This year marks the 50th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s ice-breaking trip to China followed by the signing of the Shanghai Communique. 50 years on, the bilateral relationship is fraught with tensions. The recent breathtaking development in Ukraine is making the strategic competition even more complex with profound implications for the international order. In this extraordinary time, how can we order the future of great power relations into perspective? How will the US-China relations move forward in the context of important political events in both countries? While we look back in history, is “re-icebreaking” between the world’s two largest economies possible in the future? On March 3rd, CCG hosted another episode of Global Dialogue in partnership with the China Conference of Harvard Kennedy School, featuring Dr. Wang Huiyao, founder and president of CCG, and Dr. Graham Allison, the founding dean of Harvard Kennedy School, best known in China for his notion of “Thucydides Trap” in public debates about US-China competition. 欢迎订阅我们的频道,并关注我们其他线上平台 To watch more videos, please subscribe to our YouTube channel and follow us in the following platforms: 官网 (中文):🤍 Official Website (English):🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍CCG_org LinkedIn: 🤍

Huiyao Wang: US-China trade war 'unprecedented' and 'alarming' | Talk To Al Jazeera

28.12.2019

In early 2018, a US-China trade war broke out with the two countries eventually imposing tariffs worth billions of dollars on each others' imports. As tensions between the world's two biggest economies continue, analysts warn of potential harm to the global economy. The IMF predicts that US-China trade tensions will have reduced global GDP by 0.8 percent by the beginning of next year, contributing to slowed global economic growth, which stands at 3 percent for 2019. Huiyao Wang, the founder and president of the Center for China and Globalization, agrees the trade war "certainly is a big deal" for China, calling the situation "unprecedented". "China and the US relations this year is exactly 40 years of diplomatic ties," he says. "China ... largely opened up to the US and actually, for the last four decades, there's bumps, there's up and downs, but not as big a surprise as I expect at this one." Wang claims that the tariffs have not affected business in China so much as possibly undermined confidence. "I don't think there is a lot of economic impact. There could be some psychological impact, people just perhaps withholding from further heavy investing or maybe rolling back a bit of the employment on that. But basically, I think both China and the US are looking towards stability and towards a deal that can be mutually beneficial." Meanwhile, Wang agrees that the effects of the trade war could reach beyond either countries' shores. "The thing about the China-US trade war is that it dampens confidence, it actually makes people reluctant to invest and also ... the value chain is hitted on that. Because China is in the epicentre of the global value chain. You know, a lot of things go through China," he says. "So, if China is really hitted by this trade war, all the other suppliers from other regions, from other countries, will all [be] affected ... So, in return that will have [an] effect on the US, as well. So, I don't see how the world economy will maintain such a strong growth and then them become effective." He says coming to an agreement with the US is critical, noting that recent negotiations have been a step in the right direction. "This partial deal that President Trump and China strike in the last month is absolutely crucial. Because if we do not do that, I mean the two biggest economic powers in the world and then, if they really fight ... all the others will suffer, absolutely. And then, we may drag the world into a recession. And that's quite possible, too, and we may have another financial crisis. Because this is really [an] alarming situation." - Subscribe to our channel: 🤍 - Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 - Find us on Facebook: 🤍 - Check our website: 🤍

27.10.2022

On Thursday afternoon, October 27, CCG hosted an online book launch and invite the book’s author, publisher, think tank experts and former dignitaries to discuss the new book "The Ebb and Flow of Globalization". Globalization is an unstoppable force. Given the high stakes at hand – stability, continued growth, and the future of our planet – it is more important than ever that China gain a deeper understanding of the rest of the world, and that the rest of the world also comes to gain a clearer understanding of China. Dr. Henry Huiyao Wang’s latest work, The Ebb and Flow of Globalization, was recently published by Springer Nature. The book features a selection of his writings published between 2016 and 2021 by domestic and overseas media and institutions including Beijing Review, Bloomberg, China Daily, CGTN, The Financial Times, Global Times, The Indian Express, Munich Security Conference, South China Morning Post, the Wilson Center, and the World Economic Forum. By any measure, these five years mark a pivotal period for China and global affairs, which saw major changes in geopolitics, economic cooperation, and global governance in which there was both progress and setbacks, which Dr. Wang has termed the “ebb and flow of globalization.” This book focuses on globalization and China’s evolving role in the world. The essays center on three interconnected themes – China’s remarkable development under its policy of Reform and Opening-up, China’s deepening integration into the global economy and rise in an increasingly multipolar world, and the quest to reinvigorate global governance and multilateralism to address the pressing global challenges of the 21st century. It is one of the few works in English that looks at China and the development of globalization from the perspective of a Chinese scholar.

China has said its application to join Asia-Pacific’s biggest free trade pact is unrelated to the recently formed alliance between Australia, Britain and the United States. China's application for the CPTPP comes at a tricky time, given its trade tensions with Australia - a current member. All 11 members of the partnership will need to reach a consensus to allow Beijing to join. Dr Wang Huiyao, Founder and President of the Center for China and Globalization, shared his views on this. CCG President Dr. Wang Huiyao had a dialogue with Teshome Toga Chanaka, Ambassador of Ethiopia to China, sharing the insights on China-Ethiopian relations and the current situation in Ethiopia. They agreed that China and Africa are natural partners. The cooperation with China has played a unique role in promoting much needed basic infrastructures in Ethiopia, pushing forward a sound industrialization and pulling millions out of poverty. The beauty of the partnership between China and Africa is it allows countries to choose the path of development that suits ourselves the best. The “debt trap” concept is groundless and just not helpful for Ethiopia and Africa in general. To watch more videos, please subscribe to our YouTube channel and follow us in the following platforms: 官网 (中文):🤍 Official Website (English):🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍CCG_org LinkedIn: 🤍

While much of 2021 saw the tensions between the United States and China, the world’s two largest economies, mounting to new heights, the bilateral relations nevertheless rebounded in December as the two sides pledged to boost climate cooperation in a joint declaration in Glasgow, following a virtual summit between President Xi and President Biden. As 2021 is drawing to a close, amid worries about the unknown Omicron variant of coronavirus and rising inflation globally, what does the future hold for the world economy? How will the US and China respond to uncertainties in economic outlook and what are the implications? The Center for China and Globalization (CCG) invited Prof. Stephen S. Roach, Senior Fellow at the Yale University and former Chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, to join a dialogue with CCG President Wang Huiyao to address the issues above.

This program on June 20, 2022, as part of CCG 8th China and Globalization Forum, featured Prof. Niall Ferguson, Senior Fellow at Hoover Institute, Stanford University and one of the most brilliant historians of our age, to share his insights on the key issues of the day. There is an urgent need to find ways to end the Ukrainian conflict before Ukraine is permanently and seriously damaged as an economy. The US strategy is to see Ukraine as a proxy and to deter China from taking military action over Taiwan. The strategy is dangerous, and both US and China should see détente and avoid risks of triggering World War Three. - 欢迎订阅我们的频道,并关注我们其他线上平台 To watch more videos, please subscribe to our YouTube channel and follow us in the following platforms: 官网 (中文):🤍 Official Website (English):🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍CCG_org LinkedIn: 🤍

With 2022 marching into Q4, the world is set out to witness a series of significant events – China’s 20th Communist Party Congress, mid-term elections in the United States, the G20 Summit in Indonesia, and the APEC Summit in Thailand. While Beijing and Washington DC are busy battling a slowing economy and a looming economic recession, the war in Ukraine continues to push inflation and prices to new highs. The covid-19 pandemic has already hit many emerging markets hard, having driven more than 60 percent of low-income countries into debt and over 100 million people into extreme poverty. Global economic leadership, today more than ever, is needed yet hampered by a global geopolitical landscape that is increasingly fragmented. Moving forward, how will the global economy overcome challenges ranging from inflation, supply chain disruption, to energy shortages against the backdrop of the global push towards climate action? How will the United States and China, the world’s largest two economies manage their strategic competition that is increasingly intensifying? In the quest for global economic leadership, how will the world balance the twin threats stemming from the so-called Thucydides trap and the Kindleberger trap? This program featured a conversation between C Fred Bergsten, founder of one of America’s finest think tank, the Peterson Institute of International Economics (PIIE) and author of The United States vs. China: The Quest for Global Economic Leadership, and WANG Huiyao, founder and president of Center for China and Globalization, who has hosted more than 40 episodes of CCG Global Dialogue series, including more recent ones featuring Hank Paulson and Larry Summers.
