A journey through all relevant sensor and film sizes compared by size – from 1/3 inch to IMAX – with samples. This is an older video and there a some mistakes in the 35mm variants. Anamorphic processes don't use a super 35 at full aperture but the academy sized negative. Image quality is not just about megapixels. Here are 7 useful facts that help define image quality. When it comes to image quality, there is a big misconception that if you want better quality, you need more megapixels. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) it isn’t that straightforward. Over the years camera manufacturers have dedicated much of their efforts to improve the number of megapixels in their latest models. At the start of the century, both Nikon and Canon were producing DSLRs with just 3MP — a far cry from the 100MP cameras we see today. This drive has led many to believe that megapixels are all that matters when it comes to image quality, but to better understand image quality, considering the number of megapixels alone isn’t enough. You also need to look at the size and type of image sensor, understand how images are formed, how light is focused onto the sensor, the impact of lens choice and quality, and consider the pixel size to get the full picture. I take photographs with everything from my camera phone, a 1 inch sensor, a crop sensor and a full frame sensor...and they all do a very good job at getting a photo...but they do have their strengths and weaknesses so do you really need a full frame camera? APS-C sensors are smaller than full frame sensors, well that's easy, now the complicated part. Does a 100 mmm full frame lens become a 160mm lens, just by adding it to an APS-C camera body? Of course not !! although I have had arguments about it with some relatively intelligent people. What happens is that it appears to be a longer focal length because all your seeing is the centre part of an image, exactly the same as if you were looking at the centre of a full frame image. Except the image is smaller because it has had its edges cut off ,compared to what you would see on a full frame camera. The beginner and even some advanced photographers find this difficult to comprehend. We should really think about comparisons, what lens would I need to have the same result on a aps-c sensor as a full frame sensor. Well if we have a 160mm lens on a full frame camera to get exactly the same result without moving we would need a wider angle lens in fact as the smaller sensor has a crop factor of 1:6 it would need a 100 mm lens. This is of course the major difference between small and full frame sensor cameras simply image size. Another interesting question is would a 20mp full frame sensor be better quality than a 32mp aps-c sensor ? I wish I was an amateur photographer again , I wouldn't have to think about it :))

This is a follow up to my previous video with regard to selecting the right scope for imaging. However, this video shows how the camera sensor size and pixel size along with the telescope are factored into the equation to produce the image. This also leads to other concepts such as resolution, scale, oversampling, and undersampling which I will also discuss. Why am I suddenly worried about all this, well I purchased a Celestron Edge HD8 a couple of months ago and wanted to ensure my new imaging train would work. I have no clue when this scope will arrive - it may still be in China or sitting on a cargo ship waiting to dock in LA. You will know what it means if your camera uses a full frame, APS-C, or Micro 4/3 size sensor and how that will affect your camera's low light performance, depth of field, and your lenses' focal length. Camera lenses' focal lengths are based on a Full Frame camera sensor, and any Sensor size less than full frame, such as APS-C and Micro 4/3, will result in a change in the lens' equivalent focal length. APS-C will have a crop factor of 1.5x turning a 50mm into looking like a 75mm, and Micro four thirds will have a crop factor of 2x making the same 50mm lens looking like a 100mm lens. Full frame cameras will also have better low light performance than APS-C and Micro 4/3 because the sensor is larger and can take in more light, which results in less noise in the picture in low light settings. Lastly, Full frame cameras will also produce a shallower depth of field (or a more blurry background) than Micro 4/3 and APS-C sensor sizes will at the same aperture. TL/DW - Larger format cameras have less noise because they have larger diameter openings per equivalent f stop of smaller sensor lenses. Here is a quick fun test, see if you can spot which of these cameras has a FULL FRAME sensor, and which has a tiny M4/3 sensor. (crop sensor) What difference does the sensor size make? Cameras featured are the Sony a7s and the Panasonic GH4 Both fitted with a Canon EF 50mm lens at f1.8 throughout. Both with the same WB, same distance, same f-stop, same ISO (200) only the shutter speed varies in order to achieve similar exposure. Note - the gh4 is using a metabones XL speedbooter for EF mount.
Focal length and sensor size play an important role in what you see through your viewfinder. If you have a full frame sensor, you can get great wide angle shots but the camera will be heavier. A crop sensor will be better at higher focal lengths to give you the reach to see things up close even though your subject might be far away.
