Music was an essential part of civic, religious, and courtly life in the Renaissance. ... The most important music of the early Renaissance was composed for use by the church—polyphonic (made up of several simultaneous melodies) masses and motets in Latin for important churches and court chapels. The Renaissance followed on from the Middle Ages and was for musicians an era of discovery, innovation and exploration - the name means 'rebirth'. It covers the music from 1400 to 1600.

Auld Lang Syne - The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin

OUR BRAND-NEW HOLIDAY ALBUM ‘Be All Merry’ IS AVAILABLE HERE: 🤍 Auld Lang Syne Scottish Traditional (arr. Desmond Earley) Text by Robert Burns The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin Solo: Kiri O’Neill Released on Signum Records Website: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍ChoralScholars For decades, on these islands, the passage from the old to the new year at midnight has been celebrated by singing Robert Burns’ poem. This was first printed in 1788 although the author himself acknowledged that its origins lie in an earlier Scots-language ballad printed in 1711 by James Wilson. In this graceful arrangement, we hear the standard English version of the text set to a traditional Scottish melody. Sopranos and altos predominate in the four verses, sometimes in unison and, at times, underpinned by a Scottish- sounding drone. In contrast, the chorus is richly sung by the full complement of voices. LYRICS: Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll take a cup of kindness yet for auld lang syne. And surely you’ll buy your pint cup, and surely I’ll buy mine! And we’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne. For auld lang syne ... We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun ‘till dine; But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne. For auld lang syne ... And there’s a hand my trusty friend! And gi’es a hand o’ thine! We’ll take a right goodwill draught, for auld lang syne! For auld lang syne ... Sacred Treasures III: Choral Masterworks from Russia and Beyond

About: The fourteen selections comprising Sacred Treasures III feature music from the Russian liturgical canon recorded in sumptuously reverberant settings by leading Russian choruses. With a state-of-the-art mastering job to fully display the subtle harmonic interplay of the singers, this release offers pure balm for the ear and soul. The music covers a wide burst of historically important pieces, from ancient Greek Orthodox chant through early 20th Century choral masterpieces of Rachmaninov, plus one modern fantasy setting of Bach's Apollonian masterpiece "Komm Susser Tod" ("Come Sweet Death") by Scandinavian composer Gunnar Eriksson. The collection opens with an anonymous 13th Century Russian "Alleluia," set in the calmest tradition of the Orthodox service, followed by a "Sourp, Sourp" ("Holy, Holy") from the Divine Liturgy. Both are sung by the ST. PETERSBURG CHAMBER CHOIR, directed by Nikolai Korniev. More familiar, perhaps, are the four sections of Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom from 1910, sung by the large Russian State Symphony capella. There are three additional sections from Rachmaninov's Vespers collection of 1915, sung by the USSR MINISTRY OF CULTURE CHAMBER CHOIR under Valery Polyansky's direction. Should you know of savage beasts in need of calming, the Kiev Chant "Peaceful Light" (track 10) from Rachmaninov's Vespers will turn away all monsters. The recording also aims to represent the reverential dignity of the music. Following the traditions of the Orthodox Church, no instruments are sounded - not even bells. Everything about the music and the physical setting in which it is heard is designed to produce a feeling of heavenly peace. The music is never harsh, but rather blends into the richly decorated surroundings, lit primarily by candle light. All of these selections are designed to fit within the soft golden glow of ecclesiastical tranquillity. Rachmaninov's seven pieces are spread among a variety of other unusual works ranging from the wordless "Chorale" by Josef Ketchakmadze to the little "Serenade" by Rachmaninov's composition teacher, Sergei Taneyev (1850-1915), sung by the LEGE ARTIS CHAMBER CHOIR under Boris Abalian's direction in St. Catherine's Lutheran Church, St. Petersburg. (Yes, they have Protestant and Catholic churches in Russia.) Easily the most unusual and unexpected item in the collection is the setting of "The Lord's Prayer" by of all people Rimsky-Korsakov. Known for his virtuoso orchestral music, few will expect so deeply devout and reverent a piece from this composer. Although his choral music is rarely performed or recorded, he published several collections of religious texts, as well as 39 superb choral settings of Russian folk tunes. This version of "Our Father" is drawn from Rimsky's Opus 22 collection. Only with the fall of the Iron Curtain ten years ago has much music of this warmly spiritual type made inroads into the Western world. That which has emerged has indeed proven to be a sacred treasury, individual in that it combines spiritual dignity with unabashed human emotion music reflecting aspiration and pure love. All are couched within pure syllabic settings, free of formal counterpoint. While this music offers a high level of artistry, at the same time it refuses to call attention to its internal workings. (When first you encounter Sacred Treasures III, listen to Track 10 and you'll hear what I mean.) - You can buy it here: 🤍

Prokoshina and V. Klodina, precentors) 21:25 The Moon Is Shining (Voronezh Folk Chorus and Orchestra, conducted by K. Massalitinov) 24:38 Meadowland (Alexandrov Song and Dance Ensemble, conducted by B. A. Alexandrov) 27:41 Evening On the Roadstead (Alexandrov Song and Dance Ensemble, conducted by B. A. Alexandrov; V. Nikitin and V. Katerinsky, soloists) 31:30 Down The Volga River (Serge Lemeshev, tenor; Orchestra conducted by V. Osipov) 34:57 I Was In The Garden (State Chorus of Russian Song, conducted by A. Sveshnikov; I. Blagorsklonova, soloist) 38:28 Among The Flat Dales (Maxim Mikhailov, bass; State Folk Orchestra, conducted by D. Osipov) 42:32 Along The Petersky (Boris Gmirya, baritone; State Folk Orchestra, conducted by D. Osipov) 44:51 From Beyond The Island (Alexander Pirogov, bass; Orchestra conducted by D. Osipov) Many of the songs on this record have made their way over the world. Others will sound like old friends, even though they are new to the hearers, for the typical melodic shapes and patterns of Russian folk music have become the base for a host of vastly popular orchestral and concert works. In no country have the composers so eagerly and creatively explored the mine of folk music as Russia, starting with Glinka, Mussorgsky, Tchaikowsky and Rimsky-Korsakov in the past century. Also a number of popular songs, composed in the folk vein, have become absorbed into the body of folk music, so that today in Russia, the distinction between “folk” and “popular” is a very tenuous one. The performers on this record fall into two groups. On the one hand there are the renowned operatic and concert singers. Ivan Kozlowsky and Serge Lemeshev are two of the leading tenors of the Bolshoi Opera. Maxim Mikhailov, Mark Reizen and Alexander Pirogov are basses who perform Boris Godunov, Prince Igor and other roles in the tradition of the great Feodor Chaliapin. M. P. Maksakova sings leading mezzo-soprano roles, and Boris Gmirya is a first-rank baritone of the Kiev opera. And on the other hand there are the famous choral and instrumental groups who make a specialty of folksong and dance. The Alexandrov Ensemble of Song and Dance is the Red Army group, named after its late director, V. A. Alexandrov, who was also a prolific composer and arranger. Also heard here are the Piatnitzky Chorus, and the Chorus of the Voronezh Region. KOROBEINIKI (THE PEDDLER) Also called “The Box,” this song tells of a carved birch box which the singer hopes will be bought by a beautiful dark-haired girl. KALEENKA (THE LITTLE SNOWBALL TREE) The “snowball tree” and mistletoe are long associated with a special magic pertaining to love and kisses. OH THOU VOLGA As the Mississippi is to American literature and folklore, so the Volga is to Russian song. Volga songs are invariably majestic, and typical is this, the words of which is a series of variations on the theme: Oh Volga, you little. Oh you Volga, you beautiful one. THE DARK-EYEBROWED AND DARK-EYED ONE In the folk vein. A Ukranian dance and love song, in it the lass says that she cannot forget the dark-eyed youth, and gesks the are about to tell him about her. THE EVENING BELLS This song has its origin in the 19th century, being based on a poem (1828) by Kozlov which found its way into the popular songbooks. BEFORE THE PEOPLE IN A DANCE This is a farm song, arranged by L. Shimkov, on an age-old theme. AND WHO KNOWS HIM? A popular song in folk style, by V. Zakharov. THE MOON IS SHINING This is one of the most widely known of old Russian dancing songs, with Gypsy influence. The rollicking singers invite the listener into their sleigh. MEADOWLAND This song won wide popularity, both within and outside of Russia, during the war against the Hitler invasion. It was composed in the 1930’s by Lev Knipper, who was born in Tiflis in 1898, studied with Gliere, became army and navy music instructor, and has composed many large-scale orchestral and vocal works. He has also done extensive research in folklore. EVENING ON THE ROADSTEAD Written by V. Soloviev-Sedoy, this army song, also taken up by the navy, likewise attained great popularity during the war against fascism.

Lyrics: Oh, Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side, The summer’s gone and all the roses falling, It’s you, it’s you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer’s in the meadow, Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow, It’s I’ll be here in sunshine or in shadow, Oh, Danny Boy, oh Danny boy I love you so! But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I may well be Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Ave there for me; And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be, For you will bend and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!

This video was produced under strict safety protocols from University College Dublin's Safety Office. All those not in front of the camera wore masks at all times, with social distancing and regular temperature checks in operation throughout the production. About 'Courting is a Pleasure': Found masquerading under a variety of names throughout the Irish tradition, such as ‘Farewell Ballymoney’, and ‘Going to Mass Last Sunday’, 'Courting is a Pleasure' is a song of false love, betrayal, and emigration. Typically sung from the male perspective about a false young woman named Molly, here we have altered it to a female, singing about her dear love Jonny. In this traditional Irish song the girl sings a tale of an unhappy courtship after being slighted by her sweetheart Jonny, she warns people to be wary of men with a roving eye. The protagonist of the song curses the man in question and leaves Ireland for America bidding farewell to her sweet Ballymoney and Antrim. While the author remains unknown, the song itself is well-traveled and can be found amongst broadside ballads in the North of America. LYRICS : Courting is a pleasure Between my love and I And it's down in yonder valley I would meet him by and by. It’s down in yonder valley he is my heart's delight: “and it’s with you lovely Jonny  I would spend till broad daylight."   Going to mass last Sunday, My love, he passed me by. I knew his mind was altered By the roving of his eye. I knew his mind was altered To a lass of high degree: “Oh Jonny, lovely Jonny   Your looks have wounded me."   I then took out a bottle And I held it in my hand. Saying “Here’s a glass dear Jonny For our courtship is at an end. So raise your glass dear Jonny, Drink the bottle dry for me For there are 10 guineas wagered that married we’ll ner be”.   Oh never court a wee lad With a dark and a roving-eye Just kiss him and embrace him,  never tell him the reason why Just kiss him and embrace him Till you cause his heart to yield For a faint-hearted soldier never gained a battlefield   Oh farewell Ballymoney And to county Antrim too. Likewise farewell dear Jonny, I will bid you a fond adieu. America lies far away Across the ocean blue. And I’m bound for there dear Jonny And again I’ll ner see you. So raise your glass dear Jonny Drink the bottle dry for me And I’m bound for there dear Jonny And again I’ll ner see you. Tchaikovsky : Overture 1812 (Full, Choral) (Sure, best version ever) - Ashkenazy*

Famous and very realistic. The choral contributions are very spectacular and effective. And the cannons are as they should be: not blazing out the music ! This is not cannons with behind them overture 1812.This is 1812 with realistic Cannons! In this transcription by American conductor Igor Buketoff the following changes and additions were made: The opening segment, God Preserve Thy People is sung a cappella by a choir. A children's or women's choir is added to the flute and cor anglais duet rendition of At the Gate, at my Gate. The orchestra and chorus unite in the climax with a triumphant version of God Preserve Thy People and God Save the Tsar. See Also: Slavonic March with cannons: :🤍 And see if you will blow away: Overture 1812 with Muskets, extra Cannons & spectacular battles with the same musical performance : Overture 1812 THE MOVIE: 🤍
