From the 🤍 Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, "Brazil". Stock footage available from 🤍 Transcript: THE INTRIGUING WORLDS OF MACUMBA; CANDOMBLE AND UMBANDA........... IT WAS THROUGH THE PORTALS OF BAHIA, THE CENTER OF THE BRAZILIAN SLAVE TRADE, THAT THREE TO FIVE MILLION AFRICANS WERE FIRST BROUGHT TO THE NEW WORLD. MISSIONARIES BAPTIZED THEM WHEN THEY LANDED, BUT DIDN'T CARE IF THEY KEPT THEIR DRUMS, THEIR SONGS, STATUES BAHIA AND SOME OF THEIR OWN CUSTOMS. ALTHOUGH THE CATHOLIC CHURCH LATER ATTEMPTED TO SUPPRESS 9.36.50 PAN TO AFRICAN RELIGION, THE SLAVES WERE ABLE TO INCORPORATE WHAT TODAY IS CALLED CANDOMBLE. AS PRACTICED NOW, CANDOMBLE REMAINS CLOSE IN FORM TO THE ORIGINAL white? AFRICAN RELIGIONS BROUGHT BY THE SLAVES. UMBANDA, THE MOST POPULAR FORM OF MACUMBA, IS A COLORFUL BLEND OF CANDOMBLE, CATHOLICISM, AMERICAN INDIAN RELIGIONS AND EUROPEAN SPIRITUALISM. A CENTRAL FEATURE OF UMBANDA IS AN ALTERED STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS DESCRIBED BY DEVOTEES AS POSSESSION BY SUPERNATURAL BEINGS. SPIRIT POSSESSION IS A STATE IN WHICH THE MEDIUM'S OWN CONSCIOUSNESS LEAVES, AND HIS BODY IS ENTERED BY THE POSSESSING ENTITY. THIS ENTITY MAY BE ANY OF A WIDE VARIETY OF AFRICAN DIETIES, INDIAN SPIRITS, WISE OLD SLAVES, OR INHABITANTS OF BRAZIL'S DEMI MONDE OF PETTY CRIMINALS, BANDITS, COWBOYS AND PROSTITUTES. DRUMMING, SINGING, AND DANCING ACCOMPANY THE CELEBRATION AS THE SPIRITS ARRIVE, ORDERING FOOD, DRINKS, CIGARS, SPECIAL COSTUMES OR WHATEVER IT IS THEY LIKE. THE POSSESSION TAKES HOLD WITH A VIOLENT SEIZURE DURING WHICH THE MEDIUM IS PROTECTED FROM INJURY BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GROUP. BY THE END OF THE NIGHT ALMOST EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATES IS VISITED BY AT LEAST ONE POSSESSING SPIRIT. UMBANDA MEMBERS REPORT FEELING SPIRITUALLY OR PSYCHOLOGICALLY "CLEANSED" AFTER RECOVERING FROM POSSESSION. ANTHROPOLOGISTS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, AND MEDICAL DOCTORS HAVE BEEN INTRIGUED BY THE SUCCESS OF UMBANDA IN TREATING CERTAIN PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EVEN MEDICAL PROBLEMS. THROUGH UMBANDA, THE DISPOSSESSED SEEM TO REGAIN A SENSE OF POWER AND RESPECT BY ASSOCIATING THEMSELVES WITH POWERFUL SUPERNATURAL FORCES. UMBANDA ALSO HELPS TO INTEGRATE THE ADHERENT'S PERSONALITY BY ALLOWING THE EXPRESSION OF REPRESSED ASPECTS OF HIS OR HER PERSONALITY IN THE CONTEXT OF POSSESSION . HOWEVER IT IS UNDERSTOOD OR EXPLAINED, UMBANDA FUNCTIONS AS A PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR THE POOR ...... PEOPLE COME SEEKING SOLUTIONS TO THEIR PROBLEMS AND UMBANDA OFFERS THEM THE HELP THEY NEED. IN RECENT YEARS UMBANDA HAS BECOME A POWERFUL FORCE LADY IN SAO PAULO? IN BRAZIL'S POPULAR CULTURE, PROVIDING A MEANS OF EXPRESSION AND CREATIVITY, AND IT'S INFLUENCE CAN BE FELT THROUGHOUT BRAZIL.

ORIXÁ OSSAIM - BRAZILIAN AFRICAN-DERIVED RELIGION - CANDOMBLE

AFRICAN-DERIVED RELIGIONS IN BRAZIL African-derived religions in Brazil include, most prominently, Candomblé and Umbanda, as well as Xango, Batuque, Cantimbo, and Macumba, which are regionally associated traditions. African-derived religions have played an important role in the formation of Afro-Brazilian ethnic identities, both historically and today. Such traditions have been both celebrated and denigrated at different times and by different actors, from the Catholic Church in the post-independence era—which characterized them as evidence of “backwards” African culture and Afro-Brazilians as failing to become “true Catholics”—to today’s Pentecostals, who condemn Candomblé and Umbanda as “devil worship.” Not all African religions survived to become African-derived religions. Islam, for example, was the religion of many of the Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, and other slaves brought to Brazil, but was subsumed by other practices that gave rise to Candomblé and Umbanda. Thus, today’s practices represent an amalgam of various traditions, which continue to evolve in conversation with practitioners in Nigeria and elsewhere in West Africa. Though statistics report that Candomblé and other African-derived religious participants are few in number—under 5% of the population—this fails to reflect the many Brazilians who are not initiates but who nonetheless may visit a practitioners (such as a healer), perhaps to address a challenge around health, money, or love. In fact, the 2010 census found that 13% of the Brazilian population claim to have more than one religion, usually Catholic and Umbanda or Catholic and Spiritist. As suggested by the common Brazilian saying, “if one does not come due to love, one comes due to pain,” solving the problems of life, particularly physical healing, is central to both Candomblé and Umbanda. Illness, diagnosis, and cure all have a supernatural aspect and many of the religious rituals are strategies for maintaining or restoring physical, mental, or social well-being. Possession is another characteristic of African-derived religion, locating liminality within the physical being. Candomblé Candomblé draws on the religious traditions of a multiplicity of African ethnic groups, but especially the Yoruba, Fon, and Bantu. Like Santeria and Voudoun elsewhere, Candomblé recognizes a pantheon of deities known as orishas (orixás), many of whom are associated with Catholic saints, a reflection of early syncretism under slavery as slaves were forced to hide their beliefs within the veil of Catholicism. Full participation requires initiation, a lengthy ceremonial process during which an initiate becomes bound to a particular orisha. Daily practice at a terreiro, a Candomblé temple, includes the fulfillment of various ritual obligations, offering food and sometimes animal sacrifices to an orisha or orishas, public and private celebrations, consultations with clients, and celebrations. Public festivities draw a wide range of onlookers, from devotees, to Brazilians and tourists for whom the cultural aspects of Candomblé appeal strongly. 🤍

How in the 19th century black African slaves deported to Brazil and forcibly evangelized by Christians, liberate themselves generation after generation in the Candomblé ceremonies in Salvador de Bahia in Brazil. Our documentary explores the vividness of African beliefs, Yoruba in this case, in the face of Christian rituals practiced today, and shows the particular syncretism that arose from this encounter. In Bahia two authentic "Candomblé" rites, normally secret, were filmed, "fathers of saints" and "mothers of saints" speak of their faith in spirits. An experience that we are not indifferent to.

Confira! Buy from Bandcamp : 🤍 Stream on Spotify : 🤍 Multi Culti are proud to present the debut EP from Sao Paolo's Voodoohop resident, Thomash. DJ Thomash has set up one of the most influential nights in the bazooming Brazilian scene with his Voodoohop party, a fusion of tropical hedonism and avant-garde trance-inducing European electronic music, a lively mix that no doubt has its genesis in his transplanted German roots (he's from Cologne aka Kompakt-ville). He's shared the stage with guys like Rebolledo, Joakim, Acid Pauli and more, and now finally looks to colonize the world with his first release. Interestingly, Thomash has a degree in artificial intelligence, so while it might just be our imagination, it does seem that the rhythms, full of oddly tuned percussion and colorful synth stabs seem imbued with a distinct internal logic, playful forms that bounce off each other in their own reality, according to their own laws. This narrative of the ethnoid, German-Brazilian AI ties in nicely with the title: Candomble is the name of an Afro-Brazilian religion, meaning literally 'dance in honour of the gods.' Fortunately for us, Thomash seems to be honouring some scarcely acknowledged, far-out deities... spritely DMT-elves. Ectoplasma further plays into this reading, both in title and in vibe, floating unconcerned with material dancefloor goals into a space of peaceful imagination and spirit. Finally, Calango Fumando Palha is a soft, dreamy morning peyote-fire anthem… a healing latin lullaby to soothe troubles and set positive vibes free. Called in to take us deeper into the trip are Multi Culti's go-to sooth-sayers DREEMS, who lead us forwards in full-chakra-alignment with the originals, bringing bigger bass into the heart of the jungle, tripping on acid, leaving us loose-limbed, wide-eyed, and open-minded in bliss as the final chords tuck us in and kiss us goodnight. Sweet Dreems! 🤍 🤍

Candomblé at a glance (BBC) Candomblé is a religion based on African beliefs which is particularly popular in Brazil. It is also practised in other countries, and has as many as two million followers (?... I believe there are way more than 2 million... Francisco Lacaz Ruiz, the video maker) The religion is a mixture of traditional Yoruba, Fon and Bantu beliefs which originated from different regions in Africa. It has also incorporated some aspects of the Catholic faith over time. A religion which combines elements of many religions is called a syncretic religion. Enslaved Africans brought their beliefs with them when they were shipped to Brazil during the slave trade. The name Candomblé means 'dance in honour of the gods'. Practitioners of Candomblé believe in one all powerful God called Oludumaré who is served by lesser deities. These deities are called orixas. (They can also be called voduns and inkices.) Candomblé practitioners believe that every person has their own individual orixa which controls his or her destiny and acts as a protector. Music and dance are important parts of Candomblé ceremonies. Specially choreographed dances are performed by worshippers to enable them to become possessed by the orixas. There is no concept of good or bad in Candomblé. Each person is only required to fulfil his or her destiny to the fullest, regardless of what that is. Candomblé is an oral tradition and therefore has no holy scriptures. The first official temple was founded at the beginning of the 19th century in Salvador, Bahia in Brazil. 🤍 The ceremony depicted on the video is a "Xirê", a praisal to the 16 more common Orishas that goes for about 6 or 7 hours and is open to the non initiated persons. In the days preceding the Xirê, a series of internal rituals take place at the "Axé" or "Ilê" (both terms used to refer to each House of Candomblé)

This music has had such a deep impact on our lives. I had the pleasure of growing up in my Mestre's dance company (Ballet Foclorico Do Brasil) with my sister Mestra Minha Velha. Here we not only performed Capoeira, but learned and trained Samba and Candomble music and dance. We are both so grateful to our Mestre, Amen Santo, for giving us this opportunity to learn, sharing the richness of his culture, and connecting us to people who could further our studies. Though it's not our religion, we have the deepest respect for the these traditions, history, and it is a part of who we are today. Capoeira music is directly related to this tradition. So many of the variations we play and the songs we sing come from Candomble. You don't have to be a part of the religion to appreciate, respect, and feel it. As.) de nuestra institución.

ORIXÁS or ORISHAS The deities worshipped in the Candomblé religion and brought to Brazil by abducted slaves, especially the Yoruba people. In Africa, these were kings, queens, mythical heroes and other ancestors raised to the status of gods. "Originally every group worshipped its own ancestors in Africa, and every township was bound to a local deity, often an ancestor of the local ruling dynasty, a leader of one's own clan, or a person who somehow uniquely helped and supported the group. ... Because of the changed conditions in the Diaspora, there developed a genuine pantheon of deities, in which a large number of Orixás were concentrated in the same terreiro *) as a mythical space. First and foremost was the maintaining of a symbolic heritage that supported all responsibility for the continuity of the African view of the world in exile. A repertoire of laws, focused on one's origins, was newly established in order to preserve the creative basis of African religiousness." "The Orixás are revelations of the spiritual power of the highest-ranking deity Olorun *). They are the mediators between the Supreme Being of Olorun and believers. The Orixás are ancestors as well as forces of nature." The Orixás clearly have their weakness and can make errors and mistakes. In his book Orixas Pierre Verger compares the Yoruba deities in Africa and the New World, and he assigns human archetypes to them. Every believer lives his entire life under the protection of his individually chosen Orixá. The Orixás are closely connected to forces of nature such as air and water, as well as to mountains and animals. In addition, each deity has a specific attribute: a color, a metal, a day of the week, a favorite dish, a certain drumbeat, etc... Several Orixás also have concrete tasks and social functions, for example Xango's as a warrior, Oxossi's as a hunter, and Ogun's as a blacksmith. In Brazil and other nations of the Americas - as in Cuba with the Santería - the African deities were disguised through their association with Catholic saints in order to practice the religion in spite of it being forbidden. In the Brazilian Candomblé, for example, Xango corresponds with Saint Hieronymus and Oxossi with Saint George.
