The Hedonistic Imperative - David Pearce

Filmed at the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne Australia 🤍 - The Hedonistic Imperative outlines how genetic engineering and nanotechnology will abolish suffering in all sentient life. The abolitionist project is hugely ambitious but technically feasible. It is also instrumentally rational and morally urgent. The metabolic pathways of pain and malaise evolved because they served the fitness of our genes in the ancestral environment. They will be replaced by a different sort of neural architecture - a motivational system based on heritable gradients of bliss. States of sublime well-being are destined to become the genetically pre-programmed norm of mental health. It is predicted that the world's last unpleasant experience will be a precisely dateable event. Two hundred years ago, powerful synthetic pain-killers and surgical anesthetics were unknown. The notion that physical pain could be banished from most people's lives would have seemed absurd. Today most of us in the technically advanced nations take its routine absence for granted. The prospect that what we describe as psychological pain, too, could ever be banished is equally counter-intuitive. The feasibility of its abolition turns its deliberate retention into an issue of social policy and ethical choice. David Pearce - The End of Suffering: Genome Reform and the Future of Sentience

08.05.2022

Synopsis: No sentient being in the evolutionary history of life has enjoyed good health as defined by the World Health Organization. The founding constitution of the World Health Organization commits the international community to a daringly ambitious conception of health: “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing”. Health as so conceived is inconsistent with evolution via natural selection. Lifelong good health is inconsistent with a Darwinian genome. Indeed, the vision of the World Health Organization evokes the World Transhumanist Association. Transhumanists aspire to a civilization of superhappiness, superlongevity and superintelligence; but even an architecture of mind based on information-sensitive gradients of bliss cannot yield complete well-being. Post-Darwinian life will be sublime, but “complete” well-being is posthuman – more akin to Buddhist nirvana. So the aim of this talk is twofold. First, I shall explore the therapeutic interventions needed to underwrite the WHO conception of good health for everyone – or rather, a recognisable approximation of lifelong good health. What genes, allelic combinations and metabolic pathways must be targeted to deliver a biohappiness revolution: life based entirely on gradients of well-being? How can we devise a more civilized signalling system for human and nonhuman animal life than gradients of mental and physical pain? Secondly, how can genome reformists shift the Overton window of political discourse in favour of hedonic uplift? How can prospective parents worldwide – and the World Health Organization – be encouraged to embrace genome reform? For only germline engineering can fix the problem of suffering and create a happy biosphere for all sentient beings. A talk by David Pearce for the Stepping into the Future conference 2022. 🤍 A big thanks to Adam James Davies for doing the chapters! 0:00 Introduction/beginning 0:07 The Biohappiness Revolution 1:53 Paradise Engineering: when? Transhumanist David Pearce explores the practicality of engineering happiness. Watch more from David Pearce at 🤍 Most of us think of suffering as a necessary feature of life. But what if that's just a lie we tell ourselves because we can't imagine the alternative? David Pearce explores the practical possibilities of biomedically engineering a world of intelligent bliss. #bioethics #transhumanism #transhumanist David Pearce is an eminent figure within the transhumanist movement, and co-founder of Humanity+, an international organisation which advocates for the technological enhancement of the human species. He envisions a future completely free of suffering for both humans and non-human animals, a pain-free paradise in which all thought, feeling, and experience is sublimated into what he calls "gradients of bliss". Was Friedrich Nietzsche a Transhumanist? A critique of Nietzsche by David Pearce

Bioconservatives often quote a line from Nietzsche: "That which does not crush me makes me stronger." But alas pain often does crush people: physically, emotionally, morally. Chronic, uncontrolled pain tends to make the victim tired, depressed and weaker. True, some people are relatively resistant to physical distress. For example, high testosterone function may make someone "tougher", more "manly", more resilient, and more able to deal with physically painful stimuli. But such strength doesn't necessarily make the subject more empathetic or a better person. Indeed, if I may quote W. Somerset Maugham, "It is not true that suffering ennobles the character; happiness does that sometimes, but suffering, for the most part, makes men petty and vindictive." Article at SciFuture: 🤍 "To those human beings who are of any concern to me I wish suffering, desolation, sickness, ill-treatment, indignities - I wish that they should not remain unfamiliar with profound self-contempt, the torture of self-mistrust, the wretchedness of the vanquished: I have no pity for them, because I wish them the only thing that can prove today whether one is worth anything or not - that one endures." (The Will to Power, p 481) "You want, if possible - and there is no more insane "if possible" - to abolish suffering. And we? It really seems that we would rather have it higher and worse than ever. Well-being as you understand it - that is no goal, that seems to us an end, a state that soon makes man ridiculous and contemptible - that makes his destruction desirable. The discipline of suffering, of great suffering - do you not know that only this discipline has created all enhancements of man so far?" (Beyond Good and Evil, p 225 ) "I do not point to the evil and pain of existence with the finger of reproach, but rather entertain the hope that life may one day become more evil and more full of suffering than it has ever been." Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) Of course, suffering doesn't always enfeeble and embitter. By analogy, someone who is emotionally depressed may feel that despair is the only appropriate response to the horrors of the world. But the solution to the horrors of the world is not for us all to become depressed. Rather it's to tackle the biology of depression. Likewise, the solution to the horrors of physical pain is not to flagellate ourselves in sympathy with the afflicted. Instead it's to tackle the biological roots of suffering. 🤍 🤍 #Nietzsche #Transhumanism #Philosophy #DavidPearce Subscribe to this Channel: 🤍 Science, Technology & the Future: 🤍

A Non-Trivial Pursuit of Happiness - Paradise Engineering with David Pearce

A Non-trivial Pursuit of Happiness - Paradise Engineering with David Pearce :-) - Full article: 🤍 It is non-trivial for a couple of reasons: a) the pursuit of this vision of happiness is not trivial - it is likely to be a very challenging endeavor (though totally worthy of the effort) b) the aim is to achieve non-trivial modes of happiness, kinds of information-sensitive gradients of bliss (as opposed to being stuck in a narrow-local maximum of ecstatic stupor) Imagine that the best experience possible - and imagine that it would be lower than tomorrows floor. It may be that our decedents will have the chance to re-engineer themselves to be able to experience well-being far beyond what we can experience and imagine today. Full blown paradise engineering is likely not something that people alive now should expect, though if we are ethically serious, we should be investigating ways to redesign our default mode of being to flourish in states of bliss. #paradise #engineering Autosomal genetic therapy 🤍 - The Hedonistic Imperative outlines how genetic engineering and nanotechnology will abolish suffering in all sentient life. Subscribe to this Channel: 🤍 Science, Technology & the Future: 🤍 Humanity+: 🤍

Transhumanist David Pearce discusses consciousness

In this episode I continue my investigation into consciousness interviewing an advocate for artificial intelligence. He advocates for a form of physicalistic idealism that is both highly speculative and incredible, by his own words.  He supports the equations of physics as a complete description of reality, and posits that minds arise in quantum superpositions of neurons.  A quantum superposition is a non-intuitive situation that arises in the equations of physics where a system can seemingly exist in two different physical states at the same time as long as it is isolated from observation. This was highlighted in the famous Schrodinger’s Cat thought experiment where the cat was in a superposition of being both alive and dead as long as the box it was in was not opened. David Pearce is author of the Hedonistic Imperative (1995), which advocates the use of biotechnology to abolish suffering throughout the living world. In 1998, he co-founded the World Transhumanist Association (H+) with Nick Bostrom. Transhumanists believe in the use of technology to overcome our biological limitations. One of the three men charged in the deaths of two women, who police say were given drugs and dropped off outside of separate Los Angeles hospitals, is now being charged in separate cases with four counts of rape. David Pearce, 37, was arrested last week on suspicion of manslaughter. Two other men, 47-year-old Michael Ansbach and 42-year-old Brandt Osborn, were both charged with accessory to manslaughter, but have since been released, according to booking records. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the victims - Christy Giles and Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola - were given drugs at a home in the 8600 block of Olympic Boulevard. Investigators believe an overdose resulted in their deaths. Giles, a 24-year-old model and aspiring actress who moved to L.A. from Alabama, was dropped off at Southern California Hospital Nov. 13. 🔴 MAKE SURE TO SUBSCRIBE! 🔴 Help Keep The Channel Going You Can Show Support By Donating at: 🤍 DONATION TO REACH MY GOAL AND BUY A NEW CAMERA 😊 🤍 Donation for a cup of coffee or two always welcomed at: VENMO: 🤍TalentedMrPhunk And here to: 🤍 Please check it out and dont forget to subscribe to our youtube channel! Does pain=suffering? Did suffering exist before complex muti-cellular life? Suffering on earth probably did not exist before the Cambrian Explosion or whenever we date the origin of multi-cellular life.. Single celled organisms may have felt pain as rudimentary experience, though this is distinct from unitary subjective experience of suffering. He approaches ethical issues from a lexical negative utilitarian perspective. Pearce maintains a series of websites devoted to transhumanist topics and what he calls the "hedonistic imperative", a moral obligation to work towards the abolition of suffering in all sentient life. His self-published internet manifesto, The Hedonistic Imperative (1995), outlines how pharmacology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and neurosurgery could converge to eliminate all forms of unpleasant experience from human and non-human life, replacing suffering with "gradients of bliss". Pearce calls this the "abolitionist project". In this episode, we talk about transhumanism, the hedonistic imperative, and the abolitionist project. We first get into concepts like negative utilitarianism, hedonism, and gradients of bliss. We discuss the goals of the abolitionist project, and the living beings it would target. We talk about the different technological approaches to abolishing suffering, like pharmacology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, neurosurgery, becoming cyborgs, Nozick’s experience machine, and immortality. We discuss to what extent these technologies are sufficiently well-developed, or if we would need to wait more time. We discuss why social, economic, and political reforms are not enough. We tackle questions regarding how our human experience would change. We discuss how we should deal with people who would prefer to opt out of the abolitionist project. Finally, we ask if we have less suffering in the world nowadays. Yet two breakthroughs in the last couple of years call this into question. Using only skin cells as their starting point researchers in Japan in 2017 have grown egg cells in the lab. While in the Netherlands scientists claim they are within a decade of creating an artificial womb. Does this technology make babies in the lab a credible outcome and motherhood and birth potentially unnecessary? Will it lead to a dystopian future and a profound threat to family life and society as whole? Or should we welcome the technique as a means to enable infertile couples and gay men to have children and women to avoid the risks of pregnancy? What is Transhumanism? - The 3 Supers with David Pearce

Three dominant areas of Transhumanism: super longevity, super intelligence and super well-being. Transhumanism (abbreviated as H+ or h+) is an international cultural and intellectual movement with an eventual goal of fundamentally transforming the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities. Transhumanist thinkers study the potential benefits and dangers of emerging technologies that could overcome fundamental human limitations, as well as the ethics of developing and using such technologies. They speculate that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with such greatly expanded abilities as to merit the label "posthuman". David Pearce (born 3 April) is a British philosopher. He promotes the idea that there exists a strong ethical imperative for humans to work towards the abolition of suffering in all sentient life. His book-length internet manifesto The Hedonistic Imperative outlines how technologies such as genetic engineering, nanotechnology, pharmacology, and neurosurgery could potentially converge to eliminate all forms of unpleasant experience among human and non-human animals, replacing suffering with gradients of well-being, a project he refers to as "paradise engineering". 02.02.2022

David Pearce, arrested for the case of a model and her friend, pleads not guilty in separate case Giles and Cabrales-Arzola are believed to have met the three men at an after-hours warehouse party in the Eastside of L.A. earlier on Nov. 13, but they continued their night at Pearce’s apartment on Olympic Boulevard. A Los Angeles man arrested for the deaths of a model and her friend pleaded not guilty to unrelated rape charges involving four alleged victims. Pearce, 39, was arrested on December 15 for the overdose deaths of architect Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola, 26, and model Christy Giles, 24. He was charged two days later for the separate rape and sexual assault case. At Monday’s hearing, Deputy District Attorney Catherine Mariano said Pearce should remain behind bars on $3.4 million bail because investigators found $30,000 and a passport in Pearce’s car when he was arrested. Pearce has not been charged for Giles and Cabrales-Arzola’s November 13 deaths, but Mariano said the investigation is continuing. “He frequently drugs women and sexually abuses them,” Mariano said to the judge at Monday’s hearing. “I do believe he poses as a threat to the public and is a flight risk. Upon his arrest, he did try to flee and ran out the back door.” The prosecutor added investigators found evidence that Pearce was researching about living in foreign countries that do not extradite American defendants, such as Ukraine Defense attorney Jacob Glucksman, who asked the judge to consider lowering his client’s bail to $100,000, argued the criminal enhancements filed by the prosecutor goes against L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón’s policies. Glucksman said reform-minded Gascón’s policies allows for the release of defendants under certain conditions. He told the judge that Pearce, who does not have a criminal record, should also be considered to be released on a lower bail if he agrees to wear a GPS tracking device. The defense attorney also explained the $30,000 found in Pearce’s car was from winnings from a recent Vegas trip. Glucksman said Pearce’s vehicle did not have a license plate because his client was involved in a car accident a few weeks before his arrest. Judge Victoria Wilson, however, said she believed Pearce poses a threat to society and denied Glucksman’s motion to reduce the $3.4 million bail. The judge noted prosecutors alleged Pearce had raped one of the alleged victims with a wine bottle and threatened a victim and her family by sending them a video. “Mr. Pearce engages in violence … he is a serial rapist,” Wilson said. “In terms of public safety and seriousness of the crimes, the court finds he is a threat to public safety.” Pearce, 39, is facing two counts of forcible rape, one count of raping an unconscious or asleep person and one count of sexual penetration for a foreign object. According to prosecutors, Pearce allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in 2010, raped another woman in 2019, and two more women in February and October 2020. Mariano told The Post after Monday’s hearing that detectives are continuing to investigate Pearce’s involvement in the deaths of Giles and Cabrales-Arzola. In a bail motion, Glucksman said Pearce works as a freelance entertainment event planner and lives paycheck to paycheck, so he would not be able to afford the minimum to pay the $3.4 million bail related to the rape charges. At Monday’s hearing, Glucksman also said keeping Pearce in jail during the COVID surge is dangerous because Pearce suffers from pre-existing health conditions. He said Pearce has not been vaccinated against COVID. Judge Wilson, however, said Pearce could get vaccinated through the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. Two other men, Brandt Osborn, 42, and Michael Ansbach, 47, also were arrested in connection to the deaths of Giles and Cabrales-Arzola. Both were booked on suspicion of being accessories to manslaughter, however, the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office rejected the LAPD’s case against Osborn and his arrest was retroactively reduced to a detention, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Ansbach, a cinematographer and cameraman, was released on December 16 on $100,000 bond. Prosecutors have yet to file charges against him. David Pearce - Brave New World ? - A Defense Of Paradise-Engineering

3632

00:21:07
11.03.2014

The beginning and conclusion of David Pearce's writing: 🤍 Subscribe to this Channel: 🤍 Brave New World (1932) is one of the most bewitching and insidious works of literature ever written. An exaggeration? Tragically, no. Brave New World has come to serve as the false symbol for any regime of universal happiness. For sure, Huxley was writing a satirical piece of fiction, not scientific prophecy. Hence to treat his masterpiece as ill-conceived futurology rather than a work of great literature might seem to miss the point. Yet the knee-jerk response of "It's Brave New World!" to any blueprint for chemically-driven happiness has delayed research into paradise-engineering for all sentient life. So how does Huxley turn a future where we're all notionally happy into the archetypal dystopia? If it's technically feasible, what's wrong with using biotechnology to get rid of mental pain altogether? Brave New World is an unsettling, loveless and even sinister place. This is because Huxley endows his "ideal" society with features calculated to alienate his audience. Typically, reading BNW elicits the very same disturbing feelings in the reader which the society it depicts has notionally vanquished - not a sense of joyful anticipation. In Brave New World Revisited (1958) Huxley describes BNW as a "nightmare". Thus BNW doesn't, and isn't intended by its author to, evoke just how wonderful our lives could be if the human genome were intelligently rewritten. In the era of post-genomic medicine, our DNA is likely to be spliced and edited so we can all enjoy life-long bliss, awesome peak experiences, and a spectrum of outrageously good designer-drugs. Nor does Huxley's comparatively sympathetic account of the life of the Savage on the Reservation convey just how nasty the old regime of pain, disease and unhappiness can be. If you think it does, then you enjoy an enviably sheltered life and an enviably cosy imagination. For it's all sugar-coated pseudo-realism. In Brave New World, Huxley contrives to exploit the anxieties of his bourgeois audience about both Soviet Communism and Fordist American capitalism. He taps into, and then feeds, our revulsion at Pavlovian-style behavioural conditioning and eugenics. Worse, it is suggested that the price of universal happiness will be the sacrifice of the most hallowed shibboleths of our culture: "motherhood", "home", "family", "freedom", even "love". The exchange yields an insipid happiness that's unworthy of the name. Its evocation arouses our unease and distaste. In BNW, happiness derives from consuming mass-produced goods, sports such as Obstacle Golf and Centrifugal Bumble-puppy, promiscuous sex, "the feelies", and most famously of all, a supposedly perfect pleasure-drug, soma. As perfect pleasure-drugs go, soma underwhelms. It's not really a utopian wonderdrug at all. It does make you high. Yet it's more akin to a hangoverless tranquilliser or an opiate - or a psychic anaesthetising SSRI like Prozac - than a truly life-transforming elixir. Third-millennium neuropharmacology, by contrast, will deliver a vastly richer product-range of designer-drugs to order. For a start, soma is a very one-dimensional euphoriant. It gives rise to only a shallow, unempathetic and intellectually uninteresting well-being. Apparently, taking soma doesn't give Bernard Marx, the disaffected sleep-learning specialist, more than a cheap thrill. Nor does it make him happy with his station in life. John the Savage commits suicide soon after taking soma [guilt and despair born of serotonin depletion!?]. The drug is said to be better than (promiscuous) sex - the only sex brave new worlders practise. But a regimen of soma doesn't deliver anything sublime or life-enriching. It doesn't catalyse any mystical epiphanies, intellectual breakthroughs or life-defining insights. It doesn't in any way promote personal growth. Instead, soma provides a mindless, inauthentic "imbecile happiness" - a vacuous escapism which makes people comfortable with their lack of freedom. The drug heightens suggestibility, leaving its users vulnerable to government propaganda. Soma is a narcotic that raises "a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds." ... 🤍 Science, Technology & the Future: 🤍 Humanity+: 🤍 "One practical consequence has been to heighten our already exaggerated fears of state-sanctioned mood-drugs. Hence millions of screwed-up minds, improvable even today by clinically-tested mood-boosters and anti-anxiety agents, just suffer in silence instead.[...] the human cost in fruitless ill-being is immense"
