Crouch End is more than just a leafy liberal suburb on London without a tube station! In this video with 🤍Joolz Guides - London History Walks - Travel Films we walk from Highgate Station to Crouch End including the parkland walk, Bob Dylan, Eurythmics, Trumpton and the usual array of weird facts. There's the sculpture of Charles Darwin (or is it?), Banners, the chewing gum painter, the Boogaloo, and my favourite bakery Dunn's. Lotus car's first showroom, Hornsey St Mary's church tower and much more. Links: Joolz Guides YouTube: 🤍 IG: 🤍 FB: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Website: 🤍

I'm finally free! I can make videos again! No, I've not been released from prison, or let go after being kidnapped — I've just finished my exams. I had the silly idea to study for a masters on top of working a full-time job. It has left me feeling like a master of very little — just very tired. But my exams are done now and I won't need to think about maths again! (Until next semester!) Whatever the case, it's a milestone. And on the subject of milestones: this channel is now a year old! (Well, the first, awful, video was posted on May 31 2022.) So here's a little video to mark the occasion and help me get back into things. I'm moving home soon, and Crouch End is one of my favorite places in walking distance. With its village town center feel, it's kind of hard to believe it sits in Zone 3, just off Parkland Walk between Alexandra Palace and Finsbury Park. It's saturated with great places to eat and drink as well as independent shops and boutiques. Cafe Beam and Sourdough Sophia are both staggeringly good and are well worth making the trip for by themselves. There's also Banner's, a local haunt that serves an eclectic range of food — Manx and Caribbean, anyone? — with a table dedicated to Bob Dylan after he ate there. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. No chapter stamps here as it's basically just two roads and would look a bit silly. This was filmed on Panasonic GH5 in May 2022.

It wraps itself around a confluence of ancient routes mainly postcoded under N8. The name initially appears in 1465 Middle English records; ‘End’ referring to its outer proximity as a backwater, whilst ‘crouche’ referred to a wooden cross used as a signal post dividing the manor boundary which sat where the clock tower does now. A one-bedroom property in this village of café culture is about 13 hundred per month. A second bedroom will take you up to about 1,500 pounds. For three bedrooms, you're looking at 2,500 grand. For the outlay, you'll enjoy pretty period properties and beautifully commanding views across the capital of the City. The schools are of a high standard and the buzzing community of creatives will provide inspiration for work and play. Pickled Pepper Books is a specialist children’s bookshop, cafe and events space established in 2012. On most weekends you can meet an author or illustrator or enjoy various theatre performances. This 1895 built municipal clock tower stands up 63 feet inside the split of the broadway. It was designed in the Italian Renaissance style with all £1200 of it commemorating local benefactor Henry Williams who was key in shaping the district. It formed a terminus for horse-drawn omnibuses and a drinking fountain, inset into its base, was heavily used by both people and horses when clean drinking water wasn't so easy to come by. 27 year old New Zealander, Reginald Uren beat 200 architects in a competition to design an assembly hall, as practical and non-flashy as they could. The prize of £150 went to him for the 1935 Hornsey Town Hall on the Broadway. The building was declared surplus to requirements in 2000 and was placed on the 'at risk' register before a large sum of money had it grade listed. The site is currently being redeveloped, mostly into 135 flats by Hong Kong based property developers. One could say, Crouch End’s biggest drawback has also cemented its charm for visitors and the 'Crouch Enders' who live here. It's never had an Underground station and has been viewed as a poor relation to the other nearby leafy districts because of it. Former Salvation Army Hall (Music Palace) has been transformed into truly dynamic arts venue ArtHouse with the objective of challenging the status quo that divides cultures and instead wants to celebrate the modern diversity that reflects our lives and communities. They seek to attract a mixed audience where class, race, gender, sexuality and religion can be celebrated and discussed without inhibition. Georgians Tennis Club is a family focused and friendly atmosphere using the best possible facilities for tennis at all levels. They run an academy with a performance programme for competitive players aged 7 – 18 years who wanna take their game to the next level and be the best they can be. When the Muswell Hill and Crouch End train stations were born around the period of 1870, they gave each of their respective areas enough clout to section themselves off as districts, independent from Hornsey. The railway line connecting the stations between Muswell Hill and Finsbury Park, ran trains successfully for 98 years. However, wear and tear took its toll on the intermediate bridges across the line and they collectively fell into a poor condition of disrepair which, in 1970, stopped this railway operation dead in its tracks. Two years later, the station buildings met with the wrecking balls and the track was pulled away along with most of the platforms. As of 1984, this disused railway space has been recycled into 2 and a half mile pedestrian and cycle route, Parkland Walk. By 1990, it was a nature reserve and then officially declared so, making it the longest one in London. If you shop in Tesco, those 10 and 15p's you use to buy bags, help to pay for this area's upkeep.

You can cycle from Enfield in the very north of London to Crouch End entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes. The route is slightly under 10km long (6 miles) and makes use of Cycleway 20 on Green Lanes, parts of the New River Path, and Haringey's new Bounds Green Low Traffic Neighbourhood. The journey takes around 35 minutes to ride, which is significantly faster than by public transport. Thirty years ago David Temple stood outside a north London supermarket handing out leaflets to encourage singers to join an amateur choir. Just over ten years later he was celebrating the first of a succession of Top 20 Billboard US Album entries as music director and joint founder of Crouch End Festival Chorus. #costofliving #london #crouchend #haringey The cost of living crisis continues to affect the day to day lives of businesses, families and communities across London. Shops on Crouch End Broadway, a vibrant, charismatic Haringey street, have seen their business impacted by increased prices of fuel, energy and food. Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the UK economy shrank by 0.3% in April after a 0.1% reduction in March. Lewis Dunns, managing director of Dunns Bakery, said: “It’s certainly been a very difficult couple of years. “Seeing as we seem to have come out of the end of the Covid crisis, we’ve now got a new crisis.” The UK economy continues to suffer from the conflict in Ukraine and the ongoing issues faced post-pandemic. It remains to be seen how the crisis will affect business on the Broadway in the future, and how costs will impact the community. Shari T and Anchorpete review "Crouch End" , a short story by Stephen King, set in the real-life North London district of Crouch End, originally published in New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos (1980), and republished in a slightly different version in King's Nightmares & Dreamscapes collection (1993). It contains distinct references to the horror fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. A television adaptation aired July 12, 2006 on TNT, as part of Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King. Members from Songworks, The Bell Tower Singers, Islington Community Choir and Stapleton Hall Singers sang their hearts out as a fundraiser for Water Aid on Sunday 18th September. As of Monday 26 September our singers have raised £2,239 for Sing for Water Water Aid appeal, £350 of which was raised in a very short space of time on the street shaking buckets, which we were thrilled with. It has been a few years since Songworks have been able to perform outside the Town Hall. It felt so wonderful and local singers and the audience appreciated having our voices heard in the Square again. If you would like to contribute, here is the link. Many thanks Denise X 🤍

Crouch End, London. "If there's one pastime to make you graceful, speedy and accurate, it's fencing." M/S of two young girls being taught fencing. Other girls stand and watch - some in school uniform, others in fencing outfits of black skirts and white jackets. They are taught by a man who speaks with a French (?) accent. L/S of the teacher and one of the girls having a duel. Closer shots of the fencers as they are taught technique. One of the girl takes off her mask and smiles at the camera. "And age is no bar", explained Prof. Tassart Parkins - in fact you can probably "foil" old age by its aid." Another shot of two girls fencing. M/S of several girls fencing framed by a "health wheel" which another girl poses with. Shot in a garden or park. There is a handwritten note in the original paperwork which reads: Tassart Parkins Fencing School, 11 George Street, Portman Square, W1. Welbeck 8683. FILM ID:1584.11 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ.
