Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes stiffness and pain in your shoulder joint from adhesion build up. These stretches & exercises should help relieve frozen should pain. Watch another frozen shoulder video: 🤍 For a frozen shoulder, signs and symptoms typically begin gradually, worsen over time and then resolve, usually within one to three years. Stretches and exercises can help speed up the recovery time. First, using a pulley to help get your motion passively, can be very helpful. Since you are able to completely relax for the stretch, you can often get more motion. The next stretches are called pendulums. For a frozen shoulder, using a small weight in your hand helps open up the shoulder joint. You can also rock front to back and side to side. It’s a great way to relax all your shoulder muscles. A scapular or shoulder squeeze will help open up your chest area, and also strengthen your upper back muscles. You can add a resistive band by doing rows. Make sure you add the squeeze at the end. One of the toughest motions is internal rotation behind your back. Using a towel to stretch, will get you much more motion. If you have a Swiss (or stability) ball, using it to roll out your arm will not only stretch out your shoulder, but it can also work the stability of your shoulder. You can also do these slides on a table or counter top. The last stretch is a shoulder flexion stretch using the ground for assistance. Get on the ground and sit on your feet in a child’s pose position. If you can’t get on the ground or your knees hurt too much to bend them, you can slide your arm on a table or countertop. You will slide your arm forward with your thumb facing upward towards the ceiling and lean your body forward until you feel a stretch. A frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition where the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint tightens, leading to a loss of shoulder motion in multiple directions. The condition can follow a traumatic or overuse shoulder injury, be related to an underlying medical condition, or develop with no underlying cause. Treatment usually involves working to increase range of motion with a physical therapist. Manipulation of the shoulder under anesthesia or arthroscopic surgery to release the capsule is occasionally needed. This 20-minute shoulder stretching & exercising routine is done in real time so it's easy to follow along. These shoulder stretches & exercises help loosen up the area & strengthen the muscles around the joint. Buy a worksheet with this routine 🤍 Start off the shoulder routine warm up to get the muscles ready. Shoulder circles, shoulder Ts, and arm circles are a great way to get the muscles loose. Shoulder flexion and scaption are a good way to start the routine to start activating the muscles, but still working up to bigger movements. Then some stretching for the muscles and joint capsule will help relax and lengthen the muscles. Upper trapezius stretch, posterior capsular stretch, and triceps stretch should help free up the shoulder joint. Next, exercising the rhomboids with scapular squeezes, and then stretching them will not only help with the shoulder, but it will also help with the upper back. Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a common condition characterized by pain and limited motions of the shoulder joint. Symptoms usually begin gradually, worsen with time and then resolve on their own, typically within a couple of years. The shoulder joint is enclosed in a layer of connective tissue, called the shoulder capsule. In frozen shoulder, this capsule is inflamed, thickens and becomes tight. This makes shoulder movements difficult and painful. Frozen shoulder develops in three stages: The "freezing" stage is characterized by increasing shoulder pain. The pain is usually felt over the outer shoulder area and sometimes on the upper arm. The “frozen” stage is marked by progressive loss of shoulder movement, while painful symptoms may actually improve. In the “thawing” stage, shoulder motions slowly improve. Patients regain most or all shoulder movements, but the process may take months or even years to complete. Frozen shoulder can be prevented by keeping the shoulder joint fully moving. Often, a shoulder starts to hurt with the onset of inflammation in the capsule. Because pain discourages movement, immobilization subsequently enables scar tissue deposits, which thicken the capsule and freeze the shoulder. Treatment aims to speed up the natural recovery phase of the disease. The focus of treatment is to control pain and restore motion. Non-surgical treatments include: - Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections - to reduce pain and inflammation. - Physical therapy, stretching exercises - to restore motion range. Surgical treatments are only recommended when conservative management has failed. These include: Manipulation under anesthesia: In this procedure, the patient is put to sleep and the shoulder is forced to move in all directions to loosen or rupture the capsule. Arthroscopic capsular release: In this procedure, the tight portion of the joint capsule is cut using small instruments inserted through keyhole incisions around the shoulder.

These shoulder pain relief stretches are great for helping to relieve general shoulder pain and shoulder tightness. The shoulder stretches are done in real time, so they are easy to follow. Buy a worksheet with these shoulder stretches: 🤍 In general when stretching the shoulders, you should hold most stretches for 30 seconds, and do them 3 times. Sometimes you might not have enough time to go through your whole routine, which can be time consuming. If you are in a hurry, still hold the shoulder stretches for 30 seconds, but do less reps. A quick warm up will help warm up and loosen the shoulder muscles to help get them going. A great way to stretch the shoulder is by stretching out the joint capsule. You can stretch the posterior capsule or a cross arm stretch, and you can stretch the inferior capsule with a triceps stretch. Also, stretching some of your rotator cuff muscles, like the subscapularis may help relieve the shoulder pain. If going into external rotation of your shoulder is painful, you can modify this stretch. Finally, a chest or pec stretch and an upper trap stretch will help the shoulder and neck areas. Same Frozen shoulder exercises to help lubricate and loosen your stiff shoulders.  Shoulders can either be moving too much or moving too little or even have shoulder fixations while having rotator cuff tears.  In turn, they need shoulder mobilization or shoulder stabilization or a combination of the two.  These exercises are for tight shoulders from conditions like arthritis in the shoulder joint, a fractured shoulder joint that healed too tightly, adhesive capsulitis, scar tissue in the shoulder joint, overly tight muscles like the subscapularis muscle and in some cases of bone spurs in the shoulder area. Here are some simple stretches to get your shoulder loosened up. They can be used if you have been diagnosed with shoulder tendonitis, bursitis, adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, or if you are recovering from a surgery. The first stretches are called pendulums. Use a chair or counter top, and lean over so your arm hangs down towards the ground. Move your body, not your arm in circles so your arm swings around like a pendulum. You can also rock front to back and side to side. Add a small weight in your hand to open up the joint space while doing these stretches. The next stretches you will need to use a table or counter top. This is an active assisted stretch, which means you are moving the arm now, but the table will support the weight. You will slide your arm forward and lean your body forward until you feel a stretch. You can also move it at an angle and circles. Finally, you can use a wall to stretch your shoulder. Again, the wall will support your arm while you move it. You can slide it upward and lean into the wall until you feel a stretch, and then you can try circles as well. It is a common condition that typically it affects women ages 40 through 60 and is described in three phases: the freezing phase, the frozen phase and the thawing phase. If you think you have frozen shoulder, the first step is to visit your doctor. An X-ray may be done to find out if the symptoms are from another condition such as arthritis or a broken bone. Treatment can include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the application of heat to the affected area. Sometimes surgery is needed to loosen up tight tissues around the shoulder. Counting down the four WORST positions to sleep in with a painful shoulder, and what you should be doing instead! Fix your sleeping position to minimize your shoulder pain and sleep better through the night. Simple tips from a physical therapist to help you get a more restful, pain-free night’s sleep and experience less shoulder pain when you wake up. The only thing worse than shoulder pain is shoulder pain that wakes you up in the middle of the night. We all know that sleep is important for healing; it’s the body’s time to recharge, recover, and repair. But when your sleep gets interrupted by the very thing it’s trying to heal… well… that’s a recipe for disaster. Most often the shoulder pain that you’re experiencing in the night or in the morning is due to your sleeping position with that shoulder. Most people unknowingly put too much pressure on it or hold it in such a position that stress is placed on already-impaired structures. If you suffer from shoulder pain that is waking you up at night or hurts so bad you can barely move it in the morning DO NOT despair! One of the best things you can do for it is to make some simple adjustments to HOW you’re sleeping to get a better night’s rest free from shoulder pain. In this video I’m sharing four simple tips to eliminate your nighttime shoulder pain. These are different fixes for your sleeping positions to decrease stress on your shoulder and help you to sleep better. I’ll present this in a “Top Four” format - we’ll countdown the four worst sleeping positions for your shoulder and I’ll give you some simple tips on what you can do instead to make for a more restful, comfortable night. WORST SLEEP POSITIONS FOR SHOULDER PAIN - AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD! 4. ON YOUR BACK WITH YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD - it’s better to bring that arm down to your side, but even then it’s still in an extended position and can put stress on the front of your shoulder. Instead lay on back and supported under your your elbow 3. ON YOUR NON-PAINFUL SIDE, INJURED SIDE UP - Grab two pillows to hold it up (2 pillows better than one). Prop one under your elbow and the other in front of your body. 2. ON YOUR PAINFUL SIDE, INJURED SIDE DOWN - Best thing to do is unload it. Grab two pillows and put one about 6 inches below the other. This creates a canal to unload the shoulder as you have one supporting your torso and the other supporting your head/neck. 1. ON YOUR STOMACH WITH YOUR ARMS UNDER YOUR HEAD Honestly the fix here is just don’t do it. If you want to fix your shoulder pain, neck pain, upper back pain, and lower back pain - you need to stop sleeping on your stomach. I hope those tips help you to sleep better with your shoulder pain. I give those to my physical therapy patients regularly and I know they can be super effective. I hope you find them helpful in alleviating your pain as well. Your shoulder is your most mobile joint in your body - make sure it stays that way with nine simple stretches you can do right at home to decrease tightness and pain in your shoulder. KEEP SCROLLING THIS DESCRIPTION FOR EXERCISE TIME STAMPS IN THIS VIDEO. As I mentioned earlier, your shoulder is your most mobile joint in the body. It is actually one of our few joints that moves in home three planes of motion (forward and backwards, side to side, and rotation). It is important to maintain mobility and range of motion in your shoulders for normal, pain-free function.  As a physical therapist, shoulder pain is a condition that I often treat in my clinic. Common conditions include impingement, arthritis, and rotator cuff tendinitis and tears to name just a few. These painful conditions can cause us to STOP using our shoulder to avoid pain. This can cause the tendons and joint capsule to actually shrink, thereby limiting our range of motion even more. This condition is known as frozen shoulder. Frozen shoulder is a difficult condition to treat. Fortunately, if you are experiencing pain or tightness in your shoulder or symptoms of a “frozen shoulder“ there is a lot that conservative care can do to help you out. The key is to stretch in a PAIN-FREE range of motion, and to do it OFTEN. And as a doctor of physical therapy these are the stretches and exercises that I recommend to my patients on a daily basis. For patients with freezing or frozen shoulder I recommend performing these exercises up to 4-5 times/day as long as they don’t hurt or increase your pain. Most patients that I work with make really good progress with these exercises; I hope the same applies for you! One caveat before we get started – whenever you perform any stretch to any area of your body, it must be in a very COMFORTABLE range. That means I do not want you to push these shoulder stretches to a painful point. You should push just until you feel a very comfortable stretch in the area, but no pain. If you have pushed to the point of pain, back off a little bit to a comfortable range of motion. If you cannot perform the stretch without pain, then I wouldn’t recommend it for you and you should stick with those that don’t cause symptoms.
