In which John Green teaches you about the European Renaissance. European learning changed the world in the 15th and 16th centuries, but was it a cultural revolution, or an evolution? We'd argue that any cultural shift that occurs over a couple of hundred years isn't too overwhelming to the people who live through it. In retrospect though, the cultural bloom in Europe during this time was pretty impressive. In addition to investigating what caused the Renaissance and who benefitted from the changes that occurred, John will tell you just how the Ninja Turtles got mixed up in all this. Beginning at the end of the 14th Century, the Renaissance created a new type of man, triggering economic, scientific, technical, religious, social and cultural developments that are unique in history. Never before have culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within one century as during the Renaissance. But what was the catalyst for it, what is the "Renaissance factor"? The Renaissance is an epoch unique in human history: Never before have art, culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within a single century. We search for the "Renaissance factor", that combination of influences that triggered a pivotal period in history. It is a journey through time from Ancient Rome to the Crusades and the Black Death in the 14th century, events that defined the developments of the Renaissance. We travel with Michelangelo to the major construction site that was to become St. Peter’s Basilica, to the banking houses of the Medicis and the workshop of Johannes Gutenberg. We examine some of the many innovations of the Renaissance such as linear perspective, the printing press and double-entry bookkeeping. We ask what these achievements mean to us today and how - almost half a millennium later - we continue to benefit from the "Renaissance factor." And we delve deeper with the help of spectacular reenactments and our "special investigators" - modern-day trendsetters, scientists, business tycoons, fashion designers and artists. Psychiatrist Carl Jung is noted for saying: "What you resist, persists." We all have the power of choice in life. We can resist what we don't like in the hope that it will go away. Or we can accept things the way they are and make space for something new and different to transpire, simply by being in the flow of who we are and what is happening around us. And when we surrender to what is, we allow the true beauty of life to unfold. This magical space is where joy lives, and where gratitude can be found. Life is precious when we align with the magic in surrender. Filmed at Groot Marico, South Africa. 'Postmen: roots and culture!'

Florence and the Renaissance: Crash Course European History #2

The Renaissance was a cultural revitalization that spread across Europe, and had repercussions across the globe, but one smallish city-state in Italy was in many ways the epicenter of the thing. Florence, or as Italians might say, Firenze, was the home to a seemingly inordinate amount of the art, architecture, literature, and cultural output of the Renaissance. Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo daVinci, Sandro Boticelli, and many others were associated with the city, and the money of patrons like the Medici family made a lot of the art possible. Today you'll learn about how the Renaissance came to be, and what impact it had on Europe and the world. Our Sources: Hunt, Lynn et al. The Making of the West: Peoples and Cultures, 6th ed. Renaissance are an English progressive rock band, best known for their 1978 UK top 10 hit "Northern Lights" and progressive rock classics like "Carpet of the Sun", "Mother Russia", and "Ashes Are Burning". They developed a unique sound, combining a female lead vocal with a fusion of classical, folk, rock, and jazz influences. Characteristic elements of the Renaissance sound are Annie Haslam's wide vocal range, prominent piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements, vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, synthesiser, and versatile drum work. The band created a significant following in the northeast United States in the 1970s, and that region remains their strongest fan base. The original line-up included two former members of The Yardbirds, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, along with John Hawken, Louis Cennamo and Relf's sister Jane Relf. They intended to put "something together with more of a classical influence". Renaissance was born, and the band released a studio album in 1969, and another in 1971. Subsequently, John Tout replaced Hawken on keyboards, followed by a period of high turnover of musicians until the "classic line-up" of Haslam, John Tout, Michael Dunford, Jon Camp, and Terry Sullivan was established, although none of them were in the original band. They were assisted with lyrics on many songs from Cornish poet Betty Thatcher-Newsinger. From 1972 to 1979 Renaissance released seven successful studio albums, toured extensively, and sold out three nights in a row at Carnegie Hall with Tony Cox conducting the New York Philharmonic.

Many of us spend our lives twisting ourselves into shapes that are unnatural and uncomfortable in the hopes of gaining acceptance from others. We do this in an effort to live up to their expectations, or avoid conflict. And in doing this, we fail to recognise what we deeply desire for ourselves and what is true within our own heart. If you're trying so hard to fit in, you're missing out on all the benefits of stepping out and really being you - that person that comes out when no one's looking, when your guard is down - that's you. And the good news is, we're all waiting for you to do it. Even though we won't say it out loud, we really want to know what the real you looks like, sounds like, acts like. We want you to do it so we can see just how easy it is for us to do it too. Let it shine! Filmed in Barrydale, South Africa. Over four episodes, Waldemar Januszczak re-evaluates the view of art in the Renaissance. The art critic challenges the traditional opinion of the period by introducing new concepts and artwork. Januszczak begins by rebuffing the idea that Renaissance art originated in Italy and goes on to discuss the work of artists in the lands of Flanders and Germany, such as Van Eyck, Memling, Durer, Riemenschneider and Cranach. The work of renowned Renaissance artists is also explored from a different stance, discussing pieces by Michelangelo, da Vinci and Botticelli. 00:00:00 Episode 1: God, Myths and Oil Paints 00:59:51 Episode 2: Whips, Deaths and Madonnas 01:59:05 Episode 3: Silk, Sex and Sin 02:58:40 Episode 4: Hell, Snakes and Giants Subscribe and click the bell icon to get more arts content every week: youtube.com/c/PerspectiveArts Perspective is YouTube's home for the arts.
