A straight to the point explanation of grinders, wheels and safety. My 4.5 inch angle grinder may be the most useful tool in my small workshop. It can be used to cut metal if you don't have a band saw or a chop saw or to grind welds. I usually keep a second angle grinder with a wire brush installed to remove slag from stick welding or flux core welding. In this video, I show my favorite disks and wheels for metal fabrication with an angle grinder. For cutting, I use abrasive cutoff wheels and diamond cutoff wheels. #michaelpaley Easy way. How to dress old grinding wheel for cheap. Lifehack for your shop. Cheapest Simplest Useful Tool for dressing Grinding Wheel of your bench grinder. Abrasive wheels. Abrasive wheel dresser A bench grinder is a benchtop type of grinding machine used to drive abrasive wheels. A pedestal grinder is a similar or larger version of grinder that is mounted on a pedestal, which may be bolted to the floor or may sit on rubber feet. These types of grinders are commonly used to hand grind various cutting tools and perform other rough grinding. Depending on the bond and grade of the grinding wheel, it may be used for sharpening cutting tools such as tool bits, drill bits, chisels, and gouges. Alternatively, it may be used to roughly shape metal prior to welding or fitting. A wire brush wheel or buffing wheels can be interchanged with the grinding wheels in order to clean or polish workpieces. Stiff buffing wheels can also be used when deburring is the task at hand. Some buffing machines (buffers) are built on the same concept as bench grinders except for longer housings and arbors with buffing wheels instead of grinding wheels. Bench grinders are standard equipment in metal fabrication shops and machine shops, as are handheld grinders (such as angle grinders and die grinders).

Some users have asked me if it's dangerous to press the tools against the wheel while it's turning due to the wheel's canal. After lots of testing I haven't had any problems, as long as the edge of the tool is above the wheel's axis and you push gently. At any rate, it would be a good idea to install a switch so that you can reverse the lathe's motion when necessary. A Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) grinding wheel is a premium sharpening tool for high speed steel (HSS). It’s made of a material that is almost as hard as diamonds. I talk about the benefits of a CBN grinding wheel as I unpackage and install this on my bench top grinder. Beware of bargain CBN grinding wheels as they can be frustrating to try and properly balance. I bought my 80 grit 6 inch by 1 inch CBN Grinding Wheel at Lee Valley Tools, here’s a link - 🤍 What I like about using a CBN grinding wheel is that it cuts fast and doesn’t heat up the metal that can cause damage like a traditional bonded grinding wheel. A CBN grinding wheel doesn’t wear down like a bonded grinding wheel so it retains its shape. In my opinion, it’s worth the investment if you buy a quality product.
