Portimão Visit the Portimão museum if you want to learn more about its fishing and canning tradition, or go to the medieval Fort of Santa Catarina de Ribamar for panoramic views. Serra de Monchique Apart from beautiful beaches, the Algarve is also home to a rolling mountain range. The town of Monchique lies in pristine nature, surrounded by lush green forests. What an incredible beach! The sea stacks and archways dotted throughout make it a great beach for exploring (if you like climbing over rocks through water!) Unfortunately, there had been some high tides before my visit, meaning there was quite a bit of seaweed, making swimming and walking to the sea less enjoyable. Be aware that many of the tides in the Algarve are also rough and unsuitable for young children. However, I had a pleasant afternoon on the lovely sandy beach. I would also recommend visiting by sea either through one of the boat trips or by hiring a SUP or kayak as this allows better exploration of the caves and archways. Praia da Galé forms the eastern end of the wide sandy bay of Armação de Pêra. On this beach, the rock formations characteristic of the western Algarve emerges again from the sands, providing nooks and crannies for bathers, especially in the eastern section, with the western sector being more exposed. These carbonated rocks with hot cores and very rich in marine fossils, also called concheiros, testify to a past time when the sea level was further inland. They are heavily sculpted by rainwater and polished by the sea, treated by plants adapted to the sod. In areas where sand accumulates, mainly in the plant sector, you can still observe the dune plants, the sand clove, and the aromatic evergreen in the continuity of the Salgados dune system and the aromatic Praia Grande. The crystal clear, shallow waters and silky soft golden sand make Praia de São Rafael one of the most popular beaches in the Albufeira area. The beach is just far from the resort town to not be overrun but close enough to be within easy reach (2 km, to be precise). Set in a pretty bay flanked by tall ochre-colored limestone cliffs, São Rafael is reminiscent of many beaches along this stretch of the Algarve coast. The beach is home to an array of incredible rock formations carved by the wind and waves over the millennia. Some of these rocks have evocative names, such as "Ninho das Andorinhas" (the Swallow’s Nest) and "Ponte Pequena" (the Small Bridge). There are also several caves and caverns to explore here. If exploring is your thing, this is perfect snorkeling territory - as good as it gets on the Algarve. There are also various organized excursions by kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore the neighboring coves and coast. At lower tides, there is a second little cove you can walk to from São Rafael, which offers a little more seclusion than the main beach. As a Blue Flag beach, there are plenty of amenities, including toilets and public showers. There is also a lifeguard service on the beach during the summer months. The beach has good disabled access with boardwalks and paved slopes down to the beach from the central car park above the beach. The Algarve Portugal is one of the top destinations for vacationers and holiday travelers throughout Europe. After spending two days exploring the towns and beaches of the beautiful eastern Algarve, we can definitely see why! Join us in the video where we take you to the towns of Monte Gordo, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, and Ayamonte, Spain! On our second day visiting, we decided to rent bikes in Monte Gordo - a must-do if visiting! After spending time exploring the beautiful beach resort town of Monte Gordo, we rode through a pine forest, with great walking and biking trails. Down this trail, not far from the crowded beaches we end up at one of the most amazing white sandy beaches! Back on our bikes, we follow the trail to the wonderful town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio. this town is a popular town for retirees and less touristy than some others but ranks as one of our favorites in this area! A quick foot ferry ride across the river and you'll find yourself in Spain, in the small town of Ayamonte. When first arriving on the ferry it didn't appear there would be much to see here. But we didn't have to walk far to find ourselves surrounded by beautiful architecture, great restaurants, and plenty of shopping. The town square is a must-see and a great view to grab a sangria and some tapas. We were surprised just how much we loved this town, and sure hope to return. Located just outside of Lagoa in the Algarve, Carvalho is tucked into the scenic coves in a row of beaches that also includes Albandeira, Benagil and Marinha - all fantastic beach trips on their own accords. This is a return trip, as we've visited a few times before this summer, but Julia has just returned from a vacation to Bali, so some Portuguese sun-bathing and cliff jumping was in store.
