Dragon fish, or Asian arowana, are some of the most expensive pet fish in the world. It often sells for tens of thousands of dollars, and one was rumored to have sold for $300,000 in 2009. The fish is highly coveted for the red and gold colors, and new color variations that it has been bred for. Emily Voigt, author of The Dragon Behind The Glass, talks about the peculiarities of the arowana trade. #DragonFish #BusinessInsider #SoExpensive Following is a transcript of the video: Narrator: What would you rather have, a new car, or this fish? Turns out they cost around the same. A single dragon fish can go for tens of thousands of dollars. So, what's so special about it? Well, it might not look it, but this endangered fish is so coveted, people have actually gone to prison over it.The dragon fish gets its nickname for how it resembles a dragon in flight as it swims. However, its real name is the Asian arowana. It's a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, and it has taken the aquarium market by storm. Today, these fish are so prized that some have their own motorcades, and breeders protect their stock with layers of concrete walls, complete with guard dogs and watchmen. There's even a market for cosmetic surgery to help subpar fish who need eye lifts or chin tucks. And that may sound like overkill, but it's really not. Emily Voigt: It's a very valuable commodity, and that had driven a tremendous amount of crime around the areas where it's bred. Narrator: That's Emily Voigt, who explores this world for her book, "The Dragon Behind the Glass." We're talking murder and midnight fish-napping. This wasn't always the case, however.Up until the second half of the 20th century, these fish weren't flaunted. They were fileted and eaten by locals. Then, in 1967, an aquarium trader traveling through northern Malaysia saw a dead arowana at a food market and found it so attractive that he sought one out to keep as a pet. By the 1980s, arowanas had turned up in Taiwan, and eventually people all over Asia wanted one. In particular, the red and gold varieties of arowana came to symbolize luck and wealth in several Asian cultures. Voigt: All that has led to a whole mythology about the fish. It's supposed to bring good luck and prosperity, even to jump out of its tank to save its owner. Narrator: Nowadays, breeding for new color combinations is all the rage. Like this fish, called the chili red, which you can get for around $1,400 each. Or the emerald violet fusion super red, which goes for about $12,000 each. But no fish is more rare and valuable than the albino. In 2009, one of these supposedly set a record, selling for $300,000 to an anonymous high ranking official in the Chinese government. In fact, most people who buy dragon fish are middle-class Chinese men, who'll collect the fish as a status symbol. Voigt: So keeping this fish is very much a macho hobby. There's not a lot of women that do it. And it's almost like collecting cars or something like that. Narrator: So in the mid-90s, when dragon fish were successfully bred in captivity on certified farms, it was a big deal, because they were becoming rare in the wild due to overfishing and harvesting for the pet trade. Since then, more demand has led to breeding operations all over Southeast Asia. And while it's perfectly legal to buy a dragon fish in the area, it may not be in other non-Asian countries. In the US, for example, you can only find the Asian arowana on the black market. And in fact, you can't bring it into the country legally, because it's banned by the US Endangered Species Act. People have actually gone to prison for trafficking this fish. So if you have an itch to have a dragon-like pet, maybe you should stick to something safer, like bearded dragons. This is how we filmed the deep sea dragonfish, or dragon fish, sometimes called the viperfish, shown in other videos on this channel. Many people have asked how it was done because such creatures of the deep are usually only seen pickled in museum collections. It was trawled from the deep off San Clemente California in 2005 as part of a research trip by marine biologists organised by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Florida and with the 'New Horizon' research vessel belonging to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. 10 Creepy Sea Creatures You Didn't Know Existed Some of the most terrifying and fascinating creatures live underwater. In the pitch-black depths of the ocean where the pressure can be dozens of times higher than at sea level, you may very well find yourself running into scary sea animals you might have never even heard of before. People who are obsessed with zombies and aliens don’t know what creepy and scary creatures are way down the same water we swim and surf in sometimes. Scientists are still actively discovering what lies beneath the world's oceans. The deepest point is in the Pacific Ocean in the Mariana Trench, a section of earth that spans more than 1,500 miles. Scientists have yet to garner more information about the animals living in that section of the ocean floor. The ones they have already found are some of the scariest creatures on this planet. Here is a list of 10 creepy sea creatures you didn’t know existed. Wait till you get to the top 3. But before we get into that, don’t forget to hit the subscribe button. Number 10.) The Hagfish At the bottom of the ocean, a bizarre-looking fish known as Hagfish is found. It is said to be so ancient that it hasn’t changed for around 300 million years. It is found near the ocean floor, in the deepest parts. Its body is made up of velvet smooth skin with no scales and it has a skull with no spine. Its wrinkled skin might look disgusting to you but the weirdest feature of the hagfish is its mouth, which looks like it is out of some alien movie. Its jawless mouth is made for mincing up dead bodies of fish lying on the ocean floor. Several teeth are packed on two boney plates which are enough to rip the flesh off the dead fish and is shoved down its throat full of teeth. And it you think that wasn’t enough, the hagfish has one nostril with which it picks up the sweet scent of death. Number 9.) deepsea dragon It is Also known as the black deepsea dragon. Deep down in the Atlantic Ocean, at depths of up to 2 kilometers, lurks this ferocious predator. the Dragonfish actually starts its life at the surface of the ocean as a result of its egg being buoyant. The conditions down here are extreme, there's no light, no plant life, and the environment is entirely still because it is unaffected by storms or ocean currents. To deal with this, the dragonfish uses light- producing organs called photophores to lure prey into its fang-toothed jaws. The black dragon fish is so toothy that even its tongue has razor-sharp teeth. An odd characteristic of this species is the absence of some vertebras in its spine. This enables the dragonfish to have greater flexibility of its head, allowing them to feast on larger prey. The scientific name of this creature is Grammatostomias flagellibarba. If you think it can’t get creepier than this, then you are In for a surprise. Number 8). The Sea Pig If you are told you imagine a sea pig, you would probably think that it’s called a sea so it must be cute, cuddly and adorable but in reality, it is the complete opposite of that. The near- transparent exterior of this creature is extra-terrestrial as looks something straight out of Aliens vs Predators movie, and for all we know, it might as well be. The various appendages and tentacles are scary to look at. But as terrifying as it looks if you find this while diving deep down the ocean, don’t be afraid as the sea pig is completely harmless as it feeds on the dead animals along the ocean floor. In some areas, they comprise more than 95% of the total weight of animals on the deep-sea floor. The Sea pig eats sea mud so it is a herbivore. The Sea pig lives 300,000 feet underwater. Number 7.) white ghost fish This ghost-like creature is so rare in the world that it was spotted very recently by scientists in July 2016 during a mission aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Okeanos Explorer research ship. It marked the first time that this "ghost fish," part of the family Aphyonidae, was seen alive and swimming. The fish was seen swimming along a ridge, at a depth of 8,202 feet roughly 2,500 meters, at the Mariana Trench National Monument. The "ghost fish" has translucent, scale-less skin and strange-looking, colorless eyes. It is actually an eel-like creature and is almost 4 inches long. Black ghost fish are common but this fish is one of it’s kind and not much is know about it. It has a weirdly fascinating shape that actually looks confusing and creepy yet beautiful. Number 6.) Gulper Eel Covered in black, velvety skin is this eel-like monster, which resides in the darkness of the ocean 3,000 meters below the surface. This fish is rarely seen by humans but it has been reported that it often gets stuck in fishnets. As their name indicates, Gulper Eels have massive mouths which are also the most notable feature. It can be opened wide enough to swallow a fish much larger than itself.

The Dragonfish, Viperfish or Loosejaw is an amazing deep sea fish with a sneaky light trick that it uses to outwit its prey. Find out more in this video podcast as Fergus Keeling talks to Blue Planet producer , John Ruthven, curator of the Indoona channel in this startling video podcast or 'Vidpod'.
The deep sea dragonfish or viper fish is an awesome looking creature from the middle depths of the ocean (this one comes from 600 metres or about 2000 feet deep). Also called the scaleless dragonfish, they are ferocious predators, with extremely large teeth compared to their body size. And they have one of nature's most amazing tricks to give them the edge over their prey (more below). There are several different species of dragonfish (one estimate is 67 species - all from the fish family known as Family Stomidae) and they are quite difficult to tell apart but this one is from the pacific depths of California and is likely Tactostoma macropus, the longfin dragonfish. Idiacanthus antrostomus is an Atlantic species that looks very similar - at least I think that's the case correct me if I'm wrong. Could be Idiacanthus antrostomus, the Pacific black dragonfish also. Females are much longer than the males which do not feed but just have sex and die! They hunt with a bioluminescent barbel or lure. It is not glowing here but under the different lighting regimes I used - some of the darker images - you can see how much the lure stands out. Sadly fish like this do not survive long on the surface, mainly because of temperature differences and mechanical damage in the net rather than pressure problems I think. It was caught in a cod-end trawl and filmed in a special tank (a kreisal aquarium). But is great to be able to share another wonder of the oceans on YouTube. And their amazing trick? Unlike most other deep sea creatures which are sensitive to blue light - the dragonfish also produces a red light beam (see the organ to the rear of the eye) - it is also very sensitive to red light. Although red light does not travel very far underwater it allows them to see when other animals cannot and to sneak up on their prey - especially shrimps that glow in the red light. For more detail see: 🤍 and the work of Ron Douglas and Julian Partridge, 🤍 ( these images were filmed with the help of Julian and Ron). Oh and this female dragon is not big - about 60 cm or just under two feet! If you're fascinated by this deep sea marvel you can get a great pack of deep sea model creatures, including a dragonfish here - 🤍 They are not big but some of the most accurate I have seen. This affiliate link will make a small donation to Indoona and help film more amazing sea creatures too, so we can explore the oceans together. During a recent expedition aboard our research vessel Western Flyer, MBARI’s science team encountered a beautifully bronze deep-sea dragon. Meet the highfin dragonfish, Bathophilus flemingi. They captured the sighting in stunning ultra high-definititon 4K video! Dragonfishes are cunning predators in the ocean’s depths. Although they are strong swimmers, they are sit-and-wait predators. They hang motionless in the midwater, lying in wait for small crustaceans and fishes. When a tasty morsel comes close, those big jaws open wide and sharp teeth snap shut. MBARI researchers have observed a few different dragonfishes in the depths of Monterey Bay, but this one is the rarest we’ve encountered. In more than three decades of deep-sea research and more than 27,600 hours of video, we’ve only seen this particular species four times! We spotted this individual just outside of Monterey Bay at a depth of about 300 meters (980 feet). Bathophilus flemingi can be up to 16.5 centimeters (6.5 inches) long. Its fins have long, thin rays. Scientists suspect those wing-like filaments may sense vibrations in the water, alerting the fish when predators or prey is approaching. They likely provide stability too and keep the fish from sinking while it lies in wait for food. These dragons don’t have scales—they have smooth, dark skin. Research by MBARI and our collaborators has revealed the pigments in the skin of some deep-sea dragonfishes are some of the blackest blacks found in nature, all the better to camouflage in the ocean’s midnight zone. Polypterus senegalus, the Senegal bichir, gray bichir or Cuvier's bichir, and sometimes called the "dinosaur eel" (a misnomer, as the creature is neither an eel nor a dinosaur) also called "dinosaur bichir" or "dragon fish" is in the pet trade due to its lungfish-like appearance which was described as more primitive and prehistoric than other modern fishes. It is a prototypical species of fish in the genus Polypterus, meaning most of its features are held across the genus. Commonly kept in captivity by hobbyists. They are native from Africa where they are the most widespread species of the genus.

The highly sought-after Malaysian golden arowana fish has disappeared from the wild. Yet today in Malaysia, buying and selling of the arowana, also known as the ornamental dragon fish, has become a multi-million dollar industry. Over a decade ago, filmmaker Chew Han Tah learned of the dwindling number of wild arowana, and an obsession was born, much to the chagrin of his wife. Chew is exploring the potentially lucrative business of breeding arowana and is in the midst of moving his family to a new home so that he can upgrade his aquarium for his $30,000 worth of fish. In this very personal journey into the heart of Malaysia's flourishing fish business, we see what motivates collectors and investors, and what fuels Chew's dreams. Glaucus atlanticus, also known as sea slug, blue swallow, blue sea slug is a creature that looks like a sea dragon. For copyright matters, contact us directly at: officialzonea🤍gmail.com Subscribe ► 🤍 Share on Facebook ► shorturl.at/lCX28 Tweet this ► shorturl.at/nuDG9 Also known as the blue dragon, this small slug goes by many other names including sea swallow, blue angel, blue glaucus, and blue sea slug. These sea slugs are pelagic: they float upside down by using the surface tension of the water to stay up, where they are carried along by the winds and ocean currents. Glaucus atlanticus makes use of countershading: where the blue side of their body faces upwards, blending in with the blue of the water, while the silver side faces downwards, blending in with the sunlight reflecting on the ocean's surface when viewed upwards underwater. Growing up to 3cm (1.2 in) in length, this slug occurs throughout the world's oceans, in temperate and tropical waters. Even though they live on the open ocean, they sometimes accidentally wash up onto the shore, and therefore they may be found on beaches.
