hillsdale College explains. It’s been that way for so long over a hundred years that we take it for granted. But how did it happen? There are many answers, of course. One is that the United States values the free market over government control of the economy. But here’s a point that is seldom made: It didn’t begin that way Before the country placed its trust in the free market, it trusted the government to make important business decisions. Or to put it another way, only after the government failed repeatedly to promote economic growth and only after private enterprise succeeded where the government failed did the United States start to develop a world beating economy. Let’s look at three telling examples: In 1808 John Jacob Astor formed the American Fur Company and marketed American furs around the world. Europeans adored beaver hats for their peerless warmth and durability. Astor gave them what they wanted. Instead of leaving the fur business to capable entrepreneurs like Astor, the government decided it wanted to be in on the action. So, it subsidized its own fur company run by a self-promoting government official named Thomas McKenney. McKenney should have won the competition. After all, he had the federal government backing him. But while Astor employed hundreds of people and still made a tidy profit, McKenney’s company lost money every year. Finally, Congress in 1822, came to its senses and ended the subsidies for McKenney and his associates. A similar situation developed in the 1840’s around the telegraph. The telegraph was the first step toward the instant communication we have today. Invented by Samuel Morse, the telegraph transmitted sound – as dots and dashes representing letters of the alphabet. Morse built his first telegraph wire between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore with the help of a government grant. Morse, more of an idealist than businessman, agreed to let the government own and operate the telegraph “in the national interest.” But the government steadily lost money each month it operated the telegraph. During 1845, expenditures for the telegraph exceeded revenue by six-to-one and sometimes by ten-to-one. Seeing no value in the invention, Congress turned the money-loser over to private enterprise. In the hands of entrepreneurs, the business took off. Telegraph promoters showed the press how it could instantly report stories occurring hundreds of miles away. Bankers, stock brokers and insurance companies saw how they could instantly monitor investments near and far. And dozens of other valuable uses were soon discovered. As the quality of service improved, telegraph lines were strung across the country – from 40 miles of wire in 1846 to 23,000 miles in 1852. By the 1860s, the U.S. had a transcontinental telegraph wire. And by the end of that decade entrepreneurs had strung a telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean. Why didn’t the US government profitably use what Morse had invented? Part of the answer is that the incentives for bureaucrats differ sharply from those of entrepreneurs. When government operated the telegraph, Washington bureaucrats received no profits from the messages they sent, and the cash they lost was the taxpayers’, not their own. So government officials had no incentive to improve service, to find new customers, or to expand to more cities. For the complete script, visit 🤍

New York City rich and poor — the inequality crisis | DW Documentary

Even before COVID-19, New York was already defined by a gap between the rich and poor. Yet during the pandemic, wealth has become a determinant of survival. The pandemic hit New York in the spring, with almost 800 people dying from COVID-19 each day in April. The city has been uneasy since then. People's lives have been shaken by months of stay-at-home orders, changing public health measures, "Black Lives Matter" protests, the presidential election, and above all the economic consequences of the pandemic, including ever-widening inequality between New Yorkers. Stefanie Dodt and Christiane Meier are the creators of "New York City Rich and Poor - The Inequality Crisis." They spent more than eight months following the lives of three New York families who inhabit the different strata of New York society - the bottom, the top and the middle. The documentary links this long period of observation with intensive data research and analysis and shows why, long before COVID-19, it was clear who the disease would hit hardest. The boundaries between rich and poor are often clearly defined by neighborhoods. Where a person lives determines their risk of becoming infected with the virus, and health has become more of a luxury than ever. The pandemic is spotlighting the scale and consequences of economic inequality in America. In New York, a city of extremes, the emphasis is white hot - and reflects in brash New York style the structural problems all of America is facing as COVID-19 further amplifies inequality. - DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The rich in Germany been never been as well-off as they are today and assets have never been so unevenly distributed. But who are they? How do they live? And what do they think of their country? A journey into the discreet world of the super-rich. One percent of Germans own over a quarter of the country's assets, whilst half of the country’s citizens have no assets at all. But while the German media report on the growing poverty in the country on a daily basis, little is known about the super-rich. They keep a very low profile and can walk the streets unrecognized. "Manager Magazin” says there were around 200 billionaires living in Germany in 2018, and their numbers are increasing. The documentary "Top of the World" asks why rich Germans are so unwilling to talk about their wealth. Its author immerses himself in the discreet world of big money and meets financial advisors with 800 years of family tradition behind them and billionaires such as drugstore king Dirk Rossmann and mail-order company heir Michael Otto - as well as self-made businessmen such as Rainer Schaller. They talk about their notions of money and justice, the origins of their wealth and their fear of social envy. DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Capital gains taxes, explained. Subscribe to our channel! 🤍 The richest in America don't make money like most Americans. Most people pay income taxes from a regular job. But many in the top 1% make money off their investments, like stocks, and pay capital gains taxes. While normal income has a maximum tax rate of 37%, long-term capital gains tops out at just 20%. Changing that rate, and some loopholes that benefit the wealthiest, is seen as one way to tax the rich. LESS COMPETITION The fact is, when times are difficult - companies scale back, they fold, they conserve cash, and they play it safe - but, this opens the door for more aggressive, smaller companies to stand out and take their place. MORE OPPORTUNITY. In a way, a recession is the markets way of “Weeding out the weak," giving opportunities to newer, smaller people and businesses to develop. AFTER EVERY BEAR MARKET…COMES A BULL MARKET. As Yahoo Finance points out, “historically, the S&P 500 has fallen an average of 29% around a recession with a median drop of 24%” - but, once stocks have found their low…the average return the following year is 40%…and, within two years…the market has increased by 58%. In terms of what to do: One, Scale Back On Your Expenses. This means that you track your income, cut back on the unnecessary spending, and operate “lean” while you continue re-investing on a regular basis. It should also include a plan to outline what you would do if your income drops 20-50%, how you would make up that difference, and if you can take preventative measures - AHEAD OF TIME, to protect yourself from this happening. Two, Hold Some Cash. I’m a firm believer that, even though your money is statistically BEST OFF invested as soon as possible…there is the peace of mind of having a cash position, at all times, to take advantage of any opportunities that may come up. Three, Protect your career. This, at the end of the day, is going to be your BEST HEDGE against whatever happens…after all, your worst case scenario, financially, isn’t a market going down…it’s a market that goes down, during a time where you lose your job, and can’t afford to hold your investments long enough for them to recover. NOW is the time to IMPROVE yourself, learn new skills, double down on everything, and use that your advantage. Four, ONLY INVEST LONG TERM Generally, it’s best not to invest any money that you might need in the next 5 years…and, preferably, even longer. The best course is action - when it comes to investing - is not to do anything different, and carry on as usual. Its shown dollar cost averaging, or the practice of buying into the market at regular intervals over the long term - is the most profitable investing strategy. So, stay in the markets…and continue buying in. And Five, DIVERSIFY YOUR INVESTMENTS. If you personally can’t handle a 20% drop in prices without panicking…then, maybe, you’re invested too aggressively. For instance, if you’re completely in US tech stocks, look into adding large cap and international stocks into the mix. Or, potentially look into investing in real estate, where rents tend to be a little more stable. The more legs your portfolio has to stand on, the less likely it’ll collapse if one or two of them decline. Conspiracy theories have run wild over the past few years. Many of these theories propose a common theme that a shadowy elite is in control and the chaos of living in the 2020's is all a part of the plan. It doesn't help that wealthy individuals often isolate themselves into exclusive communities of other rich people. VICE Producer Zeke Spector spirals down the rabbit hole to understand where these conspiracy theories come from and expose what the rich are allegedly hiding. The USA is the richest, most powerful and most influential nation in the world. Even in the USA vs. Rest of the World scenario, it is most unlikely to lose a war. Its economy is bigger than the economies of the next four largest nations combined. Its military budget is more than that of the next 20 nations combined. It is also no match whether one considers technology or soft power. Its values of human rights and democracy are sought by people throughout the world. So, how it is that USA has been able to become the nation to be feared, which no other nation in the history of mankind has been capable of? In which society is it easiest to get rich? Contrary to common belief, it is not countries like the US or the UK that create the highest number of rich people per capita, but Nordic social democracies like Norway and Sweden. Counter intuitive as it may sound, high taxes, generous welfare states and strong unions makes a better environment for the people who wants to earn huge amounts of money, than free markets, low taxes, and minimal government intervention. Harald Eia is a trained sociologist who works in television with comedy and documentaries. Gap between US rich and poor growing

The gap between the rich and the poor in the US is growing, with over 40,000,000 Americans, including 16,000,000 children, struggling to obtain basic necessities. Five decades ago, the issue of poverty was a serious challenge for the US, and the then President Lyndon Johnson launched what he called a "war on poverty". By 1973 the US poverty rate was down to 11 percent. But today it has climbed up to 15 percent. Over the past decade, the incomes of the richest Americans have grown by 86 percent, while the incomes of everyone else have grown at just a little over six percent. Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane reports from Washington DC.

How rich countries are making the pandemic last longer

A program called Covax wants to distribute Covid-19 vaccines fairly. Is it working? Subscribe to our channel! 🤍 Early in the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the world’s richest countries poured money into the race for a vaccine. Billions of dollars, from programs like the US’s Operation Warp Speed, funded development that brought us multiple Covid-19 vaccines in record time. But it also determined where those vaccines would go. Before vaccine doses had even hit the market, places like the US and the UK had bought up nearly the entire supply. This turns out to be an old story. In nearly every modern global health crisis, from smallpox to malaria to H1N1, rich countries have bought up vital medical supplies, making poor countries wait sometimes decades for life-saving support. It’s effectively a system in which where you live determines whether you live or die of a preventable disease. Leaving a disease like Covid-19 to spread unchecked in some places also gives it a chance to mutate and variants of the virus are already raising alarms. So: how do we get vaccines to countries that can’t afford them? One solution underway is called Covax. It’s a program co-led by the World Health Organization; Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance; and the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Its goal is to get vaccines to lower- and middle-income countries at the same time as rich countries. So how is it supposed to do that? And will it be enough? Voluntourism is when primarily western, privileged do-gooders pay for the experience of doing charity work abroad. But according to this ex-voluntourist, the orphanage she thought she was building was actually disassembled and remade throughout the night. Not only that but children were dirtied up to make them look poorer to add to the voluntourists' experience. Children were made to sing and dance for them - and worse. We give an inside glimpse into this sham world, where people pay for the experience of charity without actually helping locals - and often even making their lives worse.
