Aeroponic Farming Is The Way Of The FUTURE... But What Does It MEAN!? Welcome back to Down on the Farm, today on the channel we are going to check out why Aeroponic Farming Is the Agricultural Wave of the Future. Derived from the Greek word for air, aeroponic farming is similar in many ways to other soilless growing techniques like hydroponics. Yet, while this method still relies on a nutrient-rich delivery system, aeroponics is unique for its ability to grow faster, more plentifully, and using less water than many other growing methods. But what makes aeroponics so special, in the first place? And how does it actually work? What is aeroponic farming? In short, aeroponic farming is the growing of fruits and vegetables without necessitating the need for soil. According to Living Greens Farm, aeroponic farming was first developed for academic purposes in the 1920s. Without soil, students were able to properly examine root growth in real-time. Meanwhile, NASA saw the potential in this new growing method, and by the late '90s, NASA had begun using it as a way for growing food in space — a locale that is notoriously bereft of soil. Not many advances have been made since those days, mind you, but as we continue to degrade the huge swaths of previously fertile soil and attempt to feed the world’s 8 billion people, aeroponic farming is beginning to get a bit more attention. How does aeroponic farming work? Aeroponic farming works by delivering nutrients to plants not via soil but via a nutrient-rich mist, distributed to the roots via a pre-programmed mister. Instead of using a growing medium, as you would within a hydroponic setup, roots grown in aeroponic systems are left floating in midair. According to Modern Farmer, however, the seeds for plants grown in aeroponic systems still need to germinate and sprout in a growing medium before being transferred. Modern farming method is growing potatoes using aeroponics. Aeroponic growing is a soilless method where plants are grown, supported at the top, with their roots hanging into a box. A solution of nutrients mixed in water is periodically pumped into the box and misted onto the hanging roots. The roots stay hydrated and absorb their nutrients without having to stay suspended in soil or water. Learn the advantages and disadvantages of aeroponics and hydroponics. I'm going to take you through each technology, what it is, and how you can use it to create self-sustaining gardens and farms that produce huge yields. Hi, I’m Jessica with Two Way Mirrors! I just created a new website AeroponicsVsHydroponics.com with all my top tips about self-sustaining farming. Whether you’re wanting to start a soil-free garden, looking to save the environment or simply just want to have the ability to grow any fruit or vegetable in any season, you’re probably looking into Aeroponics and Hydroponics. Self-sustaining farming is an incredibly important way to ensure survival in an emergency situation such as a pandemic, war, or disaster, to ensure your family has enough to eat. With the right techniques, it can even feed communities, reducing reliance on government substidized farms and factories. It's also a great way to bring farming techniques to otherwise barren parts of the world, such as deserts, rainforests, and arctic climates. It can reduce deforestation by reducing demand on local farmers to produce crops and clear large swaths of forests. What exactly is an Aeroponic garden? Aeroponic Garden An Aeroponic garden is a revolutionary system that allows plants to grow in the air, without any soil while being suspended inside of an enclosed environment. Spraying their roots with nutrient-rich water solution allows them to grow strong and healthy. Typically, pressure pumps are used to gently mist your plants roots with the water solution. What’s a Hydroponic garden system? Hydroponic Garden A Hydroponic system is where the plants are in a growing tray that has a nutrient-rich water solution flowing through the bottom of the tray area providing food and nutrients to promote the growth of your plants. The cost of the systems? When first starting out, the cost of the system can be a huge factor in choosing which system to utilize for some people. Aeroponic systems can have a much higher initial start up cost compared to the Hydroponic systems. This is partially because Aeroponic systems depend on machinery to keep the plants alive and healthy. A display of multiple plants growing in an Aeroponics setup Aeroponic systems consist of machinery such as high pressure pumps, automatic mist nozzles, and a timer. With this system, your plants are susceptible to power outages and require an expensive backup generator. The plants in this system need to be in an enclosed environment because the plants are enclosed in a dark environment, they turn the carbon dioxide into oxygen. This process is called photosynthesis. However, low energy lamps should be used to help supplement photosynthesis. If the machinery fails and the plants go without the needed nutrients, the plants in an Aeroponic system will fail to survive within just a few hours post malfunction. It’s this fact that causes the Aeroponic system to have a more substantial cost than Hydroponics when first starting out. When starting your Aeroponic system, you are going to want to make sure that you have a backup solution that is ready to use, just in case your machinery fails. This is a necessary precautionary measure that’s needed to ensure you do not lose all of your plants within just a few hours. Hydroponic Growing Setup In a Hydroponic system, the plants are positioned in a growing tray to keep them stable and in place while water flows through the bottom of the tray, delivering the needed nutrients that the plants need to survive. In conclusion, what you’re trying to achieve will decipher which method is best for you. If you have limited funds and want to keep the cost as low as you can, then Hydroponic takes the win. 🔗 WEBSITE 🔗 Learn all about transparent mirrors on our website: 🤍 Questions? True high-pressure aeroponics fundamentals. The basics. In an aeroponic system the plant's root-zone is suspended into an environment where the roots protrude into an atomized nutrient solution; the leaves and crown, often called the "canopy", extending above. The roots of the plant are separated by the plant support structure. The lowest stem and root system are sprayed or misted for short durations with a hydro-atomized pure water/nutrient solution. Self-sustaining farm for Wisconsin cold via backyard aeroponics

Benjamin Staffeldt grew up on a farm and works in a garden center so when he and his wife Sara moved into a rental home (a duplex), it was only natural he'd want to start farming his (shared) backyard. They began with containers and then bought a kit greenhouse to extend the growing season and were selling to local supermarkets and restaurants, but the heating bills to farm during Wisconsin winters (with temperatures as low as -70°F) was cutting sharply into their profits. They knew they had to maximize greenhouse space so they decided to grow vertical and to grow differently. They experimented with hydroponics and finally settled on aeroponics. "So aeroponics is similar to hydroponics using water rather than soil, but it's mist," explains Benjamin. "It's a mist that comes on inside the growing chamber, and it comes on every 3 minutes for 10 seconds, it's a really high oxygen water that's hitting that root. The method was actually developed and is being used by NASA because it uses so much less water and the speed of growth is much faster." To fully customize the growing experience, they added a thermal wrap to their aeroponics towers which helps refract light to help keep the temperature stable within the grow chambers. They're now growing enough in their 10' by 12' greenhouse for farming to be Sara's full-time job. They're hoping to commercialize their hybrid system- what they call Art Garden. It's geared toward those looking to grow in a cold climate and in a small space (one unit fits into 4 square feet). This is all part of an increasingly customized growing world that Ben hopes might make farmers out of more of us. Art Garden: 🤍 On *faircompanies: 🤍

Growing plants with sound - how LettUs Grow use ultrasonics in aeroponic growing systems

Aeroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. Instead, roots are suspended in the air and irrigated with a nutrient-dense mist. Aeroponics more commonly uses nozzles to generate mist. However, technical complexities and issues with maintenance have prevented aeroponics being successful in larger scale agricultural applications such as greenhouses. At LettUs Grow, ultrasonic technology is harnessed to create high-frequency sound waves that shake water, until it disperses into lots of tiny droplets, like a mist. This removes the need for nozzles, therefore increasing the viability of using aeroponics in much larger, commercial growing spaces, where its impact is maximized. 15-year-old Erik Meike and Briana Das, along with their 12-year-old sisters Elise and Leona, wanted to create a “No-Touch Garden”. Calling themselves “Tribe Awesome” they started tinkering with hydroponics systems. Then they discovered aeroponics, garden tech tested by NASA on the space shuttle, and after “hours and hours” of research they created an aeroponics-in-a-bucket kit that any teen could learn to make. Aeroponics, like hydroponics, doesn’t use soil, but unlike hydroponics which floods the system with water every few minutes, aeroponics uses a fogger to mist the roots. The Tribe Awesome teens use an ultrasonic fogger (purchased for about $25 online) to deliver what they consider the exact micron-sized droplets for their plants’ roots. Combine the fogger with a $5 bucket, a bit of foam, water and some seedlings, and Tribe Awesome has what they consider future garden tech. tribeawesome.com Original story: 🤍

Air compressor with regulator Solenoid valve Arduino (micro controller) Relay (for connecting the solenoid to the arduino) Aeroscience nozzles 10 microns Steel mesh filter Grow light Nutrients Wifi plugs to program the light and my drainage system On a small scale this setup isn't too convenient because of the noise. I found a pretty quiet compressor, but I still hear it if I listen in even though its in the garage. It's not soo loud, but it goes off every 15 minutes or so and is a bit annoying. I've since moved into soil. The reason that I'm showing this setup is because the NASA scientists used a smaller droplet, and this is the way that they did it. On a larger scale the setup begins to make more sense, because you can get a nice compressor with a 1000 gallon tank and charge it once a day or something. Anyways, best of luck to you all.
