Just a short episode this week to mark the end of our Freedom Ranger's tenure here at North 44º. This was a nice group of birds. Vibrant, healthy, excellent foragers. They dressed out between 4.5-6.5 pounds at 12 weeks. This is a great alternative meatie for anyone who can't stomach the problems associated with raising Cornish Rock X.

Growth Rate of Freedom Rangers

After 9 weeks I processed 6 freedom rangers, and the hens were a little under 4lbs. and the roosters were a little under 5lbs. After 10 weeks I did some more, and the weight was about the same. And after 11 weeks I did the rest, and I did have a couple of Roosters over 5lbs and some hens over 4lbs. In the end it wasn't that much of a difference in weight from 9 weeks to 11 weeks. I could have saved money on having less feed if I would have processed them all at 9 weeks. I hope this video gives you an understanding of their growth rate.

OFF GRID with DOUG & STACY are updating you on the freedom rangers. Freedom Ranger chicks grow at a moderate rate, reaching their peak weight of 5-6 lbs in 9 to 11 weeks. These active, robust chicks are suitable for free range, foraging and pasture environments and produce tender, succulent meat with more yellow omega 3 fat and less saturated fat than fast growing breeds. Our Freedom Ranger chickens feature either red or tri-colored feathers and have yellow shanks, skin and beaks. They are an active breed and thrive when allowed to free range, scratch and dust bathe in natural sunlight. Introducing pasture-raised chickens! Here at Grateful Graze, we are always looking to improve our soil's health by integrating different species to our farm. By allowing our chickens to eat the bugs, grasses and other nutrients from the ground, it not only improves their health but our health and the environment's health too. It's amazing how well nature works when you let it work the way it was designed to.

Freedom Ranger vs. Cornish Cross: Meat Bird Comparison

20.08.2021

So what is the difference between Freedom Ranger chickens and Cornish Cross chickens? Quick summary: Freedom Rangers - Stronger Foraging Drive. These chickens will use more square footage in a tractor to forage if you give it to them. They are less dependent on grain, and can get more nutrition off the land. - Better instincts for avoiding predators. - To the untrained eye, they are hard to distinguish from a “laying hen.” - Healthier, more vibrant birds. Very active. - Take 10-14 weeks to grow out, with more size variability. - Higher dark meat to white meat ratio; they don’t carry as much weight in their breast. They also have more nutrient diversity away from grain, which will create a flavor you can’t find many places. - One of my favorite birds to raise of all time. Not many people raise this breed to sell. - Cost more to process because their feathers are harder to pluck. - No hormones, No antibiotics. Very high-quality, non-GMO feed. - Have a longer growing season because they are hardier in cold weather (Their feathers grow in like normal birds). - You can keep these birds for a long time and process at your convenience. Cornish Cross - Less of a foraging drive, but do very well on pasture. They can eat up to 20 percent of their diet off pasture. They are given new forage daily in the chicken tractor. - They grow into a larger bird in 8 weeks. Less variability in size. - Large Breast, and a carcass that customers are familiar with and like. - No hormones, No antibiotics. Very high-quality, non-GMO feed. - I do not like growing them out past 8-9 weeks, they often begin having health problems past then. - Most economical bird for the price. I can raise them in less time, less feed, and less labor. I transfer that to the customer by making it a more affordable bird that is still very healthy to eat. - Feathers don’t come in completely, which makes for easy plucking but also makes them not as hardy in colder weather. From a customer perspective, you wont get many deeply embedded “pin feathers” like some heritage breeds that are more difficult to pluck.

Which Taste Better?? Red Ranger vs Cornish Cross Chicken

Which chicken taste better? The Red Ranger or the Cornish X? Is the Red Ranger Worth it & a better chicken than the Cornish X? Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: 🤍 In this video I go over our finally conclusion, does the Red Ranger taste way better than the Cornish X & if so, is it worth the extra money to raise the red ranger chicken over the cornish cross chicken? If you missed any part of the Red Ranger Vs the Cornish Cross meat chicken series, here is the entire meat bird playlist: 🤍 The day has arrived! We are finally going to see if the red ranger is more flavorful than the cornish cross, & if it is actually worth the extra money! I decided to just do a simple roast chicken, & not fancy. No brine, not sauces, no marinades. Just a simple roast chicken, that's it. I had decided to put both chickens, side by side, in a large roasting pan, coat them in butter, salt & pepper, & sprinkle just a little thyme over the chickens. Then we stuffed the cavity with onions & fresh rosemary. Preheated the oven to 425, and once it got up to temp, placed the 2 chickens in the oven & set the timer. Typically, a 4lb chicken takes around 60 minutes, but always check the temp with a meat thermometer, . Chicken, at it's thickest portion, should be at least 165 degrees fahrenheit. The family sat down for dinner, & then the tasting began. My daughter, spoke up & said she liked the red ranger better, & that it tasted more like dark meat. My wife also said that she could tell the difference in the taste and that she liked the red ranger better as well. And the same with myself. There was definitely a difference in the taste & the red ranger did indeed taste better than the cornish x. The red ranger's flavor had a little bit more of a nutty flavor or a buttery flavor, than the cornish rock did. The red ranger also had a fatter skin, and as you can see in the video, the red ranger's skin browned up nicely & was more crispier than the cornish cross chicken. Also, my dear friend, James BEard Award winning chef, Scott Peacock, had already had one of our red rangers before we did, & he liked them a good bit more than the cornish. He loved the fatter skin of the red ranger vs the cornish x. The Cog Hill Farm final conclusion is this.....we loved the flavor of the red ranger vs the cornish cross, but the downside is the red ranger chicken is going to cost you a good bit more to raise vs the cornish x chicken. The Chicken Math! The red ranger chicks are on avg $1 per bird more, & their feed conversion ratio is higher as well. Meaning it takes more feed to put on weight on the red ranger vs the cornish cross. And they took 4 weeks longer than the cornish to get to a good size. And IMO, depending on your market area, the red ranger chicken might be too hard to make a decent profit off of, vs the cornish cross chicken. Not to say you could not make a profit swelling red ranger chickens, bc not all markets are the same, but def in our area market, the red ranger would be a hard sell. Now that being said....we are going to raise the red rangers for ourselves as our homestead meat chicken, & also raise them to any locals that may be willing to pay the extra money for them. So my very final conclusion is this, the red ranger is a great backyard chicken or homestead chicken & the cornish cross is the better farm chicken or profit chicken. I do hope this youtube video & all the videos in this red ranger vs the cornish x series was helpful & if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please let me know in the comments below. Other topics discussed: *Why let meat rest before freezing? *Are Cornish Cross fatty? *Are Cornish Cross filthy birds? *Are Cornish Cross bald with barely any feathers? *Are Cornish Cross immobile and can't walk by processing time because they are so big? The Cornish Cross and Red Ranger (also known as Freedom Ranger, Rudd Ranger, Rainbow Ranger, etc) are the two most common broiler chickens raised on farms and homesteads. We did an experiment to analyze the cost in addition to other differences between these two types of meat birds. Which one will win the battle? Help Support our Farm: 🤍

We decided to get some broilers to fill our freezer and this is the design we chose to go with for their tractor! Inspired by Joel Salatin, Josh completed this chicken tractor (with a few modifications!) in just about 4-5 hours and used some reclaimed material to cut down on the cost! 🤍fruitfulrootsfarm.com Check out our store here and take advantage of free shipping! 🤍 Instagram- fruitful_roots #texashomestead #homestead #learning #educational #fruitfulroots #diyprojects #diyhomestead #diy #budgetfriendly #chickentractor #broilers #freedomrangers #freedomrangersformeat #upcycle #joelsalatin

Processing 50 Freedom Ranger Chickens in 2 Hours

There are few things more rewarding than raising and processing your own food. Today we processed 50 chickens which will last our family about 6 months. We'll process another 50 in the fall. Our Freedom Rangers are raised on pasture and with no corn or soy, with only organic feed. We are blessed to have this healthy food and a team of family to help us raise and put it away as part of our year's supply of food. Previously we raised nearly 1,000 meat chickens each year for selling to the public. Now we raise only for our family so 100 - 200 per year feels like a walk-in- the-park in comparison to previous years! Want more ideas on how to raise your own food? Freedom Rangers vs Cornish Cross vs Cornish Roasters

Back in April we got our first batch of broiler (meat) chicks. We got 25 Freedom Rangers and 25 Cornish Roasters (a slower growing version of Cornish Crosses). These birds were expected to be ready for harvest in 11 weeks. 3 weeks after getting the first batch, we received our second batch which was 25 Cornish Cross birds. The Cornish Cross birds are a faster growing bird which are expected to mature for harvest in 8 weeks. The timing of the batches allowed for us to harvest all 75 birds at once. In this video, we compare and contrast the performance, personality, and meat yield of the three breeds. Yes this is GRAPHIC! I will be butchering chickens in this video so be prepared to see that. I've raised these little Freedom Rangers from eggs and let them grow way too long! but hey, I work full time and just let them go a bit longer than expected. It's been a journey but I have learned alot since I've never raised let alone butchered this cross breed before. I try my best to give them the best life and least stressful death I can. We move the Freedom Ranger broiler chickens out to pasture. They are about 3 1/2 weeks old and will live the rest of their lives out where nature intended. We had several learnings during this first week of keeping the chickens on pasture. Most notably, they won't move two feed to avoid rain, hypothermia and death. By the end of the week we had our process down and things are going much smoother. Check out 🤍coveychasefarm.com for more information on our farm journey.
