A rocket engine is both an immensely complex and important component within the space industry. New engines being developed such as BE-4 are trying to use unique propellants, provide greater power, and simplify engine reuse, just to name a few. While Blue Origin has had some issues over time with this specific engine including delays and various setbacks, they are starting to make significant progress. Just yesterday they released a new update on BE-4 with more details regarding its application to the New Glenn launch system and engine production. Not to mention, more info from Tory Bruno, the CEO of United Launch Alliance which has a major contract relating to the BE-4. All of which paints a promising picture for the future of not only this engine, but the multiple next-generation launch vehicles that rely on it. Bezos had invested US$1 billion a year in this space company. However, that doesn't mean it will be successful. Instead, Blue Origin is grappling with its pile of delayed missions. A lot of time and effort goes into the development of a next-generation rocket engine. A powerful and efficient rocket engine can significantly increase the capabilities of practically any launch vehicle. Blue Origin has experience with the current BE-3 engine but is hard at work on the next iteration. Blue Origin’s success with the BE-4 engine will have a major impact on future launch vehicles including New Glenn, Vulcan, and more. BE-4 is a next-generation rocket engine currently in development by Blue Origin. The goal is to create an extremely effective engine for future launch vehicles such as New Glenn. Over one decade ago in 2011, Blue Origin began development on the BE-4 engine. Since then, while the engine program most certainly had a few hiccups along the way, Blue Origin continued to develop and test the engine. Now in late 2022, the first flight BE-4s are only months away from their maiden launch at the bottom of ULA’s Vulcan Centaur. In addition to this upcoming milestone, Blue Origin recently announced that dozens of these engines are now in production to support a large and growing demand for various future launches. This increase in production will be necessary considering not one but two next-generation launch vehicles rely on BE-4. Both New Glenn and Vulcan need these engines for the majority of thrust on the first stage. If Blue Origin wants to continue providing these future rockets with propulsion, an increase in development and testing speed is needed. Blue origin failure is not an option anymore. Blue origin's updated BE-4 engine will disrupt every major space player in 2023 including elon musk's Spacex, NASA and china's tiangong space station! For a while now, Blue Origin has been working on its next generation BE-4 engine. Throughout this timeframe, the engine’s progress has been especially important as not one, but two future launch vehicles rely on it. Specifically, both Blue Origin’s New Glenn and ULA’s Vulcan will use multiple of these engines on the first stage. However, with the Vulcan scheduled to launch for the first time in only a few months, the need for flight ready BE-4s is at its highest. Thankfully for United Launch Alliance, just yesterday Blue Origin officially passed a flight BE-4 off to the company for Vulcan. This is quite significant as the deal between the companies has been a long time in the making and it looks as if ULA is finally getting some engines. Now, the company will move on to testing, and eventually, the first flight of Vulcan. While there have been quite a few delays in this process, this is a promising sign and a step in the right direction. The BE-4 is our fourth-generation liquid rocket engine, made to take us into orbit and beyond. The BE-4 uses oxygen-rich staged combustion of liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas to produce 550,000 lbs. of thrust. Liquefied natural gas is commercially available, affordable, and highly efficient for spaceflight. Unlike other rocket fuels, such as kerosene, liquefied natural gas can be used to pressurize a rocket’s propellant tanks. This is called autogenous pressurization and eliminates the need for costly and complex pressurization systems, like helium. Liquefied natural gas also leaves no soot byproducts as kerosene does, simplifying engine reuse. United Launch Alliance has selected Blue Origin’s BE-4 as the engine that will power the Vulcan rocket's first stage. Being introduced as an enabling low-cost, frequent access to space and the best way to build a road to space, but after a failure 4 months ago, Blue Origin New Shepard spacecraft remains in limbo, with No Move, No Progress. Meanwhile, SpaceX launched seven times in January 2023, implying that its 100-launch target is more realistic than it seems. Elon Musk's monster Starship is also ready for the first orbital flight. What a pitiful comparison, right? Let's expose everything about this in today's episode of Alpha Tech: More than four months have passed since the launch of Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket ended in failure. No humans were onboard the vehicle because it was conducting a suborbital scientific research mission, but the failure has grounded the New Shepard fleet ever since. The rocket's single main engine failed about one minute into the flight, at an altitude of around 9 km, as it was throttling back up after passing through the period of maximum dynamic pressure. At that point a large fire erupted in the BE-3 engine, and the New Shepard capsule's solid rocket motor-powered escape system fired as intended, pulling the capsule away from the exploding rocket. The capsule experienced high G-forces during this return but appeared to make a safe landing. Three days after this accident with the New Shepard-23 mission, the bipartisan leadership of the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics sent a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration, calling for a thorough investigation. In an interview with Ars later that month, the chair of the subcommittee, US Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), urged Blue Origin to be transparent. "I’m heavily in favor of transparency, and I’m hoping that the FAA comes through pretty quickly with this," Beyer said. "I would strongly encourage Blue Origin to be as transparent as possible, because that builds trust. It was a bold bet by ULA, a blueblood in space launch, on a new entrant to the market. But with the BE-4 engine, Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos was promising a relatively low-cost, high-performing engine with a power output comparable to a Space Shuttle main engine. At the time of this initial agreement, Blue Origin said the BE-4 would be "ready for flight" by 2017. 5 years have passed since, but that dream has not come true yet. Why are the engines late in the first place? One of the most persistent problems is that the BE-4 engine testing and development program has been relatively "hardware poor" in recent years. Effectively, this means that the factory in Washington has not had enough components to build development engines, and this has led to extended periods during which no testing has occurred on the stands in Texas. It was surprising to hear this because back in the spring of 2017 Blue Origin stated publicly that its development program was hardware rich. After arriving as CEO in late 2017, however, Bob Smith appears to have focused more on a substantial reorganization of Blue Origin's leadership rather than hardware development. Other programs were prioritized, too, so the BE-4 team did not get all the resources and freedom it needed to proceed at full throttle. Disaster! What Exactly Went Wrong With Blue Origin BE 4 Engine? Many speculate that the problem lies in the engine itself. The GAO report last summer appears to support this assertion. Although the report does not identify the engine directly, it states that technical challenges facing the development of Vulcan’s engines have endangered the timely launch of national security missions. “A U.S. produced rocket engine under development for ULA’s Vulcan launch vehicle is experiencing technical challenges related to the igniter and booster capabilities required and may not be qualified in time to support first launches beginning in 2021.” Disaster! Coming down to Blue Origin, a commercial space flight company the billionaire founded in 2000, success is not completely unheard of there either. The company is on record to have successfully landed its New Shepard rocket vertically after it returned from space, that is, the rocket landed upright on its legs. The boosters were even reused. Pretty cool achievement! Sadly, that’s all Blue Origin can boast of, despite the backing of its billionaire founder. Following Aerojet’s acquisition of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne in 2012, Blue Origin president Rob Meyerson saw an opportunity to fill a gap in the defense industrial base. Blue Origin publicly entered the liquid rocket engine business by partnering with ULA on the development of the BE-4 and working with other companies to replace Russia's RD-180. Unfortunately, it turns out that this opportunity is not easily achieved. On the contrary, it has become the grave for Blue Origin. The company began work on the BE-4 in 2011, although no public announcement was made until September 2014. This was their first engine to combust liquid oxygen and liquified natural gas propellants. In September 2014—in a choice labeled "a stunner" by SpaceNews—the large launch vehicle manufacturer and launch service provider United Launch Alliance selected the BE-4 as the main engine for a new primary launch vehicle. Blue Origin said the "BE-4 would be 'ready for flight' by 2017." However, until now, you can see, Blue Origin still has not delivered the engine to ULA. Right now the space industry is full of different companies and agencies all working on new and ambitious projects for the future. Some of these projects are next generation launch vehicles trying to change how we access space. However, one of the most important parts of any new rocket are the engines providing thrust and power. For years now Blue Origin has been working to develop, test, and manufacture the BE-4 engine. In the last few weeks, both Blue Origin and ULA CEO Tory Bruno have provided more updates on the engine’s progress and more. Throughout the space industry, we are watching different companies use a variety of unique methods to try and improve access to space. This process often revolves around lowering cost and improving launch cadence. Both of which are a direct result of partial and full reusability if done successfully. Some examples include SpaceX with Starship, Rocket Lab with Electron’s booster and Neutron, and also New Glenn. Blue Origin has been working on its next-generation BE-4 engine for many years now. Throughout its development and testing there have been some delays pushing back its completion and application to multiple future launch vehicles. This being said, recently the company has been making some significant progress and are just about ready to test these engines for the first time on an official launch. Only a few weeks ago we saw the delivery of one BE-4 flight engine to United Launch Alliance’s rocket factory in Decatur. Already installed on the rocket, the company only requires one more for its first Vulcan flight scheduled only months away. Fortunately, just yesterday ULA CEO Tory Bruno provided an update on the second flight engine and its expected delivery. Specifically, he showed off some full-duration testing of the flight engine and an estimate of when it should be delivered. This is very big news as once this engine is delivered, ULA will have practically everything they need for final testing and the first launch. Blue Origin's Engines completely FAIL! NO way to BEAT SpaceX... When someone asks how hard it is to build a rocket engine, it is logical to tell them about Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. It's actually quite a long story with many ups and downs, but in the end, Blue Origin engines completely fail! Let’s find out in today’s episode of Alpha Tech: First of all, we talk about Jeff's sole engine to get the rocket off the ground, BE-3. Blue Origin took ten years before they started developing the BE-3 engine. The BE-3 was big enough to go to orbit but Blue Origin did not design it as a low-cost orbital engine and did not put it into a rocket intended to reach orbit. The Blue Origin BE-3 engine began development in the early 2010s and completed acceptance testing in early 2015. The engine is being used on the New Shepard suborbital rocket, for which test flights began in 2015 and a first crewed flight occurred in 2021. The BE-3 has 160,000 lbf (80 tons of thrust). Blue Origin needed to make and test a lot of BE-3 class engines and get to orbit by 2012-2014. To compare, the SpaceX Merlin 1D engine was developed by SpaceX between 2011 and 2012, with its first flight in 2013. The design goals for the new engine included increased reliability, improved performance, and improved manufacturability. In 2011, performance goals for the engine were a vacuum thrust of 690 kN (155,000 lbf), a vacuum-specific impulse (Isp) of 310 s (3.0 km/s), an expansion ratio of 16 (as opposed to the previous 14.5 of the Merlin 1C) and chamber pressure in the “sweet spot” of 9.7 MPa (1,410 psi). By August 2011, SpaceX was producing Merlin engines at the rate of eight per month, planning eventually to raise production to about 33 engines per month. By 2015, they were making 250 Merlin engines per week. The biggest difference between them is the performance between BE-3 and Merlin. So far, while Merlin helped Falcon 9 become a broomstick that flies regularly. Falcon 9's success has become too common but BE-3 couldn't even get to orbit. Especially, a New Shepard rocket recently suffered a catastrophic engine failure during its 23rd launch attempt due to BE-3 failure, ending a seven-year streak of 21 successes. Measuring about 15 meters (49 ft) tall, 3.7 meters (12.1 ft) wide, and capable of producing about 50 tons (~110,000 lbf) of thrust with its lone BE-3 engine at full throttle, New Shepard only made it about halfway through its nominal powered ascent before catastrophe struck. The first signs of trouble appeared about 62 seconds after liftoff in the form of flickers and flashes in New Shepard’s exhaust, which is normally almost transparent. Less than two seconds after the first seemingly harmless flash, flames unintentionally burst from New Shepard’s engine section and quickly surrounded its BE-3PM engine. Less than a second after that, the rocket’s aft began shedding pieces and stopped producing thrust, triggering a solid rocket motor stored inside its deployable capsule. What Rocket Lab just did is totally humiliated Blue Origin after SpaceX... In the space race, no doubt SpaceX is the leader, miles ahead. However, in distant 2nd place is Rocket Lab, even beating out Bezos Blue Origin. Blue Origin has yet to orbit. Jeff Bezos' Rocket went to space—But not to orbit. They were planning to launch New Glenn by 2020 but the current schedule is first to launch no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2023. Meanwhile, Rocket Labs has 32 launches under its belt, 29 of which were successful. The Electron rocket can place 150-300 kilograms into orbit. The lower payload for a sun-synchronous orbit and the higher payload for a low earth orbit. Rocket Labs plans a Falcon 9 class rocket with a new Neutron rocket. Rocket Labs plans to launch the Neutron by 2024. Well, I’m talking about getting to "space" vs. orbit. This is how Elon Musk describes it: "One of the toughest things that are really hard to explain to people is orbit versus space. Getting to space is easy. Getting into orbit is hard. It’s 100 times harder to get to orbit than to get to what you’d call, in quotes, "space." Which is, say, the Karman line at 100 kilometers, which is an arbitrary point at which the atmosphere is fairly thin." Neil deGrasse Tyson also said that Blue is not really going to "space" they're flying to slightly higher than where planes go. They experience some weightless less but that is all. The difference is so obvious! More seriously, what Rocket Lab just did is totally humiliated Blue Origin after SpaceX... Elon only has bachelor's degrees in economics and physics, not aerospace engineering. Peter is even more unconventional, as he is a rocket scientist with no college degree whatsoever! In 1995, he worked as a tool-and-die-maker apprentice at Fisher & Paykel. He used his employer’s workshop to tinker on the side with rockets, making everything from rocket bikes to jet packs. From there he was able to purvey his career in product design and engineering, raking up a cornucopia of knowledge on smart materials, composites, and propulsion systems. This New Zealand native then founded Rocket Lab in 2006. He secured a crucial seed investment from the aptly named Mark Rocket, a fellow New Zealander who had made his riches online. Within just 3 years, the company successfully reached the Karman line of space with their multi-stage rocket, Ātea-1. So yeah, the next time someone tells you college is a necessity, tell them about this guy who got to space in 3 years with just a high school education. The 300-foot tall vertical firing stand was built and used in 1965 for Saturn V testing during the Apollo program, but it went offline in 1998 after being used for the Shuttle program. The engine ran for more than a minute as it was able to sustain its performance for some of the flight time required to leave the Earth's atmosphere. The video also provides a glimpse of the engine from its nozzle as it lights up. The nozzle is the region of a rocket engine that controls its thrust's interaction with the surrounding atmosphere. Looking 'up' from the nozzle one can spot the engine's injector plate that is above its combustion chamber. In this chamber, the engine's fuel, LNG, and Liquid Oxygen in the case of the BE-4 are combined and lit up to generate thrust. Sharing high-quality images of injector plates of newer engines are forbidden by U.S. law, so Blue Origin can only share low-quality videos at best. Do you like Blue Origin? As an observer in the space industry for quite a long time, we realize that whenever we discuss an issue related to Blue Origin, good or bad, people are strongly furious. Love it or hate it, there's definitely a reason. So, let's analyze why Blue Origin has so many anti-fans in today's episode of Alpha Tech: First of all, obviously, Bezos personally is no stranger to success. He controls Amazon, the biggest online commerce store ever known to man, which he founded. Of course, he stepped down from the role of CEO later last year but he was doing so as the richest man on earth. Bezos also has a media empire with his ownership of The Washington Post. Coming down to Blue Origin, a commercial space flight company the billionaire founded in 2000, success is not completely unheard of there either. The company is on record to have successfully landed its New Shepard rocket vertically after it returned from space, that is, the rocket landed upright on its legs. The boosters were even reused and has a total of 6 crew flights so far. Pretty cool achievement. Sadly, that’s all Blue Origin can boast of, despite the backing of its billionaire founder. United Launch Alliance has been sending payloads into orbit for decades and amassed an impressive record. While other rockets such as the Delta IV Heavy and Atlas V slowly come to an end with only a set amount of missions left, Vulcan is getting ready to take the stage. ULA has put a lot into this rocket and its success is paramount for the company. In the last couple of months, we have seen an increased amount of updates and progress as the maiden launch closes in. After arriving at the company’s launch site in the Cape earlier this month, the rocket is now being stacked. From here we can expect some exciting pre-launch testing of the two BE-4 engines and other components. If everything goes according to plan a launch in March is still very possible. This being said, recent delays have pushed this mission back further than ULA was hoping for. With so many future launches riding on this initial flight success, the company is working to make sure it’s a success.
