Bioluminescence in the deep sea is a natural phenomenon present in many deep sea creatures. Bioluminescent twinkling, flashing, pulsating lights are the result of a chemical reaction that produces light energy within the body of an organism. It is a common feature of many marine organisms - a single adaptation uniting vastly different creatures, from bacteria and algae to cephalopods and sharks. The spindle-shaped body of the firefly squid is covered in bioluminescent organs called photophores that emit a blue-green light. In the case of these shimmering cephalopods, they utilise the adaptation to attract prey such as small fish down in the gloomy mesopelagic zone. But they also demonstrate another evolutionary phenomenon. Counter-illumination, a form of camouflage in which they light up in varying intensities to match the ambient light around them. For example, they glow brighter as they ascend to shallower waters at night. The colour they emit matches the faint glow of moonlight from the surface, meaning they can blend in with their surroundings whether it is dark or light, and hide themselves from predators. In much of the open ocean there is no concealment, so animals must adapt to be able to hide in the wide open. This unique skill is helped by the fact that firefly squid are the only cephalopods to see in colour, so they are able to distinguish between the ambient light and their own bioluminescence. Firefly squid gather at the surface in large numbers from March until May during their spawning season. Here at Toyama Bay in Japan, they bathe the beaches in an eerie blue glow, lighting up particularly bright in order to attract a mate. However, not all bioluminescent creatures are able to produce their own light themselves. 00:00 - Introduction 00:41 - What is Bioluminescence? 02:01 - Bioluminescent Creatures 02:42 - Bioluminescence in the Firefly Squid 03:07 - How Counter-illumination Works 03:54 - Firefly Squid Spawning 04:13 - Symbiotic Bioluminescent Bacteria 04:25 - Bioluminescence in Anglerfish 05:22 - How Bioluminescence Works 05:58 - Bioluminescence in the Green Bomber Worm 06:12 - Why is Bioluminescence Blue? 06:49 - Bioluminescence in the Bloody-Belly Comb Jelly 07:01 - Why do Deep Sea Creatures have Large Eyes? 07:36 - Conclusion 08:02 - The Deep Sea Hub DEEP SEA HUB: 🤍 #deepsea #wildlife #ocean #vampiresquid #deepseawonders #bioluminescence #marinebiology Resources: 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 Video sources: - MBARI - OceanX - David Attenborough's Light on Earth - EVNautilus
A dive into the deep sea reveals twinkling lights in the midst of darkness. This light doesn’t come from the sun—sunlight can’t penetrate to these depths—it comes from the animals that live here. Scientists call this living light show bioluminescence—when living organisms create their own light using a chemical reaction. MBARI Senior Scientist Steve Haddock and his team are working to decipher the secret language of light in the deep sea. His team’s work has revealed that bioluminescence is actually quite common in the deep. From zooplankton to jellies, fishes, and squid, deep-sea animals have adapted to use light in a variety of ways. MBARI’s work is helping biologists understand how and why these remarkable animals produce their own light. We’ve collaborated with our education and conservation partner Monterey Bay Aquarium on the development of their newest exhibition, “Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean,” opening on April 9, 2022. The groundbreaking exhibition will offer a rare look at the animals that thrive in the least explored area of the planet and will feature an immersive experience recreating the world of deep-sea bioluminescence. Imagine kayaking through a fairyland of glowing blue-green water where fish, dolphins and manatees are illuminated beneath a starry sky. Florida's Space Coast offers ideal conditions for bioluminescent kayaking, a peculiar natural phenomenon in which tiny, marine organisms called dinoflagelletes glow, generating cold white light through an internal chemical reaction like a firefly. The organisms are too small to see, but with some 200,000 to 300,000 in a single liter of water they can cause the water to glow the color of a fluorescent blue-green glow stick. Any movement excites the organisms and causes them to alight, from a swimming fish to swaying sea grass to the movement of your hand through the water. As night falls on certain beaches around the world, the waves glow with an eerie blue light, neon dots that make it look as though stars are washing up on shore. What you’re seeing is actually millions of microscopic organisms called bioluminescent phytoplankton. Some of the most spectacular photographs have been captured from one location, Vaadhoo Island, Maldives, which has been nick named the sea of stars. The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. Grow More - Glow More - Know More PyroFarms presents the Bio-Orb, a seawater and bioluminescent plankton filled glass sphere. Glowing blue at night when swirled and powered by light absorption during the day, the all-natural Bio-Orb will produce living light, night after night. PyroFarms grows and sells bioluminescent phytoplankton, which can produce light at night and fresh oxygen during the daytime. We sell phytoplankton that we call PyroDinos. PyroDinos use sunlight to grow (like a plant) and produce a brilliant blue light at night called bioluminescence. PyroDinos also remove the greenhouse gas CO2 from your environment, getting you closer to carbon neutral. PyroDinos with the oceans' phytoplankton remove more CO2 than all land plants combined, thus making them our number one ally for fighting climate change. Best enjoyed at lower volume. 🤍ShinSawano Aequorea victoria, also sometimes called the crystal jelly, which emits blue-white fluorescent light, led to the discovery of a material that is indispensable in modern medicine. Research on the luminescent substance (GFP: Green Fluorescent Protein) of the one jellyfish has not only led to dramatic advances in molecular biology and basic medicine, but also to the development of new drugs and revolutionary treatment technologies, a discovery that has become a "revolution in observing the mechanisms of life" that is indispensable to life science. Dr. Osamu Shimomura, who was involved in this research for many years, was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. [ Aequorea victoria, also sometimes called the crystal jelly, is a bioluminescent hydrozoan jellyfish, or hydromedusa, that is found off the west coast of North America. The species is best known as the source of two proteins involved in bioluminescence, aequorin, a photoprotein, and green fluorescent protein (GFP). Their discoverers, Osamu Shimomura and colleagues, won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on GFP. The synthetic plasmid "pGLO," which is used as a gene vector to create genetically modified organisms, is generated from this species. The green fluorescent protein (GFP) causes the gonads to emit blue-white light in response to stimuli. the GFP gene was isolated in 1992 and is now widely used in biochemistry experiments as an easy-to-use fluorescent label of natural origin.] (Wikipedia） The Best Relax Screensavers! There are certain natural phenomena that most photographers would love to capture. Aurora, eclipses, meteors, rainbows, eruptions, lightning and tornados all present challenges to the photographer, not least of which is (with the exception of eclipses) having a camera pointed the right way when they happen. Bioluminescent algae is no different in this regard. Like all the most incredible natural spectacles it is hard to predict and tricky to capture. I’ve been lucky enough to witness bioluminescent algal blooms on several occasions and have had camera to hand when it has occurred. Of all the photographs I’ve taken they are easily the most popular and generate more interest (and copyright theft) than anything else I’ve ever photographed. So I thought I’d give everyone the low-down on this amazing natural occurrence, from a photography perspective, in order to answer everyone’s questions about it.

With this album, OOOD have taken everything they have learned in 27 years of writing and producing together and distilled it into 11 deeply groovy, trance-inducing tracks. "Deep Flight" is slower and deeper than their earlier albums but is still unmistakeably OOOD, with each track standing as a unique and distinctive waypoint on the progressive leg of their journey through the mostly unexplored landscape of psychedelic dance music. Every location we visit on this less-trodden path has its own identity - its own geography, language, flora and fauna. The views are vibrant and crystal clear and although each environment is different, the band's characteristic voice and perspective links them all. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts and listening to the album from start to finish is intensely rewarding, reminding us that – in life as in music - the journey is the destination.
