For its 25th anniversary, the Fantasia International Film Festival honoured writer, director and video artist Shunji Iwai with a Career Achievement Award. His latest film, THE 12 DAY TALE OF THE MONSTER THAT DIED IN 8 – designed as a relief film for the Japanese film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic – perfectly captures the all-too-online moment in which we find ourselves. This is, however, only the latest example of Iwai’s preternatural talent for capturing and sublimating specific periods in life and culture: the unspoken feelings that accompany pivotal moments such as the end of elementary school (FIREWORKS, SHOULD WE SEE IT FROM THE OR THE BOTTOM?), moves to university (APRIL STORY), the uncertainty of marriage and adult life (A BRIDE FOR RIP VAN WINKLE), but also turn-of-the-millennium teen angst (ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU), and what it means to live in increasingly interconnected times, via message boards, dating apps, or simple letters sent from lover to lover, across eons of feeling and time (LOVE LETTER, LAST LETTER). During this year's Tokyo International Film Festival, Hyesoo interviewed famous Japanese film director, Shunji Iwai, who is also a video artist, writer, and documentary maker. He directed "Love Letter" and now recently came with a new anime movie called the "Case of Hana and Alice." Shunji Iwai is a fascinating director. His work explores humanity, the wonderful good, the terrifying bad and everything in between, through a series of stunningly captured moments - moments that Iwai allows to breathe in leisurely extended scenes. In this video I explore his filmography through those moments, and dive into one of his most underappreciated gems: the animated masterpiece that is The Case of Hana & Alice. Their lives seem reasonably happy until she has her braces removed, and Yukio finds kissing her less satisfying. She soon starts tying up everything in her sight with knotted twine, starting with the turtles. A psychiatrist diagnoses “Obsessive Knot-Binding Syndrome” due to deficiencies in her relationship with Yukio. Moemi continues to expand her activities, tying herself in knots with cords stretching across the apartment. The doctor tells Yukio that her illness has reached a critical point, and that he should tie her up that evening. This he proceeds to do, with her encouraging him to bind her more and more. Where will this end?
Following the death of her older sister, Yuri goes to her sister's high school reunion to bring the news to her classmates. However, she is mistaken as her sister Misaski and decides to just go with the flow. There, she meets Kyoshiro, a senior she had a crush on back in high school. But he was in love with Misaki, and is in love with her still. After the reunion, the two begin exchanging letters, with Yuri continuing to impersonate Misaki. Directed by Shunji Iwai.
