Component Tester (V-I Curve Tracer) Using The Oscilloscope XY Mode In this video, I've talked about the XY mode/feature of a Siglent SDS1104X-E oscilloscope and used it in a combination with a Siglent SDG1025 waveform generator to show how you can build an interesting component tester (V-I curve tracer) to test silicone diodes, Zener Diodes, Schottky diodes, LEDs, Resistors, transistors, capacitors .. etc. Also, you can use it to learn about the behavior of the components and semiconductors. You only need to follow a very simple circuit (schematic) and hock the probes to the correct circuit points. In the video, I have tested these components: 330-ohm resistor, 1N4007 diode, 1N4148 diode, 1N5819 Schottky diode, a white LED and a green LED. the memory depth of the oscilloscope was set on 7M. This video compares the difference in performance of the XY mode of analog CRT based oscilloscopes vs. digital scopes. Another "Back to Basics" video: This video takes a fairly detailed look at the basics of Lissajous patterns on an oscilloscope. There are a LOT of videos that show Lissajous patterns on YouTube, but not too many that describe the mechanism behind these patterns. Several of my YouTube viewers have asked for this topic, so here we are. Some low-speed waveforms are used so that the trace movement that draws the Lissajous figures can be seen and understood.

The XY mode of an oscilloscope is used for observing the phase or shape conditions between two signals. To the oscilloscope two signals are being feed from any external source and can be done the observation. In XY mode, there is no time domain it’s just measuring the amplitudes and frequencies of signals. For channel1 the x-axis and for channel2 the y-axis are allocated in the oscilloscope. The combined structure of the resulting signal on the screen is called “Lissajous Figure”. It’s very important while analysing network and amplifier circuits signals helping to see the the difference between input and output signals. Please pardon me for my broken English!!!! This video shows a simple project that uses an Arduino to draw simple pictures on an oscilloscope screen using XY mode. The "real" work was done by my friend John. He created a simple program/sketch for a microcontroller to draw a Christmas tree on a scope using XY mode. Here is a link to John's blog post that describes his work, and includes links to the code: 🤍 I simply took his code and modified it to draw out my call sign. I shortened up the time constants of the RF filters on the PWM outputs (8.2K and 0.047uf vs. 10K and 0.1uF) because I had more points to draw and shortened the delay used in the loop to give a decent tradeoff between flicker and distortion.

In the end, I changed the original pinch roller to no avail even though it looked good on closer inspection. This method seems to be really accurate to use and the slightest error can be seen.
I’ve been kind of obsessed with oscilloscope music/drawing this past week. And kind of sad due to the fact that the cool analog ones that were being sold in my area were super over-priced or in terrible shape. That’s why I decided to build one in TouchDesigner (and I was able to include the so precious XY mode!) What you’re hearing in the first video is a segment of Jerobeam Fenderson’s “Planets”, track part of his amazing album “Oscilloscope Music”. And all the visuals you’re seeing are being generated by just using said track as an input for the oscilloscope build in TD in XY mode. (Yes, Jerobeam is awesome) There’s still some room for improvement, but I’m quite happy with the “analog vibe” I managed to give the whole thing. I recently installed firmware version 1.3.26 on my Siglent SDS1202X-E oscilloscope. I notice a remarkable increase in speed in the XY-mode display. I did not make any measurements, but I thought it’d be nice to share my experience. I am very happy with Siglent updating the firmware of this oscilloscope regularly.

But, obviously, this is not the normal operational mode of an oscilloscope. It’s a special mode, called “XY mode” also known as a Lissajous plot.
