Inside Angola's Civil War (1999)

Land Of No Hope (1999): A moving and insightful feature on the Angolan Civil War. Subscribe to journeyman for daily uploads: 🤍 In the aftermath of a rare victory against Savimbi's UNITA forces, young rookies show off their victims. "Hey! this guy's still alive," they say "let's riddle him with bullets." But for most the bravado is wearing thin. The government has resorted to cordoning off neighbourhoods and press-ganging boys into service. Angola's provincial cities have become islands of government control. Besieged by UNITA they are the frontlines of the civil war and the end of the line for thousands of refugees. 18,000 of them crowd into Huambo, unable to leave for fear of stepping on a mine or running into UNITA.. "We ran away from UNITA because they decapitate people," explains just one of the refugees now totally dependent on the dwindling aid handouts. People run as the bombs fall in Huambo, yet there seems no urgency to their strides. After so many attacks fatalism pervades. UNITA has made the towns centres of crisis to keep the government busy while they get on with the real war of keeping their diamonds. Government ads promise an end to war. "Angola says Enough!" they trumpet. The Cold War: The Angolan Civil War - Episode 49

The Angolan Civil War was directly after the Angolan War of Independence. After the Carnation Revolution 1974, Angola had been granted its independence and had been split up into three factions: the MPLA, the FNLA and UNITA. What followed was a mass civil war, with foreign intervention, and of vital importance to the Cold War.

A Brief Explanation of Angola's Civil War | African Biographics

Hi Welcome to another episode of African Biographics, in this video we go back in history to do a brief explaination of the Angolan Civil War. The war started in 1975 when fighting between the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), led by Jose Eduardo DOS SANTOS, and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), led by Jonas SAVIMBI, followed the country’s independence from Portugal in that same year. The war quickly degenerated into a proxy war for the Cold War with the Soviet Union and Cuba supporting the MPLA while he FNLA and UNITA were supported by South Africa, Zaire, China and the United States. Peace seemed imminent in 1992 when Angola held national elections, but fighting picked up again in 1993. Up to 1.5 million lives may have been lost - and 4 million people displaced - during the more than a quarter century of fighting. In this video we look at the background of this war, the different phases during the war and what led to eventual peace in Angola. Jonas Savimbi: The Notorious Angolan Rebel Leader of Unita | African Biographics

On February 22 2002, Soldiers of the Angolan Armed Forces, assisted by Israeli surveillance experts caught up with Jonas Savimbi and killed him in the province of Moxico in central eastern Angola. Savimbi’s death marked the end of the 27 year long Angolan Civil War in which at least half a million people died in the conflict for the vast, diamond and oil-rich Southern African nation. Jonas Savimbi, who has been described as one of the most charismatic rebels on the continent, had spent more than 35 years in the bush battling first for Angolan independence and then later for personal power. Some senior officials in Ronald Regan’s administration he was touted as being “one of the most talented charismatic of leaders in modern African history.” However some people saw him as a stooge of capitalism and a plaything of the racist apartheid government. In this episode of African Biographics, we look at the life story of Jonas Savimbi, the Angolan rebel leader of UNITA. * TIMESTAMPS: INTRO: 0:00 EARLY LIFE: 01:09 JOINS POLITICS: 03:42 FORMS UNITA: 05:47 ANGOLAN INDEPENDENCE: 07:36 ANGOLAN CIVIL WAR: 08:50 CIVIL WAR HEIGHTENS: 11:50 RELATIONSHIP WITH USA: 12:42 WAR CALMS DOWN: 14:05 FIGHTING RESUMES: 15:44 DEATH AND LEGACY: 18:07 * Sources: 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 Music: Heartbreaking Kevin MacLeod ( Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License 🤍 Desert City by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. 🤍 Source: 🤍 Artist: 🤍 John Stockton Slow Drag by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. 🤍 Source: 🤍 Artist: 🤍 Feel free to reach out to us at africanbiographics🤍 #JonasSavimbi #Angola

The Only Hollywood Portrayal of the Angolan Civil War

Keyword: loosely Film: Red Scorpion Jack Abramoff wrote and co-produced the film Red Scorpion with his brother Robert in 1989. In the film, Dolph Lundgren plays Nikolai, a Soviet agent sent to assassinate an African revolutionary in a fictional country modeled on Angola. The South African government financed the film through the International Freedom Foundation, a front-group chaired by Abramoff, as part of its efforts to undermine international sympathy for the African National Congress. While working in Hollywood, Abramoff was convicted for fraud and other offenses that he had committed during his concurrent career as a lobbyist. Lundgren also starred in the 1998 film Sweepers as a demolitions expert clearing minefields in Angola. For twenty-three years, five western nations, members of the Soviet bloc and two superpowers were locked into a war never formally declared. The South African Defence Force and the CIA backed UNITA pitted against communist Angolans, SWAPO, Cubans, and Russians. It all began in 1966. Once the Draft started, every able-bodied white South African male was called up for service; they were joined by the famed 32 Battalion, composed mainly of black FNLA veterans. They were forced to adapt, both physically and emotionally. It was a call that most answered. This was the Cold War played out on a third-world battleground. Where the skies of Angola were once the most hostile airspace in the world and Rules of engagement in this war were murky, complicated and secretive and who won it, remains fiercely contested even to this day. It started in 1974 when the Portuguese abandoned their colonies presenting the Soviet Union with an unexpected opportunity. Democratic elections were promised but never held. Within months a communist régime was in power supported by 12,000 Cuban troops. Angola was the first country in Southern Africa to fall under Soviet control but a Cuban army and an arsenal of soviet weapons were needed to keep the Angolan government in power. Learn how a conspiracy to turn Angola back over to a Soviet backed regime launched a Soviet adventure in Africa. Many try to improve their lot, the violence makes it near impossible: "We make a garden, and we come to harvest, but there are always armed men to shoot us and take the food." Yet while most suffer, a lucky few are making millions from the conflict. Angola has one of Africa's largest diamond reserves, and the conflict drives profits up. Only those at the top benefit however, and the poor continue to suffer, despite their country's valuable natural resources. The Real Victims Of Angola's Civil War (1999)

Death In Kuito (1999): The town of Kuito has suffered hugely over the decades of Angola's civil war. Now surrounded by a ring of mines, the people are starving. Subscribe to Journeyman here: 🤍 The price of rice here has quadrupled. Many of Kuito's poorest citizens are now starving. Scenes in the hospital are reminiscent of medieval torture. The doctors here fled when fighting intensified. Now there are only nurses who have received crash training in the practice of amputation. Without the necessary skills and equipment, this rough and ready treatment is all Angola's thousands of mine victims can hope for. Outside of Kuito, government forces are successfully fending off UNITA attacks. In some of the first frontline footage out of Angola, we witness the full horror of the skirmishes. Soldiers here do not take prisoners of war - they only kill. By ringing Kuito with mines the rebels are held back. The legacy of their chosen weapon ensures that even if peace returns to Angola, new casualties of war will be filling the hospitals for decades.
