-Allot 5-7 hours of time for the gathering, processing, and burning of the charcoal, and let it sit overnight to make sure it has been properly starved of oxygen and cooled enough to handle, classify, and store. -Wrist size is the absolute maximum size you can run in the drum, and you have to follow the directions exactly to the letter for that to carburize correctly. 2” (50mm) is the most common size I like to throw in mine for good results in both burning and classify-ing later. -You can burn all hard wood, all soft wood, or hard and softwoods at the same time, although you will have slightly more loss from the softwood in a mixed batch. -It does not have to be sticks! You can use pallet wood or scrap lumber, so long as it’s dimensions do not exceed 2.5” (65mm) in thickness. If you choose to burn pallet wood, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES cut up or burn pallets that are red or blue, these are treated with chemicals that will result in nothing but a bad day for you. ONLY USE PALLETS MARKED “HT” or “heat treated”

The sustainable energy.
I made a batch of charcoal using the mound method then stored it in baskets for later use. Charcoal is a fuel that burns hotter than the wood it's made from. This is because the initial energy consuming steps of combustion have taken place while making the charcoal driving off the volatile components of the wood (such as water and sap). The result is a nearly pure carbon fuel that burns hotter than wood without smoke and with less flame. Charcoal was primarily a metallurgical fuel in ancient times but was sometimes used for cooking too. To make the charcoal the wood was broken up and stacked in to a mound with the largest pieces in the center and smaller sticks and leaves on the out side. The mound was coated in mud and a hole was left in the top while 8 smaller air holes were made around the base of the mound. A fire was kindled in the top of the mound using hot coals from the fire and the burning process began (the hot coals are being poured in the top using a small pot at 2:38). The fire burned down the inside of the mound against the updraft. I reason that this is a better way to make charcoal as the rising flames have used up the oxygen and prevent the charcoal already made above them from burning while driving out even more volatiles . I watched the air holes at the base of the mound and when the fire had burned right up to each opening I plugged them with mud. Once all 8 holes had be sealed the hole in the top of the mound was sealed with mud and the mound left to cool. From lighting the mound to closing up the holes the whole process took about 4 hours. The next day when the mound was cool to the touch (this can take about 2 days sometimes) I opened the mound. The resulting charcoal was good quality. Some wood near the air entries had burned to ash though these were only small twigs and leaves. This is the reason small brush is put on the out side of the mound, to be burned preferentially to the larger wood on the inside thus protecting the large pieces of charcoal. The charcoal that was made was hard and shiny. When broken open it had the ray structure of the wood preserved. When moving the hand through it the charcoal sounded tinny, like coral on a beach being moved by waves. These are signs of good quality. Bad charcoal is soft, breaks easily and has a muffled sound. I intend to use the charcoal to produce hotter fires than I'm able to with wood alone. From my research, a natural draft furnace using wood (a kiln) can reach a maximum of 1400 c degrees whereas a natural draft furnace using charcoal can reach 1600 c degrees. Achieving high temperatures is necessary for changing material to obtain better technology (e.g. smelting ore into metal). Wordpress: 🤍 Patreon page: 🤍 I have no face book page. Beware of fake pages.

Every semester I teach my students how to make charcoal. It is fun, easy and it is a great excuse for a BBQ! This is a great project for any art program that has limited funds for materials. In one burn we produce enough charcoal for 8 sections of drawing for an entire year! Special thanks to the students of Seminole State College FL Drawing 2 class. When I added this to YouTube, there was nothing on charcoal making for drawing, now there are several......I started a trend :)

Let's make some charcoal for some biochar! this is a PURE form of carbon, that we are going to inoculate with beneficial microbes and bacteria to breathe biochar.
Step by step instructions on how to make a small batch of hardwood charcoal in your backyard in a single afternoon! Detailed description of the equipment and the entire process. Perfect for the BBQ or the blacksmith forge. So easy, even a beginner can do it! All you need is a 45 gallon oil drum to use as your burn barrel, an old propane tank, plus a few cheap bits from any hardware store. I'll use white oak firewood, which has been really successful for me. This is well within the abilities of most DIY'ers.
This is the method I use to make charcoal for grilling. Super easy and cost effective! You can use just about any hard wood to make lump coal, but my personal favourite is alder. I simply cut it into chunks and let it age until I’m ready to use it. To get started you’ll need a large drum and a smaller drum that fits inside. Punch some holes in the top of the smaller barrel for the heat to pass through because, as you’ll be seeing soon, it gets so hot, blue flames shoot from the top. You’ll also need to cut some vents into your large barrel. These will help with breathability, as well as with starting your fire. You’ll need a safe place to set your barrels because they do get really hot. From here, load up the small drum with the hard wood and then tip both drums onto their sides. Slide the small drum inside the big one and then stand them both upright. Slide the inner drum so that it’s centred, and then use your regular firewood to fill the space between the two drums. Use the vents to get the fire started and monitor it to ensure the fire burns evenly. The amount of time it takes depends on how much wood you’re burning, but I find three to four hours does the trick. After this, you’re all done! Flip them both back on their sides and then carefully pull the small drum out. The result is perfectly blackened coals ready for cooking! Enjoy!

After further inspection I realized that the hole that was made in the ammo can likely let oxygen into the ammo box, this was due to the insane heat of the fire and probably a really cheap ammo box, while some of the wood was charred, much was also burnt. Well I guess I will have to try to 55 gallon drum method...
