How To Get 6 Modulation Effects From a Basic Flanger Pedal Like The Boss BF-2

How to get the most from your flanger pedal. A basic analogue flanger pedal like the Boss BF-2 or the MXR M117 is actually the most versatile type of modulation effect there is. MXR M117r USA: 🤍 UK: 🤍 Boss BF-3 (updated digital version of BF-2) USA: 🤍 UK: 🤍 TC Electronic Thunderstorm Flanger USA: 🤍 UK: 🤍 I got a lot of inspiration for this video from this excellent article 🤍 With a deeper understanding of the controls you can get chorus, phaser, rotary speaker, uni-vibe, vibrato and even auto-wah type sounds all out of one simple analogue pedal. Now I know there are digital multi effects that can do lots of different modulation sounds all from one pedal but there is real joy in taking a simple old school analogue flanger pedal and exploring how creative and resourceful you can actually be with just that one effect. The flanger sound comes from when in a studio, two tape machines were playing the same music and someone press' their finger on the flange of one of those tape machines to manually slow it down, the harder they press, the more it slows down and the more it would drop in pitch, when they released their finger that tape machine would speed back up and the pitch would raise and that’s what creates the traditional flanger sound. Manual is delay time, longer to the left and shorter to the right. This is basically how in or out of sync the two tape machines would be. Depth or width is how wide the sweep is. That’s how hard the finger would be pressed on the flange of one of the tape machines. Rate is the speed of the modulation so that’s how fast or how often the finger would be pressing on the flange of one of the tape machines. The resonance, feedback or regeneration control feeds the delayed signal back to the input, which intensifies the flanging effect as it's turned up. For the standard Flanger swoosh; all controls at about noon except maybe the resonance which you can crank up a bit. For chorus sounds set the resonance very low to reduce the intense flange sound. Set manual (this is the delay time) very low, because chorus usually has a longer delay time than flangers, we want it set long to get away from the comb filter sound that a shorter delay gives, the longer delay sounds more like two signals overlaid onto of each other which is what we want for chorus. Depth set fairly low, flangers can get really wide and extreme in how much they alter the pitch, we want a fairly subtle smooth sweep for a more traditional chorus sound. Rate can be set to taste. For a rotary speaker type sound you can use mostly the same settings that we used for chorus but increase the depth for a wider sweep. Now if you raise the manual control to shorten the delay time it gets into more of a phasing type sound which is similar to a uni-vibe. It doesn’t quite have the full throb of a real uni vibe but it will get you close. If you crank both the depth and rate controls you can get a pretty good vibrato pedal type sound, I like using this setting to highlight certain notes and only have it on momentarily. Now if you raise the manual control so there’s only a very short delay time it creates more of a phasing sound because the the original signal is so close to the sound of the modulated signal. It just sounds very similar to phasing with a more shimmery thinner sound that a phaser has. You can move away from the phasing sound and more towards an auto wah sound by backing off the manual and depth controls and then raising the resonance control and you get more of a fluctuation in tone instead of pitch. The more you raise that resonance control the more it will start to blend with the more traditional flanging sounds. Remember it doesn’t have to be the Boss BF-2 that you use to get these sounds. Any decent flanger pedal with those four main controls will do. Has Dan Found His Ultimate Flanger Pedal? – That Pedal Show

We demo a selection of flanger effects pedals for electric guitar including the Thorpy Camoflange, Dreadbox Komo Rebi, Retro-Sonic Flanger and a vintage Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress. So, um, yes he has! In this episode we pick up from where we left off well over a year ago in ‘Dan Wants A New Flanger’, which you can watch here: 🤍 Like a fine wine or maybe one of those truly gopping mouldy cheeses, the question of Dan's flanger has needed time to ferment and mature into a well rounded answer… not least while Thorpy was developing the new Camoflange with the help of British guitar effects guru, Dan Coggins. Which means there are no prizes whatsoever for guessing what Dan’s new favourite flanger is. He’s really quite ripe about it. Let’s flange and… Enjoy the episode! How FLANGER, CHORUS & PHASER process your sound - Sound Design Theory

They create very distinctive sounds, but it is not always clear what it does exactly to the sound. Today I'd like to dive a little bit in that and show how these common but mysterious effects are actually very close to a delay effect. Guitar Modulation Effects In A Band Jam [Phaser, Flanger, Vibe, Tremolo & Vibrato]

We play popular modulation effects in a simple band mix Life too short for long YouTube videos? ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ info below. In this video Dan and I play some of our favourite modulation effects in the context of a simple guitar, bass and drums mix. We’ve covered all of these effects in previous videos, but here we offer some inspiration and ideas for your own playing. The specific genres and playing styles won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but we hope you can extrapolate into situations that suit your own approach. Enjoy the show! Massive thanks to Dougie Mussard for being such a wonderful human and even better drummer. What happens in Mick’s second jam where he goes to wet/dry with the OD and fuzz? Okay, so the wet/dry effect is almost totally overshadowed here by the fact the fuzz and the D&M swap order. With the fuzz straight after the guitar, it’s seeing the relatively high impedance of the pickups and volume control. When I hit the wet/dry switch, we’d forgotten that Dan had re-ordered the board for his flanger demo… ergo the D&M comes before the fuzz, meaning the fuzz is now seeing the relatively low impedance of the D&M Drive’s output. Confusing, but it does illustrate why you usually want the fuzz straight after your guitar! How did we record the band? Drums are mic’d Glyn Johns style (Neumann TLM102 as overheads), plus an extra snare mic (Beyer M201) underneath. Bass is DI’d via an Ampeg SVT DI (bass rig below); guitar cabs are mic’d with Austrian Audio OC18 into Meris 440 Preamps, plus our stereo room mics (AKGC414XL). There’s plenty of spill all around the mics in the room. Everything hits our UA Apollo interfaces for recording and I mixed it (Mick here) using Universal Audio Luna. A New Flanger That Stands Up To The EHX Electric Mistress? That Pedal Show

Welcome to That Pedal Show! Please subscribe to our channel and visit our store 🤍 Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. In this video Dan is taking a stroll down flanger boulevard. He has two favourite pedals in the world: one is his original Boss CE-1 Chorus; the other is his 1977 Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress. But the ol’ girl is getting too precious and delicate to schlep to gigs, meaning he’s had to search for a younger model. Many a pretty pretender has come and gone but nothing has really stood up to his original Mistress in terms of sound or feel. However, just when he thought it was never going to happen, he stumbled on a pedal that he thinks does the job. He’s already started using it, but just to make sure, we thought we’d put it up against the contenders to date and get a listen. So why aren’t there more flangers in this video? According to Dan, the Electric Mistress is a very specific thing; quite different from the likes of the Boss BF-2, for example. Yes, there are myriad flangers available from almost every brand, but these are the ones he chose; these are they on which we shall verily chew. MXR Flanger

MXR FLANGER 🤍 The historic MXR Flanger has been allowing artists to create a variety of wild sounds from dynamic jet plane or cool space effects to short delay, chorus and vibrato since its creation in the mid-70's. Before this pedal hit the scene, engineers and musician's had been experimenting with "flanging" affects for years in recordings using reel to reel tape machines. This pedal gave musicians the possibility to accomplish those tones at their feet live on stage. Achieve classic vintage sounds heard on legendary recordings or experiment with the controls or combine with other pedals to come up with something entirely unique and new. Back off Width to zero to disengage auto-sweep, then use the Manual knob to physically place the effect anywhere along the frequency spectrum. For use with guitar, bass, keyboards or vocals! JHS Pedals 3 Series Flanger - Pedal Empire

Welcome to the Pedal Empire YouTube Channel! The JHS 3 Series is a great affordable option for people getting into the pedal game or on a budget - but don't let that fool you! These pedals are made to the highest quality along side the JHS standard line in Kansas City, and most importantly they sound incredible. On the surface this flanger looks simple and stripped back, but due to the huge range each control has, you can go from "Sea-sick" modulation, to a subtle chorus, to sounds that could emerge form a busy airport runway. It also features a "Tape" mode toggle allowing you to emulate those primitive flanging sounds that had come from manually slowing a tape machine. All round, if you're looking for a great sounding flanger (regardless of how much it costs), this is where you'll find it. Check out the JHS 3 Series Flanger here: 🤍 If you want to know what gear we are using:: Amp: Hamstead Artist 20+RT Combo 🤍 Cables: Best-Tronics Cables 🤍 Guitar 1: Harmony Guitars Rebe 🤍 Thanks for watching!
