The Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains, are located in the north of Albania and occupy about 8% of the country’s territory. Home to dramatic mountain peaks, deep green valleys, and thick forests, this is the finest hiking area in Albania. It’s the most attractive and fascinating part of the country in our opinion, but also relatively isolated since there are only a couple of roads in and out. In fact, there is no road connecting the two most famous parks: Valbona and Theth, and you have to hike over a mountain pass to get from one to another. 📍 DAY 1: Shkodra - Komani Lake - Valbona Valley National Park ☑️ Take shuttle from Shkodra to Koman, take the ferry to Fierze, take the shuttle to Valbona Valley National Park, do a short hike to Kukaj Valley (and the Ridge near Thatë peak) or just relax at the guesthouse 🚢 Reserve your spot on the ferry: 🤍 😴 Where we stayed in Valbona: Guesthouse Skender Selimaj 🤍 📍 DAY 2: Hike in Valbona Valley National Park ☑️ Hike to the Montenegrin-Albanian border pyramid (17.5 kms/11 mi long with 1,280 meters/4,200 ft of elevation gain). From the pass, you can also continue to Rosi peak, which adds another 400 meters/1,300ft of elevation. Alternative trails include Jezerca Lakes and peak, Thatë peak, and Kolata peak. 📍 DAY 3: Hike the famous Valbona to Theth Trail ☑️ This point-to-point hike is about 17 kms or 10.5 miles long, depending on where you start and finish it. We would say the difficulty level is medium, and you don't need to be fit or have a lot of mountain experience to complete the trek. Just make sure you can walk for 6 to 9 hours! 😴 Where we stayed in Theth: Where we stayed: Bujtina Miqesia 🤍 📍 DAY 4 (& 5): Hike in Theth National Park + Bus Back To Shkodra ☑️ If you’re catching the bus back on DAY 4, you can do a half-day hike to the iconic Theth Church, Grunas Waterfall, and the Blue Eye. If you plan to hike all the way to the Blue Eye, keep in mind that it’s 17 kms or 10.5 miles total. Alternatively, you can hike to the Church and Grunas Waterfall only, which is a lot shorter and you’ll only need about 3-hours. If you want to spend a full day in Theth instead (and take the bus back on DAY 5), we don’t recommend hiking this extremely crowded trail! Instead, opt for a more rewarding trek to one of the peaks, caves, or glacial lakes. Find other trail options in the tourist center in town. 📺 MORE ALBANIA VIDEOS: - Tirana Things To Do: 🤍 - Saranda Things To Do: 🤍 - Gjirokaster Things To Do: 🤍 - Albania Top 15 Places To Visit: 🤍 - Berat Things To Do: 🤍 ✍️ GET TRAVEL PLANNER AT 50% OFF: 🤍 💰 SAVE MONEY ON YOUR TRIP: - Book cheap flights: 🤍 - Book cheap accommodations: 🤍 - Book cheap rental cars: 🤍 ⬇️ FREE DOWNLOAD: 100 Bucket List Destinations In The World: 🤍 ✅ SUBSCRIBE: 🤍 😊 FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: 🤍 ✏️ ALBANIAN ALPS GUIDE (WITH HIKING MAPS): 🤍 🎵 MUSIC CREDITS: Hope and Glory by Nobo Rejoice in the morning by The David Roy Collective Rainbow by Vaeceslav Draganov Life by ANBR Local Albanian Music by Theth Musician 🎥 VIDEO CHAPTERS: 0:00 Intro 1:16 DAY 1 Shkodra and Komani and Valbona 3:23 DAY 2 Hike Valbona Valley National Park 5:15 DAY 3 Hike Valbona to Theth Trail 6:43 DAY 4 OR 5 Hike in Theth and Bus Back To Shkodra 8:24 More Albanian Alps Tips #thethnationalpark #valbonavalleynationalpark #albania

🌎 TRAVEL ALBANIAN ALPS: 🤍 🇦🇱 DAVID’S BEEN HERE ALBANIA SHIRTS: 🤍 On the morning of my fifth day in Albania, I hit the ground running with a road trip from Shkodër to the town of Theth in the Albanian Alps! Come along with me as I travel to the Albanian Alps for the first time and share my first impressions of Theth, Albania! 🧳 BALKAN PEARLS TOUR OPERATOR: 🤍 🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA: 🤍 My day began in Shkodër at 6:30 in the morning. We’d be driving three hours into the Albanian Alps to Theth, one of the most beautiful areas in the country. I couldn’t wait to get there. As we passed through Shkodër, we passed by a neverending bazaar where they sold lots of fruits and vegetables. First, we stopped at Byreke Pica for some byrek, but they weren’t ready yet. So we went on the hunt for some elsewhere! There were so many bicyclists in Shkodër. Then, we found some byrek at Peta Byreku. We bought eight and took them with us on the road. I was told the views in the mountains are beautiful. It would be about 90 minutes before we reached the entrance to the mountains. The road we were following becomes a rocky road once you reach the mountains, so you need to drive a 4x4 there. We passed lots of farmlands and businesses along the road, which also leads to Montenegro. Along the way, I dug into my byrek, which was super hot and full of cheese! The road condensed down to one lane as it headed up int the mountains. The road winds through the mountains. Theth wasn’t inhabited thousands of years ago. When the Ottomans arrived in Albania, people from Shkodër fled into the mountains to hide. After Communism fell in 1991, they returned back to Shkodër, abandoning their houses and lands. When tourism kicked up, they returned to Theth to open guest houses in the mountains! We make a stop and met some men drinking rakija and water. The mountain scenery was gorgeous. It reminded me of Switzerland! There, I enjoyed another of our cheese byrek. It was cheesy and flaky and golden brown. Then, I had some plum rakija and a strong espresso. The rakija was strong and really good. I had fallen in love with them! I liked the plum rakija more than the grape—the grape is too strong! Then, we continued our road trip into the Albanian Alps! We drove past some cows and reached the dirt road leading further into the national park. There was a little wooden balcony where we could enjoy a breathtaking view of the mountains. It reminded me of Montenegro and Bosnia. It was very green and full of peaks! From there, we continued on. The road got worse as we went. I learned that snow sometimes completely blocks this road in the winter! There’s a famous cross along the way near an amazing viewpoint. The cross has been there for at least 200 years! From the viewpoint, you can see Theth nestled in the valley below. We were on a peak in the middle of the valley with mountains all around us! Within the next year, the road should be paved, which will help cut down the travel time to get there since the roads will be smoother. Then, we stopped at a spot where water trickles down from the mountains. The water comes out a spout shaped like and hand and is ice-cold! There are about 100 guesthouses in the area along this road. They range in size and variety. Theth National Park is the largest national park in the country. I couldn’t wait to have lunch and explore the area for the next five hours! But you’ll see that in the next video! Where have you been? ALBANIA is beautiful!. The diversity, the scenery, the people, we are surprised that Albania is still so undiscoverd. We start off with one of the most beautiful hikes I have done in my life. The hike starts in Lëpushë and you will hike in 2,5 hours to one off the most amazing mountain peaks you have ever seen. The viewpoint from Maja e Vajushes is truly one of the best I have ever seen and we have been hiking in the European Alps a lot. In summer this hike is actually marked as easy, but in spring it can still be tricky. Especially when you go off track like us. One minute we where the happiest people alive and the next we were nervous little human beings that could not find a way down. With the sun starting to set we were getting nervous. In the end we found a really steep way down and couldn’t be more happy to be back in our van. Lesson here: don’t go off track. Especially when there is a lot of snow and it is already getting dark. Lesson learned! We continu our roadtrip to the Koman Lake. Nobody really knows, but you can do some beautiful hiking here. Also returning from your hike and being able to jump into the Koman Lake is amazing. We cannot make a Hiking in Albania video without going to Valbona (Valbonë). So that’s what we did of course. Valbona Valley is known for it’s spectaculair scenery with peaks as sharp as knives. You can do a lot of hiking here and if you want you can easily spent a couple of weeks. But the one hike you should at least try to do is the hike to Theth! Unfortunately we were not able to go, because of the snow. But we did do another hike and this must have been just as beautiful, because the views were spectaculair! Our Van Life Roadtrip in Albania has come to end. We will be heading to Montenegro and yes we will be doing a lot of hikes there aswell. Can’t wait! THE BEST HIKE IN EUROPE - in my opinion! Everyone had told me how beautiful the Albanian Alps were but I was so excited to tick it off my bucket list and complete the popular hike from Valbone to Theth! I was stupid enough to hike in my sandals but successfully completed it even with 2 beers in my system! Whilst in Theth we partied, ate, and enjoyed the views and also headed out to the incredible blue eye. The water was freezing but we still jumped in and had a great time! The hilltop coastal camp spot we had found at the end of the last episode provided a good mix of Albania. Communist ruins, and beautiful clear water. We woke to a perfect day with the sun glistening off the crystal waters, fisherman in small boats were casting their nets, and a herd of noisy goats scrabbled up the crest in front of us and off into the shrub. While making our morning coffee a local shepherd moving his flock stops by to say hello. He couldn’t speak any English though a friendly smile was enough of a welcome gesture. Very intrigued by the Troopy we gave him a little tour, and in return he offered a ride on his donkey. We’ve found it interesting in countries where shepherds are still widely used that they usually always insist we go for a ride on their horses, or donkey in this case, as if it’s something they’re very proud of. Not wanting to offend Jolie jumped on, still in her PJs, for a little guided ride. Google translate is indispensable in situations like this where communication would otherwise be limited to hand gestures. Thankfully with technology we were able to have a basic conversation and learn a bit about the 62yr old shepherd, his family, how his kids had left home to study, how he moves his flock each day, and a bit of history about the various artillery ruins surrounding the camp spot. After a coffee and some biscuits, some for donkey too, he seemed to blissfully forget about his flock as they meandered off into the bush. 45 minutes went by before he trotted off, rounding up his sheep and headed off down the track. We packed down the Troopy, crawled back up the rutted track in, and headed inland again towards the mountains of the North. As we near the town of Shkoda we notice a noise coming from the rear of the Troopy, an unfortunately familiar noise. A quick search of mechanics on iOverlander shows a mechanic conveniently nearby so we put it in the GPS and make a beeline. During our travels through Asia we’ve loved the ability to not only have access to extremely cost effective mechanics though also be to be able to arrive and start work almost immediately. We’re not sure if this is because they feel obliged because we’re Westerners, or they actually charge us more than normal (still incredibly cheap), or that’s just how they operate. Regardless of what it is, it’s a huge benefit for us from a time perspective. This mechanic was no different, and minutes after arriving they had the rear wheels off confirming our suspicion that the brake pads had gone again. This big fat overweight Troopy needs a diet as it has chewed down a few brake pads over the years! Although the ability to get into these mechanics is convenient it would be in vein if we didn’t carry the right spares. We luckily caught this at the right time too as it had caused a minor score on the disc. Not a problem though, they whisked the disk off to a machine shop and had it back machined and smooth about half an our later. The friendly guys who run the shop gave the underside a quick once over while they waited for the disc to return, greasing everything as they went. With everything back together the day was late and we weren’t going to reach our planned destination. Adjacent the city is a huge lake which also makes up the border with Montenegro. Using our Google Maps technique we found a few potential camp spots by the lake to the north which looked promising. As we drove out of the city in the warm autumn afternoon light towards the lake we were surprised at how many people were cycling, with almost as many people on bikes in some parts as there was vehicles. Maybe this is a carry over tradition from communist days, the demographic, or simply enjoy being healthy, either way with most people casually riding in pairs it set a relaxing tone to the afternoon. 🏨 GUESTHOUSE KOLGJONI: 🤍 🌎 TRAVEL MEDIA EU: 🤍 🇦🇱 DAVID’S BEEN HERE ALBANIA SHIRTS: 🤍 As my second full day back in Albania continued, I ventured even further north to the town of Valbonë! Join me as I enjoy some amazing raki in the Albanian Alps and visit attractions in Valbonë! 🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA: 🤍 My adventure began with my boy Erjan from Travel Media EU in beautiful Valbonë. It’s located in the heart of the Albanian Alps in the northern part of the country, close to the border with Montenegro. On the other side of the mountain is Theth, an alpine village I visited two months earlier. The hike from Theth to Valbonë is eight hours! This area is popular for hiking and seeing the lake. The Valbonë River is gorgeous, and since it was becoming winter, it was more swollen than usual. Across a bridge, we saw some stone houses, which were built a few hundred years ago. One of them is used as a corn mill! We hiked around the river. The water is super fresh and the air quality is incredible. From there, we hopped back in the car and drove to the lake. We were getting close to sunset. We hopped back out and set out on a 15-minute hike past huge stones. And lots of trees. The path there is marked by red markers on the stones. The path was a little slippery from rain or snow, but overall, it was easy to navigate. It’s a beginners’ hike, so anyone can do it, even children. About 220 meters from the main road are the crystal blue waters of Xhemes’ Lake. It’s a small, natural lake framed by the mountains and is so beautiful! It’s surrounded by stones and is so peaceful! Then, Erjan found a large mushroom. I’d never seen one that big! It smelled amazing. Valbonë is famous for relaxation and has lots of guesthouses. The town is similar to Theth, with massive peaks everywhere. We stopped at a small local souvenir shop, which sells high-quality mountain tea, traditional handmade goods (scarves, socks, hats), and local honey. No one was at the stand, so I took a few things and left the money there. Then, we headed to Guesthouse Kolgjoni! We had to cross the bedrock of the river to get there. If the river is flowing, you have to cross by boat. The guesthouse is made up of stone and wooden housing. There are two dining areas, a place where you can make a fire, and the Stone House Hotel. There, we met Kola and Bledar, who showed us the rooms. There are 11 rooms and 10 bathrooms in total. I loved the stonework! The building was built in 1960 and was restored four years ago. The biggest room is at the top. There are four beds in that room and cabinets. There’s also an incredible view from the balcony. Then, we went to see how they make some plum raki! It was good but very strong! I thought it would be weaker than grape raki! I saw where they ferment the plums for up to three week and then got to see the entire raki-making process! In the kitchen, they were making cheese, potatoes with cheese, a pie with noodles and cheese called pasticho, stuffed peppers with cream, cabbage salad, beef, yogurt, and more! The dining room was warm and cozy. I couldn’t wait to eat some dairy! The pasticho was like a cheesy lasagna. I also loved the crunchy cabbage and cheesy potatoes. The beef was nice and fatty, and the creamy peppers were like peppers with sour cream. The crumbly cheese was also fantastic! Everything was farm-to-table and so good! Where have you been? Come along with me as I try some Albanian Alps food and explore an ice-cold waterfall and mountain attractions in Theth, Albania! 🧳 BALKAN PEARLS TOUR OPERATOR: 🤍 🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA: 🤍 My morning in Theth National Park (Parku Kombëtar i Thethit) with my friends at Travel Albanian Alps was off to an amazing start. First, I met up with my friend Andy from Travel Albania Alps at Logu i Harushave, our guesthouse in Theth. I tried some rakija and then we set out to explore the area. Along the way, we passed by the Kisha e Thethit, or the Church of Theth, which dates back to 1892! Then, it was time to hike along a rocky path to the waterfall. I suggest wearing hiking boots, but my sneakers held up fine. Then, we crossed a bridge with some missing planks. You have to be careful crossing it! On the other side of the bridge is an old house with lots of branches piled up outside. Nearby was a map of the park. I drank some water from a stream and continued down the path. We passed a cow and a tiny waterfall and climbed some boulders to get our first glimpse of Waterfall Theth. The waterfall was gorgeous! I took off my shoes to wade into the pool below the falls. The water was frigid! It was so icy! I had to stand on a rock after 20 seconds because my feet were freezing! My feet were numb afterward! Then, we headed back to town. The hike was a bit tougher because of the rocks and the steepness of parts of the trail. We passed some tourists on the way and only took 20 minutes to get back. Then, we stopped at a wooden bar with an amazing view of the mountains and valley. Their rakija was light and smooth! Next, we visited Lock-In Tower, the defense tower of Theth. It was built on a huge boulder, so the floor is rock. Upstairs, we met a man who played a traditional instrument for us! On the third level is more carpet, a small chest, and tiny windows where archers would fire at invaders. There was also an old rifle! The tower dates back over 400 years! Then, we headed back to the guesthouse for lunch. We had a tomato-and-cucumber salad, fried potatoes, goat cheese, homemade yogurt, grilled vegetables, cheese-spinach-and-onion byrek, baked potatoes, and local beef. I also had some rakija! The cheese and potatoes were amazing. The beef was delicious and gelatinous and went well with the yogurt, and the cigar-shaped byrek was hot and fresh! The roasted red pepper and eggplant was also outstanding. It was the best beef I’ve had in Albania! The byrek was also the best I’d had so far! It was crispy and the combination of cheese, onion, and spinach was next-level! The guesthouse’s cottages have mirrored windows so you can’t see inside, but people inside can see outside. The cottages are all wood and have a king-sized bed and a spot to hang your clothes. There’s only a glass wall separating the room from the bathroom, so you can see into it! It was incredible. It was like a nice mountain cabin! I loved the guesthouse. I also saw one of their rooms, which has a king-sized bed and a twin bed. Further upstairs were more rooms with two twin-sized beds and a king-sized bed. The bathrooms were all really clean and nice. But the best part about the guesthouse was the amazing view of Theth and the sound of the mountain wilderness! Where have you been? The Valbona to Theth hike in Northern Albania is the ultimate hiking adventure. The ferry ride crossing Lake Koman is one of the most spectacular in the world. The quaint villages of Valbona and Theth would leave you pinching yourself just to check that you're not dreaming. The actual hike is incredibly beautiful which made me wonder why I haven't heard of this place before. I did this hike in May 2022 so there's still plenty of snow on the mountain, which made the hike a little too dangerous for my liking, if I'm honest. But you know, you gotta live a little :) If you're fan of outdoor activities and hiking in particular, this should be on your list. If not, I hope this video convinces you to visit Albania and do this hike as well. Albania may have a dark past, but it will be one of the most popular hiking and adventure travel destinations in the coming years, so go now before it gets too busy! Freezing to death in the Albanian alps is not how I envisioned on leaving this world! This was one hell of a journey. Not one I would have ever taken if I knew what was ahead of me. If you're thinking of visiting the amazing village of Theth while you're in Albania, MAKE SURE YOU GO IN THE SUMMER! Do not make the same mistake I did lol. Backpacking in the Albanian Alps. We started in Shkoder, then took a van to the ferry at Lake Koman. We crossed Lake Koman to Fierza, where we took another van to Valbona. From Valbona, we hiked ten miles to the Theth Valley, and shuttled back to Shkoder. My companions from Denmark, Australia, England, and French Canada were all so wonderful. It was a beautiful and remarkable journey. I created this short video for OAF Nation's travel section, OAF Scout. Check them out at 🤍oafnation.com
