After being encircled by Ukrainian forces, Russia has pulled its troops out of the strategic eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman – the latest victory for Kyiv’s counteroffensive. The announcement on Saturday came a day after President Vladimir Putin proclaimed the annexation of four Ukrainian regions – including Donetsk, where Lyman is located – and placed them under Russia’s nuclear umbrella, at a ceremony condemned by Kyiv and the West as an “illegitimate farce”. Ukraine’s defence ministry wrote on Twitter that “almost all” the Russian troops in Lyman had either been captured or killed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said in a video address that although the Ukrainian flag was flying in the city, “fighting is still going on there”. “There are four new regions of Russia,” President Vladimir Putin says in a lengthy speech declaring the annexation of Ukrainian lands at a Kremlin ceremony. Putin says the residents in the four annexed regions will now be Russia’s “citizens forever”. The Russian president also argued it was the “integral right” of people in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia to join Russia, citing the United Nations charter and its affirmation of the right to self-determination. Russia’s Duma, the lower house of parliament, has unanimously approved the annexation of four regions in Ukraine. In a plenary session on Monday, the Duma said Russia’s Federation Council, the upper house, is expected to formalise the annexation on Tuesday with final votes. Putin had, on Friday, announced Russia’s annexation of a swathe of Ukraine, promising Moscow would triumph in its “special military operation”. A new law now formally incorporates Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions into the Russian federation. Russian-controlled areas within these regions held referendums just over a week ago - Moscow says people voted overwhelmingly to join Russia. Ukraine’s president says his country is submitting an “accelerated” application to join the NATO transatlantic military alliance. Kyiv’s move follows Moscow’s formal annexation of four partly occupied regions. “We are taking our decisive step by signing Ukraine’s application for accelerated accession to NATO,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post issued in the wake of Russia’s annexation announcement. Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit uncovers the true story behind the “crisis of anti-Semitism” that engulfed the British Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn. It made him appear unfit to govern and led to a crushing electoral defeat. An analysis of internal party documents, social media data and covert recordings reveals how senior Labour officials used the party’s procedures to undermine support for Jeremy Corbyn and to silence debate about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The files also show how pro-Israel groups ask the party to distance itself from the Boycott Divest and Sanctions campaign, a protest movement that seeks to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, and how - in response - the Jewish Board of Deputies was assured that Labour would “never accept attempts to exceptionalise and deligitimise Israel.” Subscribe to our channel 🤍 Follow us on Twitter 🤍 Find us on Facebook 🤍 Check our website: 🤍 🤍AljazeeraEnglish #aljazeeraenglish #aljazeerainvestigations #News

A state of emergency has been declared in Burkina Faso, a day after the country's second military coup in eight months. The ousted President Paul-Henri Damiba - who was ousted last night by a faction of the military - has called on the country's self-appointed leader to avoid a 'fratricidal war'. He also denied a claim by the coup leader that he has taken refuge in a French army camp. Protesters have gathered at the French Embassy in the capital, which was set on fire.
