Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia’s first military mobilisation since World War Two. He also warned he would use "all means [he has]" to defend Russian territory, raising concerns around the world and saying it wasn’t a bluff. With the United Nations General Assembly taking place this week, Nato leaders attacked Putin’s announcement. But Nato-Russia relations weren’t always quite so frosty. In this episode we speak to Lord Robertson, the tenth Secretary General of that alliance, who met Putin 9 times and says that Putin even discussed joining Nato at one point in their conversations. Ukraine announced the release of 215 imprisoned soldiers and 10 foreigners from Russia on Thursday. The soliders were released in exchange for 55 Russian prisoners, as well as Victor Medvedchuck, leader of the banned pro-Russia political party in Ukraine. Among the released were fighters who led the defense of Mariupol's Azovstal's steelworks, an act that has been hailed as an icon of Ukrainian resistance. "We have managed to liberate 215 people," the Ukraine presidency's chief of staff Andriy Yermak announced on television. He went on to say that commanders of the Azov battalion were included in those released. The Azov regiment is a unit of the National Guard of Ukraine. It gained attention fighting pro-Russian separatists in the Donbas region since 2014. Victor Medvedchuck, said to be Putin's right hand man in Ukraine, is a Ukrainian politician who has been charged for alleged treason for his involvement with Russia. He was captured by Ukrainian forces in April. Yermak went on to thank Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Twitter, saying that the Azov commanders were already safe in Turkey thanks to "personal arrangements" between Zelenskyy and Erdogan. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his government also played an role in brokering the prisoners exchange. Among the foreigners released were five British nationals, two US military veterans and further prisoners from Morocco, Sweden and Croatia. They were flown to Saudi Arabia after being freed, the Saudi ministry said in a statement. "The relevant Saudi authorities received and transferred them from Russia to the kingdom and are facilitating procedures for their respective countries," the statement said. The White House thanked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for brokering the exchange in which two Americans were freed. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement on Twitter that the White House thanked the Ukrainian government "for including two US citizens in the prisoner exchange announced today." British Prime Minister Liz Truss celebrated the news on social media, too. "Hugely welcome news that five British nationals held by Russian-backed proxies in eastern Ukraine are being safely returned, ending months of uncertainty and suffering for them and their families,'' she tweeted. US President Joe Biden has told the UN general assembly that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a shameless violation of the core tenets of the UN charter. Mr Biden urged the world to see Russia's "outrageous acts for what they are" and said no-one sought conflict apart from Moscow. His words came just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military reservists are to be sent to Ukraine as part of a partial mobilisation of Russian forces. President Putin accused the West of "nuclear blackmail" and said a threat to retaliate was "not a bluff". Please subscribe HERE 🤍 #US #Russia #BBCNews

Russia and Ukraine carried out an unexpected prisoner swap on Wednesday, the largest since the war began and involving almost 300 people, including 10 foreigners and the Azov commanders who led a prolonged Ukrainian defence of Mariupol earlier this year. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that pro-Kremlin Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, who is President Vladimir Putin's closest and most influential ally in Ukraine, had been freed as part of a deal that released 200 Ukrainian soldiers. In addition, Russia’s defence ministry said on Thursday that 55 of its servicemen had been returned to Russia. Russian men rushed for the exits on Thursday after President Vladimir Putin ordered a partial mobilisation, with traffic at border crossings with Finland and Georgia surging and prices for air tickets from Moscow rocketing. Traffic at the Russia-Georgia border intensified overnight, said Ivan, a Russian driver who managed to get to Georgia. “Yesterday before midnight you could cross the border much more quickly. After midnight, either lots of cars arrived or the border guards started to work more slowly," Ivan told Reuters news service from behind the wheel of his car. He added that he and his acquaintances don't fit the age criteria for the current wave of mobilization “at the moment,” but that “We don't know what will happen next.” Long queues of cars were also reported on Russian borders with Kazakhstan and Mongolia, while Russian passengers could be found in Turkish airports. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a conference call on Thursday that reports of exodus of fighting-age men from Russia were “exaggerated”. On Wednesday, Putin ordered Russia's first mobilization since World War II and backed a plan to annex swathes of Ukraine, warning the West he was not bluffing when he said he'd be ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia. Russian families' tearful goodbyes as Putin mobilises reservists to Ukraine

Breaking news - Despite widespread Russian protests against Putin's partial mobilisation order, the first reservists gathered in various cities across Russia on Thursday as the wartime order to bolster troops fighting in Ukraine got underway. Hundreds of men said goodbye to their tearful families, uncertain whether they'll see their loved ones again. A draftee's father was surprised to discover his young son had been called up because he's a student. "The president's decree said no students would be recruited. And then it happened, they recruited him without any explanation. This is not right." He said, as his son was about to board the bus with hundreds of other conscripts in their region. "The enlistment officer said he would talk to me afterwards." He added: "But after they've gone." Putin ordered the partial mobilisation Wednesday to fight in Ukraine, a deeply unpopular move that sparked protests across the country and led to almost 1,200 arrests. Some protesters detained at the anti-war rallies were threatened with deployment to the frontlines and reports that men with no military experience were being called up, despite the Kremlin's assurances that wouldn't happen. Stories emerged from one remote region of university students being pulled straight out of class. The move also sent some Russians scrambling to buy plane tickets and drive to bordering countries. Traffic at frontier crossings with Finland and Georgia surged and prices for air tickets from Moscow rocketed. Vladimir Putin has secretly approved a law that could send a further one million men to fight in Ukraine, according to information leaked from the Kremlin. Russian-installed authorities in occupied parts of Ukraine have been holding so-called referendums on joining Russia. Polling has begun despite worldwide condemnation and a warning from the UN chief - that the results will not be recognised. Ballots are being collected in the regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk - an area making up about 15 percent of the Ukrainian territory. As voting continues, Kyiv say it has recaptured more ground in its continuing counter-offensive. The voting is expected to last several days and result in the regions' annexation by Moscow. Ukraine and Western governments say they won't recognize the outcome. We talk about Russia's latest moves with Petro Poroshenko. He was president of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019.
