This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The talk is about the leadership change that is required to maximize the potential for energy efficiency within in our society. Stijn Santen holds an MSc in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Amsterdam and has worked for 18 years in Shell lately as global business manager CO2 before starting his company CO2-Net B.V. in 2005. He is the architect of the first commercially successful CO2 pipeline projects; Shell-Omya (1998) and Shell-OCAP (2005), where the latter is one the largest energy efficiency projects implemented in the Netherlands. He acted as visiting professor at the Oil & Gas University of General Electric in Firenze, Italy in 2005 and 2006 teaching energy markets, energy policies and climate change and published his vision on innovation in “Managing technology and innovation” by Routledge Publishers. From 2006 till 2009 he developed and implemented the 50 % CO2 reduction strategy for Rotterdam leading to the development of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative. From 2009 till 2011 he was partner in the European program CO2Europipe on CO2 transport networks. In 2012 he led the EU CO2 transport working group in the European Zero Emission Platform ZEP together with National Grid. Currently, he is leading a project on dialogue and decision making in the Dutch energy transition with stakeholders in energy companies, governments and research institutes for the Netherlands in the EU project R&Dialogue. Increases in energy efficiency are an often-forgotten component of our shift to clean energy and reduced carbon emissions. Higher prices triggered by the 1973 oil embargo caused America to drastically change how it used energy. The ensuing gains in efficiency had more of an impact on America’s energy consumption than all of the growth in solar, wind, geothermal, natural gas and nuclear energy combined. Parliament is updating rules on energy efficiency to ensure the EU meets its objective of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The new Energy Efficiency Directive targets energy-intensive sectors such as heavy industry and data centres. It will also encourage local authorities to lead by example and ensure public buildings like schools and hospitals are properly insulated. A recent project in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana has helped show the way.

Richard Trethewey checks out an Idea House in development and learns about energy efficiency building techniques. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: 🤍 Richard Trethewey goes to Devens, MA to visit a new house with advance building techniques. He meets builder Dan Gainsboro who says the entire heating season will only cost $1000 or less for this new house—considerably lower than what our homeowners were paying to heat their house. He shows Richard how the houses in the development are built using 2x6 walls with insulated panel sheathing for a water and air-tight shield. Walls are insulated on the inside and the window openings are wrapped with flashing tape and even the headers are insulated. They used triple glazed windows throughout. The finished Idea House is a lovely small scale home with an open floor plan. The light fixtures use LEDs and the appliances are all Energy Star rated. In the well-insulated basement, there’s no mechanical room because mini-split heat pumps are used to heat and cool the entire house. And finally, Dan shows Richard the solar panels on the south facing roof of the garage. On a sunny day, the panels generate enough electricity to power the house for a family of four. Europe is at a crossroads, and its choices in the coming years will determine the continent's energy future. Europe's energy crisis is a complex issue affecting countries in many ways. And one of the main challenges is the high cost and limited natural gas supply, which is a crucial energy source for many European countries. Gas prices in Europe have been rising steadily in recent years due to increasing demand and limited supplies from domestic sources. Many countries in Europe are dependent on imports of natural gas from Russia, which is one of the largest producers of gas in the world. This dependence on Russian gas has raised concerns about energy security and the impact of political and economic instability in Russia on the European energy market. In addition, the high cost of natural gas has significantly impacted the economies of European countries, especially those that rely heavily on gas for heating and electricity generation. This has increased pressure on governments and energy companies to find alternative energy sources and reduce dependence on gas imports. And so, many European countries have been investing in renewable energy sources and exploring new technologies to increase energy efficiency to address the energy crisis. Some countries have also been working to reduce their dependence on Russian gas. They're doing this by increasing their imports from other countries and investing in liquefied natural gas infrastructure. However, these efforts have been met with challenges, such as high costs and technical difficulties associated with developing new energy sources and infrastructure. And the continued dependence on Russian gas also remains a concern, leaving Europe vulnerable to supply disruptions and price increases. Furthermore, this increase in LNG imports has also brought new challenges. And these challenges come in the form of bottlenecks in regasification capacity. You see, regasification is converting LNG back into its gaseous form so it can be transported through pipelines and used as natural gas. And the bottlenecks in regasification capacity have several root causes. Firstly, more infrastructure is needed to handle the growing demand for LNG. Now, many of Europe's regasification terminals were built several decades ago, and they are now facing capacity constraints as the demand for LNG continues to grow. Secondly, there is a limited number of regasification terminals in key regions, creating bottlenecks as demand exceeds the available capacity. Finally, some regasification terminals face technical difficulties, such as outdated equipment and maintenance issues, which limit their ability to process LNG efficiently. And experts believe these bottlenecks in regasification capacity have several impacts on Europe's energy market. Firstly, they limit the ability of Europe to access LNG from different sources. This reduces the diversity of energy sources and increases dependence on traditional natural gas suppliers. Secondly, the bottlenecks increase the price of LNG. The reason for this is that importers must pay a premium for the limited available regasification capacity. And this makes LNG less competitive compared to other sources of natural gas, such as piped gas from Russia. Finally, the bottlenecks reduce the reliability of LNG supplies, which can lead to supply disruptions and increase the risk of blackouts and other energy-related emergencies. Now, Europe must invest in new infrastructure and modernize existing facilities to address the bottlenecks in regasification capacity. More Details In The Video
