There was plenty to fear in the Lutheran faith of Bach’s day. Life on earth was a cesspit of afflictions – one long string of laments, complaints, worries and moans. At the end, a heavenly reward awaited you, if you were lucky. But how could you be sure you would receive it? This question instilled great fear in the congregations of Bach’s time. Believers faced the challenge of retaining hope throughout those fears. In this dialogue cantata - 'O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort' performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society directed by Shunske Sato - Fear and Hope literally battle it out. Both emotions are represented by a voice: Fear by an alto (a boy’s voice in Bach’s day) and Hope by a tenor. Recorded for the project All of Bach on August 26th 2021 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. Bach’s Kunst der Fuge is shrouded in mystery. We don’t know whether Bach intended the music as material for practice or performance. The order of the 18 sections is unclear as well and we don’t know whether the piece was ever completed. Shunske Sato made his own instrumentation for the Netherlands Bach Society. “I wanted to bring out the many colours of the work and of my ensemble. Every fugue has its own character. On the basis of the rhythm, time and chromatic lines, etc., you can determine which instrument is most suitable. I’ve studied each part very carefully, in order to decide which instruments are best to use. I wanted the whole Netherlands Bach Society to be heard, so the singers are taking part as well. They sing without words, to vowel sounds. When you introduce singers to the Art of Fugue, you can hardly ignore the example of the Swingle Singers. The sung Contrapunctus 9 is intended as a tribute to their great recording." When it was composed, this violin marvel – the Violin Concerto in D minor, performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach – immediately became such a technical challenge that few soloists were able to tackle it. Too few, probably, as not a shred of it has survived. The concerto played here is a modern reconstruction, based on a harpsichord concerto written much later by Bach, but which is presumed to originate from a violin concerto. Bach made ingenious use of compositions he had written earlier, blending them with new additions to form a perfect unity. Around a quarter of cantata 'Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, consists of notes Bach had written earlier and likewise, the opening chorus 'Wir dank dir, Gott' is better known from the later Mass in B minor. The Italian influence could be heard immediately in Bach’s music during his time in Weimar. In the opening chorus of this cantata, 'Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society conducted by Shunske Sato, you can hear clear echoes of one of Vivaldi’s concertos. An early version of the cantata probably originated in 1713, written for the funeral of the wife of a high court official, on 8 October. The theme of the sermon for this service was psalm 94, verse 19, which is precisely the text of the opening chorus of Bach’s cantata. This early version consisted only of parts 2–6 and 9. In March 1714, Bach was told that he must “monatlich neüe Stücke ufführen” for the court chapel. And so the church cantatas for Weimar were born. On 17 June, the third Sunday after Trinity, the longer version of this cantata was performed there. Recorded for the project All of Bach on 22 April 2021 at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht. Bach arranged various Vivaldi concertos for organ and harpsichord. The Concerto in A minor, performed by Siebe Henstra, Menno van Delft, Pieter-Jan Belder and Tineke Steenbrink for All of Bach, is largely based on Vivaldi's Concerto in B minor for four violins and orchestra. But of course, he gave it an exciting twist, as in Bach’s version the soloists play harpsichords and B minor changed to A minor. The cantata 'Schleicht, spielende Wellen, und murmelt gelinde', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is a birthday tribute to the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Although Friedrich August lived in Dresden, it was customary to celebrate his birthday and other special court occasions in Leipzig as well. Bach was already working on this cantata in 1734, when Friedrich August had just been crowned King of Poland. When the regent announced at the eleventh hour that he was coming in person to Leipzig to celebrate his birthday, Bach gave preference to another work. Maybe Schleicht, spielende Wellen was not yet completely finished. In the end, the piece was performed in 1736, in Café Zimmermann. A later performance (1740), at the Zimmerman Garden, has also been documented. For that reason the Netherlands Bach Society also performed this cantata in the open air. The Magnificat, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is the first large choral work that Bach composed after his appointment in Leipzig in the spring of 1723. The St Matthew Passion performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. Whether or not they are an enthusiast of classical music, practically everyone in the Netherlands knows the St Matthew Passion. Since 1870 the Netherlands has had a rich tradition of annual St Matthew Passion performances. The Netherlands Bach Society was formed in 1921, in reaction to the popular performances by Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. In cantata 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, everything revolves around the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. They wait throughout the night with burning lamps for the arrival of the bridegroom. Five of them have brought along extra oil to keep their lamp burning. The others run out of oil and go off to buy some more. The bridegroom arrives while they are away. Recorded for the project All of Bach on February 11th 2018 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam.

Bach wrote 'Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, as an 'audition piece'. He was applying for the position of cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and part of this application procedure was to perform two self-composed cantatas. It is disputed if, while composing, Bach tried to please his Leipzig audience or if he composed in his usual style and manner. Ambiguity and doubt resound in the opening of Bach’s cantata 'Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. The same applies to the subsequent recitative by the tenor and particularly the aria, with its indecisive rhythms and uncertain harmonies. But then the alto gives heart to the doubter: God will stand by his side in the battle, so that faith will win in the end. And just where you expect a simple chorale at the end of the cantata, suddenly you hear a grand arrangement with rousing orchestral accompaniment. It is one of the oldest Lutheran hymns, with words that testify to an unshakeable faith in God. Recorded for the project All of Bach on 28 May 2021 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. In the first notes of the Concerto in D minor, performed by Leo van Doeselaar for All of Bach, it is immediately clear that this is not the usual Bach. This piece is an organ version of a concerto for two violins and orchestra from Antonio Vivaldi’s L’Estro Armonico. Vivaldi’s music was popular throughout Europe and Germany was no exception. During his years at the court in Weimar, Bach made a series of arrangements of Italian concerto music for organ and harpsichord, including six concertos by Vivaldi. The only parts that Bach definitely wrote especially for 'Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, are the recitatives and the final chorale of the piece. Although the opening aria and the ensuing chorus for a large group of musicians to the words ‘Rejoice, you joyful voices’ correspond closely to the text, Bach initially did not compose them for these words. The latter and other remaining parts were borrowed from his earlier pieces. Recorded for the project All of Bach on March 15th 2014 at St Martin's Church, Groningen. Until recently, it was thought that this Whitsun cantata 'O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, was one of the last cantatas in Bach’s oeuvre. The manuscript of the score, largely in Bach’s own handwriting, dates from a few years before his death. However, a libretto discovered recently in St Petersburg shows that the cantata is much older and was performed for the first time on 1 June 1727. The work was presented in Leipzig on Whit Sunday, at the Nikolaikirche during the morning service and at the Thomaskirche during vespers. Even then, the work was not totally new. The chorus sections and the alto aria, the most essential parts, reuse material originating from a wedding cantata of the same name but much more extensive (BWV 34a), which Bach had composed at an earlier stage. The Netherlands Bach Society performs 'Kommt, eilet und laufet' for All of Bach. This Oster-Oratorium (Easter oratorio) was first performed on Easter Sunday in 1725. Two days earlier, the congregation in Leipzig had listened to the St John Passion, just as in 1724. The closing chorus ‘Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine’ sent them on their way home to celebrate Holy Saturday. And then, on Sunday morning, the church resounded with the huge contrast of a Sinfonia with leading roles for three trumpets and timpani. Before the singers get going, Bach seems to recall Jesus’s death with a melancholy Adagio in B minor for solo traverso and strings. 'Auf, schmetternde Töne', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, was played in Leipzig in 1735 to celebrate the name day of Friedrich August II, Elector of Saxony. Although his court was in Dresden, important occasions were also celebrated in Leipzig with ‘extraordinary’ concerts. The libretto of this cantata is a typically eighteenth-century – and for modern ears rather exalted – ode to the virtues of the Elector and the ensuing prosperity of his subjects. 'Clavier' in Bach's time can refer to various keyboard instruments. A harpsichord, clavichord, virginal or a fortepiano: Bach was familiar with all these instruments. But what exactly are the characteristics of these instruments and how do they differ from each other? In this special video, Siebe Henstra and Leo van Doeselaar show a range of various keyboard instruments from Bach's time - and later periods. Bach often used the term 'Clavier' in his compositions for keyboard instruments, but he usually did not specify what type of instrument he had in mind. The question of which instrument a particular work should be played on was probably also considered less important in his day than it is now. The cantata 'Ich geh und suche mit Verlangen', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society directed by Shunske Sato, is one of several dialogue cantatas written by Bach. As in the case of the other dialogues, the lyrics Bach used were already suited to the form beforehand. Bach underlines the form musically: a characteristic element in nearly all his dialogue cantatas is the choice of soprano and bass as the only soloists. The underlying idea is always the same. The soul (soprano) and Christ (bass) converse together and eventually declare their love for one another. Recorded for the project All of Bach on August 26th 2021 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. Sometimes – viewed from our current performance perspective – Bach gets in his own way a bit: unclear genres and unusual instruments make his work interesting, but also difficult to place at times. A good example of this is O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht. As a consequence of this BWV 118 is performed relatively infrequently, for which there is no musical reason whatsoever. It is a wonderful chorale arrangement, like the ones we are familiar with from the cantatas. Recorded for the project All of Bach on 27 May 2021 at the Walloon Church in Amsterdam. The cantata 'Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is not just about slight misfortune, but deep misery. The piece comes from the very beginning of Bach’s career, during his time as organist in Mühlhausen. He was then in his early twenties and trying his hand at vocal church music for the first time. He did so properly, according to the book, and in stylistic line with his fellow seventeenth-century musicians. Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 16th 2015 at the Oostkerk, Middelburg. For the complete cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben' BWV 147 go to: 🤍 Bach’s famous chorale 'Jesus bleibet meine Freude', from cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben', was first heard when the cantata was performed in Leipzig, on 2 July 1723, for the Feast of the Visitation. It was during Bach’s first months as cantor and he reused music that he had to hand, as he often did. Bach had already written most of BWV 147 in 1716, as an advent cantata for the court chapel in Weimar, but it was only in Leipzig that he added the recitatives with instrumental accompaniment and the well-known chorale. So Bach turned a concise cantata (opening chorus, four arias and probably a simple closing chorale) into a big two-part cantata. Dire warnings in the cantata text of 'Sie werden euch in den Bann tun', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach: Jesus is trying to explain to his disciples that their lives will not always be easy. Bach supports these warnings with a strict canon; a composition method whereby the different voices follow one another very precisely. It is only in the last aria and final chorus that the way is cleared for faith. Recorded for the project All of Bach on February 10th 2018 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. The Violin Concerto in E major, performed by Shunske Sato and the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is difficult to date. As so often, we are missing any sources written by Bach himself. Like the Brandenburg concertos, it probably originates from Köthen, but it could also date from Leipzig, where from 1730 Bach led the local Collegium Musicum. Whatever the case may be, we can assume that the scanty couple of surviving violin concertos are merely the tip of the iceberg, and that numerous other orchestral works have been lost or still await discovery.
