This new positive psychology from Authentic Happiness can be used in anybody’s life to generate and creative positive and blissful emotions. Hedonistic happiness can be found all over the world, with people finding quick means to an end, but lasting happiness must be created by finding your purpose. This goes the other way too, trying to make someone happy can be very difficult unless you can make them feel they have a certain purpose. Dr Martin Seligman is well-known for his work on positive psychology, At the start of this rousing keynote Seligman suggests that had he encouraged psychologists and politicians to focus on wellbeing 30 years ago, most would have walked out of the lecture theatre. Happiness and wellbeing aren’t the absence of misery, Seligman said. As a therapist he encountered many previously-depressed patients whose depression measures ended up at zero post-treatment, but rather than being happy these people seemed empty to him. Building positive emotion, engagement and meaning are completely different from getting rid of sadness and anxiety – they stand in the way but don’t alleviate.
